191 KB Immigration does not cause unemployment Anonymous 01/10/12(Tue)09:25 No.1060809
    >There is no link between rising immigration and rising unemployment, independent economists have found contradicting persistent claims from anti-immigration activists and politicians that an influx of foreign nationals into the UK in recent years has led to more British-born workers on the dole.

    >The respected National Institute of Economic and Social Research found that there was "no association" between higher immigration and joblessness even at times of recession or low growth of the sort that Britain is experiencing at the moment.

    >In fact, the Institute's researchers suggested that the opposite might be the case and that immigration acts as an economic stimulus, pushing total employment levels higher and dole claimant numbers lower than they would otherwise have been.

    Wh..What?

I don't know what it's like in Britain, but on average here in Sweden it takes about 7 years for an immigrant to find a job.

You're not actually allowed to immigrate into most countries (including Sweden) without a verifiable source of income.

In Britain we have employment agencies, which favor foreign workers as they're cheaper and don't know their rights/complain about mistreatment.

So how come employment's at a high alongside immigration?

There's no direct link. But it does have a roundabout effect. Employers can offer immigrants slave wages, whereas they would have had to offer natives a decent wage.

Natives don't have the luxury of doing a few years hard work while living ten to a flat, then going home to a decent pile of money.

What are you talking about? That isn't the case here in Sweden atleast. Maybe you're talking about EU-immigrants?

Yes, that's part of the rule. You're allowed to have your family come over, but only if you can prove you can support them financially.

At least give government SOME credit, they have actually put some thought into this.

I don't think you realize quite how fucked the Swedish asylum/migrant system is. AFAIK you don't have to provide for them financially here although a lot of people want that changed.

I mean just a couple of months back we changed the law so that illegal immigrants would be able to get healthcare and education while here. I'm not even a big "hurr durr, they be invading us!!" but the Swedish system is seriously fucked.

You're talking about asylum seekers. That's a completely different situation from immigrants.
See, because of the ridiculous bureaucracy involved, asylum procedures can easily take ten years or more. In the mean time, asylum seekers aren't citizens and so would not be eligible for health care. The law was meant to at least keep them healthy/alive during the procedure.

No, I'm talking about illegal immigrants. People who seek asylum are not apart of that group.

People who are told to leave the country and do not are a part of that group.

It's prohibitively difficult to immigrate on your own to 1st world countries. The only realistic method is marrying somebody, or having relatives who already live there. Otherwise, the only way is to be a world class athlete, nobel laureate, or rich fucking enterpreneur, and in each case you would not have much reason to immigrate anyway since you can clearly do very well in your own country.

As a libertarian I am actually in favor of unfettered immigration, but I'm not going to pretend that it would not cause unemployment in certain regions. Of course it reduces unemployment among all individuals, which is what matters, not state, also most unemployment is due to arbitrary statism warping market forces.

Migration Watch (Right-Wing "Thinktank") are on this huge PR blitz at the minute because of this study that is in the independent and are in a panic because it makes their rather crock of shit stories and rent-a-quotes redundant.

This isn't a "hurr-leftist" thing either. Migration Watch sell their "research" and opinions to papers like the daily mail and actual studies disproving their opinions are going to fuck over business, so they are on this huge PR blitz at the minute to try drown out this study that was published because it will make them look like tits and no one wanting to buy their "Research" so they are all over the place today, even going on the BBC.

Lobby groups, pain in the ass, all of the time.

Yes, immigration causes higher unemployment / lowers job security. But if it still manageed to increase net economic output / taxable surplus then it will have served its purpose given the demographic shitstorm we're sailing into.

Europe is probably fucked beyond saving, since they show so little capacity to productively employ immigrants. The US, Canada, and Australia on the other hand are going to have to RADICALLY increase immigration rates in the coming decades if they want to maintain anything like their current living standards / lifeways. It won't be easy (Australia and Canada already have heroic immigration rates, although in the future we'll probably start placing less emphasis on older educated immigrants and more on the young and ambitious and willing to learn)
    >> Anonymous 01/10/12(Tue)14:42 No.1063955
It is a simple thing, this is OUR country, not the foreigners. They have no right to be here.

    Plain and fucking simple.

Also these "economic" arguments always use aggregates as if they were relevant.

What does it matter to me or you if the economy grows larger as our wages shrink? As the welfare state we are forced to pay for wont' even exist as we age?
How does it benefit us to have our neighborhoods destroyed, and the place you grow up now has signs in arabic?

    >> Anonymous 01/10/12(Tue)14:48 No.1064038
    >>1063987
Why do you say that? For what purpose?

Besides, I think the birth rate is cultural and economic / not really subject to government manipulation. The 'greatest generation' had a fuck tonne of kids because they grew up on farms and that's what people had always done since forever. The boomers had 2.1 kids because it seemed modern and they could easily afford it. Gen X had 1.5 kids because they were a bit more squeezed economically but could still basically afford it with some sacrifice. Gen Y will be lucky to have 1 kid per woman, and all those will be welfare moms, since there's no way to get a stable foothold in the middle class before your uterus has stopped working.
