is not sacred. It predates Christianity. In Roman times, it was a
political arrangement between families. The bride's fam had to give a
dowery, representing wealth.
In Asian cultures, same idea, and it
evolved without Christian influence. Just after the Roman empire turned
into the Holy Roman Empire the church took over the officiating, but it
remained about politics. It is only until modern times, last 200-300
years, and especially last century, that marriage has become the coming
together of people who love each other.
So, when one invokes the
historical establishment of marriage, I hope one realizes that most
weddings that occur today would not have occured in a "traditional
setting" |
