As for me: When I was 24 I was handed 15'000 pounds (At the time $28'000) Inheritance. I blew it in 2 years, and with the final grand decided to buy something that might last longer than my "comically large" hat collection.

Needed to do an extra GCSE. Enjoyed art, but can't paint, draw, mould, sculpt, design, build, sketch or craft. Found out they had a darkroom at the back of the department; they had cameras for loan, provided the chemicals and gave you a complementary packet of A4 Ilford paper. Started bunking off art lessons and screwing around in the dark room, somehow got an A* at GCSE. Did it again at A level because hey, it's the easiest (and only) A* I've ever got in anything. In the end I got 98% in my A level art, endorsed photography. Now I just do it as a hobby.

    tl;dr: school.

I got into photography since I asked my father for a camera. My first camera was a Kodak Easy Share Camera, it was a point and shoot one and I used it for three years. Many times I took photographs of what interested me. But the camera was put to good use at anime conventions where I took photos of cosplayers.

That camera has since been retired and I use another point and shoot camera made by Canon that has a Image Stabilization feature.

Me and my dad always used to develop B&W film in one of the rooms in our basement when I was a kid. I always enjoyed that and I'll probably get to do it again next time I'm back at home. Also, I got one of his old Canon FTb's quite a while ago and loved it. Then I moved into digital a few years ago when I found my used 20D at a damn good price.

I've always had an interest. My parents would buy me film before going on holidays when I was as young as 4-5 to throw through point and shoots. I'd often come back with a roll or two left over and usually just took photos of every day things. It kind of grew from there.
Probably in the blood. My grandfather worked for Kodak before the war.

Whenever my parents got a disposable camera, i would always take it when they were done and just take pictures of whatever. they werent good, but still

then i saw digital cameras and thought it would be cool to have one, and it would be like a robotic eye or some shit. MY first digital point and shit (i was using other peoples) was a canon powershot sd1000, and i thought it was really good, better than the DSLRs i saw (i even thought they were just meant to look old). i took pictures of whatever i thought looked interesting.

then i started getting more into it, but still didnt know shit. after a couple of years with that, i got the Canon Powershot SD780 IS. it was 12 megapickels so i thought it would be just as good as a DSLR. then after being retarded with that i got even more into it, and started teaching myself about ISO and exposure which is basically the only thing i can change on this camera.

ill have my first DSLR soon

pic is from a trip to chicago with my SD1000, it was my only "good" picture and it still sucks

I took a photography class in college just so I would have an excuse to use some of the discretionary funds from my student loan to buy a cool camera. before, the most advanced photographic implement I had ever used was a disposable point'n'shoot. I bought a Canon AE-1 Program on ebay and went right to work on our first project, which was basically just to fill a roll of 24 exposures over the course of a day.

went I showed my first round of prints to the class, everyone was dazzled. especially the professor. from that project, we moved on to developing our own rolls and making our own prints, and pretty soon other professors and department heads were offering to buy my prints. pretty soon I found myself committing 100% of my time, energy, and money into building my craft and I haven't slowed down since. if you'll excuse the pun, photography just clicked for me.

that was a little over a year ago, and now I do well enough critically and commercially with my work to almost fully support myself financially. I've got my own studio and I'm well on my way to earning my MFA.

here's one of the first proper photographs I ever took.

I'd always liked how a good photograph was a good way of portraying a good memory, like an old but professional portrait.

Got my DSLR a year ago and started into the "nice camera = nice pictures lolol" phase.

Started composing better, doing less "Heavy" (Read - over saturation and contrast) PP and taking my time.

Haven't done anything over the summer as of yet, but it doesn't help that I'm a student and work a full time job and want to be obscenely social with long distance friends.

are you looking for the literal reason why i started? I started photography in college when i took a black and white film class, although after that semester i didnt stick with it. it wasnt until 2 years later that i was going on a backpacking trip around europe that i decided i wanted a nice dslr to take with me. then when i got home it sorta stuck and since then photography has gradually become a bigger and bigger part of my life, and has pretty much turned into what defines me more than anything else.

however, i often think of why im into photography on a deeper, subconscious level. my grandfather was a published photographer, had his own darkroom, shot with a leica m3, etc etc, so im sure that has something to do with it. it definitely goes beyond that though.

im sort of an emotional cripple, like a lot of guys i never express my emotions, but i obviously still have them. i suppose photography is a way to express those emotions in a society where a guy like me has to portray this image of the 'alpha male', always tough and in control, never letting anyone in. i guess its a form of release for me. its also a constructive activity that i can do alone, and while i do lead a very active social life, part of me will always be a 'lone wolf', so to speak.

also, being really good at it helps.

I had a basic photography section in an art class i took in middle school and I really enjoyed it. Now I'm taking a black and white film photography class for college and it's really interesting learning how to use an old school film camera and develop my own film and photos. Not many people have the opportunity to do that.

i got into it because i was young and there was a camera around. i got serious about it because i figured out that I couldn't draw worth a shit.

My question to all of you is, what makes you keep taking pictures? Real progress in photography is slow going and hard earned, and I know most of you have given up once or twice (I have). What made you get back on the horse, or what kept you on there?
