If /p/ can watch the BBC iPlayer or grab or torrent then I highly reccomend this documentary:

    >Killer Image - Shooting Robert King

What makes an inexperienced photographer decide he wants to cover wars in the most dangerous parts of the planet?

In this documentary, filmmaker Richard Parry follows photo-journalist Robert King from his first brush with war in the Balkans in his early twenties to his Time magazine shoots in Chechnya. King seems like a danger addict and yet craves peace. His early naivity transforms itself to deep cynicism. He seems traumatised, yet continues to work.

This compelling portrait asks two powerful questions about war journalists: why do they do it and how do they survive it?

quick history lesson: America only joined after pearl harbour. The battle of britain had already been fought. By that time His majesty's royal empire was already bringing it to the Jerries. America's presence was nice to have but we were doing fine without you. As for your atom bomb. You only dropped it as a dick measuring contest with Russia. Japan was already crippled by that stage and looking for a way to surrender with some sort of dignity. It was the single most disgusting act of brutality committed against civilians throughout the entire war. I'm amazed no american was ever brought before the Hague but then history is written by the victors.

You now realize that the US is still to this day in 2010 using purple hearts that were produced in expectation of the invasion of japan. You are also aware that many many more japanese would have died in a full scale invasion and that the japanese were willing to force america into a deadly city by city bloodbath. you are also aware that the japanese surrendered a week before the russians would have invaded japan.

tldr: 200,000-300,000 japanese dead was light considering the alternatives

Really this debate is still raging?

Ok it was World War 2, bombing cities was the norm. The Britian and their Lancaster bombers as well as US B-17s bombed the shit out of German cities. Germany bombed London and other British cities. The US dropped Napalm all over Japan's paper and wood cities, yet there's a huge debate over the last two bombs to fall (not literally the last two, but you get my point).

It's war, it's ugly and no one comes out smelling like a rose.

The guy just got a plane ticket to Bosnia and was stealing food from the Holiday Inn buffet without an agent or anything. Even if you don't sell any pictures you'll have one fucking awesome adventure and get a load of experience.

Iraq and Afghanistan are over populated with PJs though and you could see his frustration at having to be an embed in the documentary so I wouldn't bother with them just now.

Find some shithole in the world that's going tits up, or is a good bet to be the next place to go tits up and buy a ticket.

That's exactly it....embeds are wastes of time. I've been waiting for some place to start going apeshit so I can go over there, hoping that it coincides with me actually having enough money to fly somewhere.
Got another photog friend in town who just got back from Uganda and has a freelance contract with NYT who would sell his dick to go along on this sort of thing...just gotta suspend all hope for a normal life and do it. This docu confirmed it.

I saw that movie one of its first ever screenings in Bergen at last year film festival. Then there was some questions asked to the filmmaker. He seemed like a likeable guy, and the audience applaued him. Though the main speaker there who asked some questions to him before the audience got to, was clearly anti-war, and a dumbass. You could see that he did not like this guy, and answered as good as he could to his dumb questions.

    Recommend this movie. 8/10

    again. thanks

Fuck Year! OP here, strangely proud of creating (apart from the genocide/WW2 rants in the middle) a fairly succesful thread on /p/ and introducing you guise to a decent doco.

I was willing to stream it from iplayer for everyone not n the UK but figured out I'd only be able to do it via a screencast type thing and the frame rater would of been terrible.

ITT americans still want it, cant have it.

You're really not missing much. Its basically an American photographer shitting himself while european photographers walk around him telling him not to do stupid things. Then he tries to make himself look slightly more butch by shooting a deer, which he also fails at. He even tries to make his Post traumatic stress sound whimsical by muttering something about screwing prostitutes and doing drugs, as if it helps him.

OR, Amerifags like myself can lrn2proxy and watch it like I did. The dialectic of him being more wise and calmly hunting deer and failing in 2007 matched with him being extremely naive and almost being hunted in 1990's is what makes the documentary so damn interesting....it's a much older Rob King reflecting on the younger Rob King.
Quit getting butthurt over the fact that you'll never live a life of a photographer anywhere close to what he's done. Don't know how you Eurofaggots do things but in America hunting (loosely called "hunting" since it's mostly waiting and failing at shots) is relaxing as hell, an opportunity to get away from the rest of the world and focus on your own semi-primal instincts. The documentary does a great job of showing that...if you can't see that aspect of it then you're just another wannabe photog who does not see the larger aspect of journalism and will ultimately fail at creating a career out of shooting photos.
Have a great time failing at shooting photos you close-minded faggot

who said i wanted to make a career out of it?

    >an opportunity to get away from the rest of the world and focus on your own semi-primal instincts

What by shooting things in the face? Just admit that you do it for fun for fucks sake.

The underlying thread of the documentary (once you get past the egotism), is that he was an enthusiastic, but crappy photographer, and he still is. The fact that he went to a warzone is makes him very courageous, yes, but you also ultimately see the damage it did to him. How other journos treated him like crap, how his own people treated him like crap. And how his career is very difficult and with little reward or recognition.

I identify with the guy...I'm as fucked in the head right now as he was when he started, no lie. This is extremely appealing to me and if I die without a contract then so be it...at least I had a goddamn adventure in my life. Beats sitting in a cubicle.
