you're going to hike avoid DSLRs. They're heavy and chunky and you
probably won't be able to use them properly (No offense: it takes time). In
your situation I would buy a good compact with decent auto modes for
when you get tired of manual controls. If you know you won't need focal
lenght (i.e you will only shoot landscapes), I'd go for the Panasonic
LX3: it's very good and old enough so as not to be expensive. If you
think you'll need some zoom, forget it as the LX3 only has a 2.5 zoom.
In that case I would go for a Canon G11, which is chunkier but still
very portable, has less of a wide angle but a lot more zoom. Doesn't go
as low in ISO or as high in aperture as the LX3, but I've been told it
renders better colours in difficult low-light conditions. It only does
4:3 and 16:9 whereas the LX3 also does 3:2. You'll miss that last
format if you ever have pro- or semi-pro ambitions. But otherwise,
probably not that much. The G11 doesn't do HD video, so if you need
that, forget it again. (You probably don't need HD video anyway, to be
honest). The G11 used to be ludicrously expensive but it's 1 year old
now so you should be able to get one for well under $500, which is
quite a good price. The G11 has many more controls on the box itself (as opposed to in menus). Don't
use the viewfinder on the G11: it's a steaming pile of shite. Always
trust the LCD (which is far too small due to it being hinged, but
anyway). Take-home message: The panasonic LX3 is damn good but lacks zoom. The G11 is more versatile but has a few design flaws. IQ
is kinda equivalent for both, the Canon has a softer focus
(surprisingly!) has slight limitations in the "f/", "ISO", and
"wide-angle" departments (if you forget the absence of HD video) but it
is overall much more versatile so I would probably get that if I were
you. (being me, I got a Pana LX3 instead. But I couldn't care less
about zoom when it comes to compacts.)
