What's your local camera shop (or shops) like?

My place is kind of condescending gearfags. It's great if you own a mid-level body and some decent glass, but they'll make you feel like a worthless little shit just for coming in and asking a stupid question. It sucked early on, but I don't mind them much now.

I've been thinking about it, though. I don't see why it would be hard for a camera shop to use some of their intended stock as rental gear instead, then after something like a year of making money on the rentals, send it in to a repair center to get it checked out, and sell it at like 60% of retail as a used but quality-assured gear.

It would seem to me that the rental business can make a reasonable amount of money and more importantly, develop some good credibility with local photographers as a go-to gear shop if you're in need.

In the Triangle, NC, there's two, one of them with two stores.

Peace Camera in Raleigh has an absolutely insane selection of old gear. When you think an old hand Photo Store, this is it. Crowded with stuff, musty, etc.

The inevitable, necessary tradeoff? They're stuck-up assholes, until and unless they see you buying film. Then they're civilized.

The other is Southeastern, which isn't nearly as awesome, but they're much nicer. In their Raleigh store, they do run a rental business like that, and in their Carrboro store they've got an full lab, including E6. I haven't used it, though; I've always run C41 to CCI in Durham and E6 to JW in Raleigh.

I understand there used to be an awesome store in Cameron Village, but it closed before I got to the area and was replaced by a smaller Wolf Camera, which I think is closed itself now.

    Wellington, NZ.
All the stores that sell new gear are pretty faceless. The two biggest ones try to support film, but carry shitty stock, and even worse stock of paper/chems. No biggie, it's cheaper from overseas anyway.
There is one hidden gem of a used store though, and two places that are repair experts for old gear, so I can't complain too much. I never buy anything new here though.

From where overseas can you buy chemicals, and is it legal?

Tempe Camera - somewhat normal, mentor-like owners and workers.

Photomark - lolpro faggots who think they're better than you and everyone else.

Ahh! Where the hell is this? I wouldn't mind working there at all...

But the more I think about it, the easier it seems it would be to bring good service and convenience to photography stores. It would just be an issue of getting the funding - I can't imagine anyone wanting to give you the startup funds you'd need to get a decent variety of lenses in stock. And that's to say nothing of the location, advertising, etc... that you start paying when you open up the actual store.

    i live in brooklyn.
i visit adorama and B&H all the time, which is where i buy film and test out all kinds of gear. but i only buy digital gear from newegg.com because its always significantly cheaper, usually because of taxes

Ran into a small shop in Akasaka recently that has a fuckton of vintage cameras. I don't think I've ever seen so many Leicas and Hasselblads in a single area before.

Didn't get the name of the place though.

Oh sweet, do you do your own B&W developing/would like to? There's a surprising amount of people here that do it + colour developing at home too. I'm just starting to get into making my own developer/fix from raw chemicals. It's more than possible here. You just have to search a lot to do it.
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)07:16 No.992306
    >>992296
Compared to where? There is a reasonably high level of ownership, and if you know where to go you can get one illegally. But gun ownership is pretty strict by the book. Though in a country with a rich farming tradition and a lot of keen hunters, there's a few of them out there.

    for a rifle
you need a few witnesses to say your not a nutter, show where the guns will go and not have been in jail that's about it.

    handguns
I think you need to show that your a collector and go through much more scrutiny on character witnesses

anything auto and i think semi-auto is a no go unless your the army

there's not alot of guns here tho we just don't care for them that much unless you go out hunter oh and they recently made spotlighting illegal so we can't drive around shooting on car's anymore

    >>992319
well here its more like how you gonna hunt with a handgun so there isnt much point.

we don't "have the right to bear arms" or anything like that, so anything that can't be used for hunting they will wounder why you have it and whats it for hence the collector thing.

    Really.
We've got some bodies yeah, a few lenses, one shop has Sigma and that's it. A few flashes.

Not in huge numbers, but you'd be surprised.
But in saying that, there's no reason why any civilian needs to own a handgun, but that's a kettle of fish I wish I hadn't opened here.
    >> carlos !!CKaxigMp2QE 09/09/10(Thu)07:48 No.992335
    They're all shit.
They're full of entry level shits and maybe have a 5dmk2 and a L glass on the front of the shop to make all teenagers go "WOOAH". They only sell kodak consumer film and they look weird at you if ask for film. Last time I bought one I was looking for a B&W film and girl at the desk tells me "just buy colour and you can make it B&W if you want later"
They're decent for printing photobooks though

In Barcelona, Casanova Foto and Arpi
    PROS:
    - They sell anything from shitty casio p&s to H4D 'blads, chemicals, lighting stuff, books, large format stuff, second hand stuff...
    - Guys who work there know their stuff.
    - They have their own repair service themselves

    CONS:
Highly overpriced. Specially second hand stuff, but it comes with one year warranty...
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)09:42 No.992406
