Toll roads, owned by Private Companies in agreement with the Government, ie pay $5b to toll this road for 50 years and be responsible for it's maintenance.

Excellent free market wizardry or shitty communist dictatorship?

    What say you, /pol/?

Good instant money maker for the Government provided the road is handed back at the end, tends to be shitty having to pay tolls if they toll a road on your work commute.

The Government has every right to decide however it wants to tax you, it can tax you at 100% if it likes.

    that's not what that is

    its a fucking crime.
the road was built with taxes (oil, registration) and suddenly people have to pay AGAIN to use it.
if a private company buys land and builds a road there, they can charge whatever they want, but renting it from the government and then back to the driver who already paid for it once, is just HUGE bullshit

    >Excellent free market wizardry

What in the blueberry fuckmuffins would make you think a government-induced monopoly by a private corporation over public roads the public paid to build is "free market?"

    It's double-taxation and fascism.
    >> Anonymous 03/04/12(Sun)08:35 No.1946796
    >>1946778

But the company pays the Government who built the road for the rights to toll it and in exchange they have to look after the road, provide breakdown recovery etc.

    Is that not fair?

If the Gov't is being reimbursed the cost of construction and then gets the road back in 50 years anyway, what's the bother>?
    >> Anonymous 03/04/12(Sun)08:35 No.1946800
But if the Government hands it over to a private company to run efficiently, that is free market.

So yes, it is free market.

Lots of things are like that. Public arenas, for example. What do you get out of it every time some team owner wants $1bil of your taxpayer money to build a new toy? High ticket prices gouged out the ass
    >> Anonymous 03/04/12(Sun)08:37 No.1946819
By all means privatise the construction, maintenance, and everything else you can. By all means have tolls. But privatising the road entirely will simply allow the owner to extract monopoly rents, which aren't in any way economically efficient. Unless there's a substitute toll road running alongside it owned by a competing operator anyway...

This is an example of people missing the point of privization, which is COMPETITION. If you don't have competation then a private monopoly will usually be even worse than a public one.

You don't kow shit about the free market which requires competition to drive down prices. It's a government-protected monopoly, plain and simple
    >> Anonymous 03/04/12(Sun)08:39 No.1946836
    >>1946800
You're missing the MARKET part. If there's no realistic alternative to the toll road then there's no market. It's a monopoly.
    >> Anonymous 03/04/12(Sun)08:40 No.1946850

By law there always has to be an alternative to a toll road, you're paying for the privilege of this road, be it shorter travel time, smoother ride whatever

There is always a free alternative.
