    More bluffing.

That's all this whole thing is, bluffing.

The US does not have the taste for another expensive war, especially against an opponent considerably more formidable, and in terrain a lot more difficult and rough.

The financial system is still shaky. Europe is in a major crisis. The last thing we need is 400 dollar a barrel oil.

The US and Iran aren't going to war, despite what the sensationalist media wants you to think.

Its all fun and games.. Ignore it.

Do you want to know when to pay attention to it? I'll tell you.. Syria must be dealt with first. Until Syria is neutralized, there shall be no military action directed at Iran. Syria is the key. When Syria falls, Iran will thereafter soon be fucked in the ass by so many U.S. and Israeli ordnance.

Israel does not have the capacity to wage war on Iran.

It does not have the political will to start firing nukes at Tehran and killing millions of innocent people for no reason.

It's airforce does not have the capability to do the day by day bombing.

If it acts it needs the support of the US.

What you're going to see is an Iranian resurgence, and there's nothing the US can really do about it except declare war, which they won't.

They also don't want to alienate the Iranians, they will be a valuable potential ally. More important than Saudi Arabia even, due to their unique position (access to the Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea, Caucasus, AND Central Asia, it would be an extremely valuable ally to the US against a Russian resurgence.), and the fact that the US is going to be forced to buy oil from them as Saudi production is strained by increasing demand.

Time is running out for the Israelis, and they will be compelled to strike. Israeli fighter-bombers do have the capacity to strike Iranian targets in western parts of said country, but would be operating on their limits.
Their strategy is probably to escalate to conflict to include the US, because using airstrikes against the Iranian nuclear program will only put them back on schedule, not stop the program completely.
They will also need American help to deal with Hamas and Hisbollah in the Gaza strip and Southern Lebanon respectively. Both are backed by Iran, and will most likely present a danger to Israel in case of a war against Iran.
    >> Anonymous 02/14/12(Tue)08:36 No.1644479
this is really interesting. Iran stated that it would sinik the ship if it returned.

If Iran doesn't attack, they've lost face and taht will mean that MANY more ships will arrive and all will be lost for Iran.

If they do attack, they will likely sink the ship, but they would have effectively started the war, giving nato permission to atatck Iran.

its fucking lose-lose for Iran. It will be interesting to see what happens.

The situation is not really for Americans to decide at the moment. The current US government is committed to back up Israel, and the Israelis will use this to their advantage. It's called escalation-domination. It doesn't even matter who starts the war, the Americans will be drawn to the conflict whether they like it or not.

Keep an eye on the news. A nuclear attack will unlikely come out of the blue from an enemy nation. Such an attack would likely be preceded by a deteriorating political situation. A war with conventional weapons between nations that both have nuclear weapons, if not ended swiftly, may escalate towards nuclear war; and even limited nuclear strikes in one region carry the likelihood to escalate towards an all-out nuclear war elsewhere

That whole trapping the US carrier fleet in the Strait is a funny scenario, except for the fact that in American doctrine fleets tend to move away from the zone of conflict before the fighting starts - like in 2003. Striking against US forces before they can withdraw to a safe distance would make Iranians the aggressor but letting them escape would be strategically stupid as well. Lose - lose.
I will say this again, the Israelis will start the war and Americans will join in sooner or later.
And the Israelis will start the war for they have no other alternative anymore.

Lol all that denial. One intelligent officer (and he is intelligent I've listened to him speak) showed the USA how it could improve on its methods, and got forced into retirement for doing well in the war games.

The reason it's disregarded is because the USA is full of old guards and amateurs who are just as jingoist and chauvanist as you.

USA is going to get pulverized by Iran precisely because Iran is completely outmatched by the USA's fleets and has to find alternative ways for dealing with the challenge which the USA will be completely unable to cope with because they're so head up their ass retarded and set in their ways.

There is NOT going to be a war between Iran and the US. In the end, the Obama Administration will offer to build Iran's Nuclear Energy Plant. In return, Iran destroys all its weapons making Nuclear material. Iran get the biggest prize of all, a US and EU open market for their products. They lose nuclear weapons, they gain wealth and technology like that of Japan and South Korea.

Small craft and subs launching sophisticated short range antiship missiles, probably. I could also see some sophisticated submarine drones releasing mines beneath ships to rapidly float to the surface and impact and surround the fleet.

Iran's best and brightest are working on the challenge. Cost effective ways to close the strait and keep it closed without a toe to toe encounter is an inescapable. Iran's not going to send their fleet up to engage the USA in a 'fair' fight, you dense child. They're going to use missiles and small skirmishing mosquito fleets to peck the US to death and put egg all over it's face.

While I agree on the money/supplies thing, I doubt they'll try and take over anywhere substantial while fighting. Maybe a little expansion, but the whole of Afghanistan? Really?

Israel on the other hand would have a perfect opportunity to finally blitz Gaza and West bank, most of southern Lebanon and expand quite comfortably into it. If the Iran thing kicks off, the Iranian-sponsored militas are hardly likely to stay quiet. It'll be 1982 all over again, but I doubt Israel would pull out again because this would be the kinda conflict that wouldn't be over quickly.

It's called simply being human. Wake up from fantasy land because at our core level, we are a violent warlike species. We have always, and will always fight with one another. This is the base nature of mankind.

    man will fight man
    man will fight woman
    neighbor will fight neighbor
    city will fight city
    state will fight state
    rich will fight poor
    race will fight race
    country will fight country

The ONLY possible way we would ever get along as a species is through the discovery of life on another planet. And that, only because we would immediately ban together to start fighting that new species, or if more advanced than us, befriend them until we gained their technology so we could turn it against them.

Welcome to life at it's truest.

They aren't going to attack an aircraft carrier. Do you have any idea how large and powerful the fleet of battleships is that escort the aircraft carriers? It's huge. They don't go anywhere without their compliment of fast attack ships. Anyone who attacked an aircraft carrier would be committing suicide.

This is the USS Abraham Lincoln and her battlegroup.

There is a pretty cool space MMO called Eve online.

Retards by big huge destroy ships. Smart people amass huge fleets of cheap replaceable ships.

Huge fleets of cheap replaceable ships win out against the most expensive shit every time.

Might not reflect reality, but economically it makes sense.

If you can launch 1,000 anti-carrier missiles at a supercarrier, for less than the cost of a super carrier.

The super carrier is taking a huge risk just by existing, since IF those 1,000 missiles get past AEGIS, the carrier is fucked.

IF it DOESN'T, they just try again with 2,000, and it's still cheaper than the super carrier.

War doesn't work that way. Because the problem is this you can't launch that many missiles at once because there is not enough launching platforms. Which also cost money to make, man, and deploy by the way. The other problem being when your first assault fails they don't take a break and let you try again. All you launch platforms are bombed. Now you have nothing.

Supersonic cruise missile max range 300km. Carrier based aircraft operational range 1000km. Have fun getting close especially with forward escorts 500 miles forward of the Carrier. And B52s loaded down with anti-shipping missiles patrolling from regional bases and 10 nuclear subs with predeployed conventional torpedoes in front of them waiting as a screen. And anti-shipping ballistic missiles have to get past the Standard Missile 3 screen put up by 50 escorts, and with shitty terminal guidance inherent to hypersonic missile due to ionization of the atmosphere around the warhead vehicle fucking with the sensor suit it probably won't hit a ship undergoing maneuvers.

Now you could ambush a carrier group going through a straight during peacetime but that would rely on land based systems rather than a navy. And enjoy getting your civil and military centers bombarded to shit by regional bombers equipped with cruise missiles in retaliation because if they keep them at range that is the only carrier you will sink.

How 'bout you compare Halo to infantry tactics next, I'm sure it will be insightful.

Launch pads for missiles can be as cheap as an old junker towtruck and there is no way to know just how many missiles that fleet can take down because a thing like this didn't happen yet.
But fact remains that economically there is probability of missiles of higher numbers penetrating and spreading ruin among the fleet and cheap.

The largest span a cable has ever crossed while supported only from the ends is the Pylons of Messina holding a power line across the 1.3 mile wide Strait of Messina.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pylons_of_Messina

The narrowest the Strait of Hormuz ever becomes is . . . 34 miles wide. So it would be an unprecedented feat of engineering (and virtually impossible) to span that gap with a cable supported from the ends on land.

Tomahawk missile range is 2500km subsonic and supersonic missiles wouldn't work en mass on dense targets in multiples.
    >forward escorts 500 miles forward of the Carrier
Escorts are the first ones that go down, expanding them one from another only makes each individually an easier target and Tomahawks can be controlled in their path so as to avoid or divert.

China has developed a missile system of small and thus much faster and harder to detect from materials and harder to hit missiles.
To say the least, glorifying a fleet that is yet to face the situation real time of hundreds of missiles coming at it is idiotic.
Thinking China won't support Iran by supplying and testing their missiles and systems through it is an even bigger moronic assumption and underestimate which could potentially cripple one.

I don't think so. But then again, trade relations will go on. That's the essence of proxy wars. The US made also covert tech transfer deals with the Soviets during the Cold War.

The US let the Chinese made contracts with Iraq after the invasion. The difference to Iran is that Iraq is now US controlled which gives the US more control over China.

China will support Iran but they won't declare a war because they still have Russia left as a partner although they seem to prefer to not be dependent on one source which is a smart decision.

Talks about the Tomahawk, a anti-emplacment not anti-shipping missile, rather than the Harpoon or it's eqivalvents. Do you know why the tomahawk has such range? Because it is huge, it has a high fuel:warhead weight ratio. Antishipping missiles esspecially supersonic ones have much shorter range because they have to be more maneuverable, carry more guidance systems so they can hit moving targets, and burn through fuel faster because they are supersonic. There is no anti-shipping cruise missile in existence with a range greater than 300km.

But thanks for pointing out that tomahawks launched from the carrier group can also threaten any shore emplacements that launch the anti-shipping missiles from beyond their range.

The issue is not that the fleet is invulnerable it's that these particular missiles are not the trump card you think they are.
