Good evening, /p/huckers. I know jack shit about cameras and photography, but recent need requires that I become competent enough to take some fuckwin shoots, as well as a short, decent to high quality video.

tl;dr: derp in cameras with no gear, need to underp. wat do?

Which DSLR would you recommend to get the job done, and how should I get better with it?

I fucking hate it when chantards go around using little names for different board members like '/p/hag' or /p/hucker. It's especially more annoying on /p/ because it's not even spelled right.

the rebels are made out of flimsy plastic and have terrible button placement
they also have overly dense sensors that produce lots of noise and shitty metering/autofocus unless you have a portable supernova to light your subject

Unless absolutely required by these "recent needs" don't get a dSLR just yet. Buy a good all-manual compact. The Pana LX3 has hi-def video and pretty amazing sensor and glass for example, iso 80 to 3200 and open as high as f 2.0 so it's a good choice if you don't need focal lenght. The Canon G11 is not bad either (but doesn't have HD video or iso 80 and looks ugly to me. More expensive, too).
Get used to that camera, learn to use it and THEN buy a DSLR. That way you can probably jump the "crappy entry-level DSLR" step and you'll be left with a very good compact and a good DSLR (both of which you'll use for years) instead of a crappy DSLR and a good one, i.e. a camera that you won't use at all and which you won't probably be even able to sell.
Plus you'll end up buying a good compact anyway if you're gonna be serious about photography, so might as well begin with that.

Oh go get laid already FFS! Plus, the s90 is not even that good anyway. At most a lower-high-range compact.

I hear the Ricoh CX3 is not bad either, and more versatile than the LX3. Thoughts?

Here's the deal: I intend to go up mt. Kilimanjaro at the end of the year(weather at its worst, peak at its best), and after my previous experience in Africa I want to have something better than my dad's7 year old Olympus.
I could just bu separate cameras for stills and for video, but I don't like the idea of lugging a lot of equipment around.

DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy a t2i. Way too expensive for what it is, way too expensive and chunky for how you will use it.
Don't get a s90 either, because it's just bad value for money.
    >> Anonymous 07/20/10(Tue)19:50 No.923462

If you're going to hike avoid DSLRs. They're heavy and chunky and you probably won't be able to use them properly (No offense: it takes time).
In your situation I would buy a good compact with decent auto modes for when you get tired of manual controls. If you know you won't need focal lenght (i.e you will only shoot landscapes), I'd go for the Panasonic LX3: it's very good and old enough so as not to be expensive. If you think you'll need some zoom, forget it as the LX3 only has a 2.5 zoom. In that case I would go for a Canon G11, which is chunkier but still very portable, has less of a wide angle but a lot more zoom. Doesn't go as low in ISO or as high in aperture as the LX3, but I've been told it renders better colours in difficult low-light conditions. It only does 4:3 and 16:9 whereas the LX3 also does 3:2. You'll miss that last format if you ever have pro- or semi-pro ambitions. But otherwise, probably not that much. The G11 doesn't do HD video, so if you need that, forget it again. (You probably don't need HD video anyway, to be honest). The G11 used to be ludicrously expensive but it's 1 year old now so you should be able to get one for well under $500, which is quite a good price.
The G11 has many more controls on the box itself (as opposed to in menus).
Don't use the viewfinder on the G11: it's a steaming pile of shite. Always trust the LCD (which is far too small due to it being hinged, but anyway).
Take-home message: The panasonic LX3 is damn good but lacks zoom. The G11 is more versatile but has a few design flaws.
IQ is kinda equivalent for both, the Canon has a softer focus (surprisingly!) has slight limitations in the "f/", "ISO", and "wide-angle" departments (if you forget the absence of HD video) but it is overall much more versatile so I would probably get that if I were you. (being me, I got a Pana LX3 instead. But I couldn't care less about zoom when it comes to compacts.)

That's some good information. Thanks Anon.
I've been considering the LX3, but one of the issues I had with the camera I went with last time was the lack of range, so some of the times I had to chase these fuckers around(pic related) until I got a good shot, and some of the other times the object was just too damn far away to get a good shot at(missed some great cheetah shots because of this).
Again, I could potentially separate the video and stills factors into two cameras, but I don't know if the increased inventory space/hassle will be better than lugging a bulky DSLR around.
