I find street one of the most interesting and exciting fields. You never know what you can capture if you are patient enough. Not to mention it is one of the most accessible forms of photography. You may or may not look like a creep, but you can capture the most extraordinary photos in street. And capturing great photos is the point in the end.

Streetphotography is just like any other form of photography, you either hate it or love it. Street: nothing but snapshits of stupid people. Nature: nothing but stupid flowers, trees and sunsets. Concert: nothing but guys with guitars. Portrait: just people posing, no reality. Fashion: bunch of anorexic girls running around. If you don't like a certain type of photography, don't do it.

And what I mean is "interestingness" is subjective. I live in a place with lots of prostitutes who throw themselves at any tall guy with white skin and a camera and I find it dull already. There are pictures to be taken everywhere and it's just that you're already bored of your surroundings (and the people in them) to notice.

But all photographers and not just street photographers are regarded as creepy fucks.

I have nothing against landscape photography, I was just posting in a troll thread.

You'll only get looked at and thought of as a creep if you are, in fact, a creep. If you look and act like a normal human being, smile and engage your subject instead of just hiding behind shit, sneaking shots and then running away, people don't have a problem with you taking their picture. It helps if you're a young, attractive, outgoing person too, If I was some old ugly guy with his socks pulled up to his knees I'd probably get bitched out once in a while.

If you act like a weirdo sneaking around forests trying to get pictures of elusive birds or something you're just as much of a creep, it's just that usually nobody sees you. Which is exactly why you basement dwelling introverts feel more comfortable doing landscapes. It require no interaction with people, and there are no people around to think you're being a creepy fuck.

It's not really that surprising that 4channers have a problem with street photography, because in general, you really have no idea how to deal with people. Of course you get treated as a creep, you ARE a creep. This is why you hate street photography, because you can't do it. Even if you had the balls to do it you'd undoubtedly get your ass kicked by some old, cane-wielding grandmother.

step 3: wear clothes, preferably what you're not presently wearing (if you are presently wearing clothes)

step 4: have a definable "concept" of why you are presently shooting what you are shooting.

I end up liking or appreciating about 1 in 30 'street' photos posted here. Id probably like the genre more if there was more selectivity as to what was displayed. There's some really interesting stuff,but you have to wade through loads of turds and snapshits to find a prize.

There are a few people out there constantly lurking /p/, looking for my posts.... and if they think they can 'own' me with it later they take a screenshot of it and archive it.

Wow, I think I understand now. As I started to shoot sporadic street photo with my cell phone I noticed the difference from using a DSLR in the same situations. Less focus on the camera, more focus on being in the situation and work quickly. I guess a range finder must be the ultimate freedom for street photos that still gives acceptable quality (as opposed to my old cell phone). Now I own a Leica.

And so here I am a year later. I think less of myself than I did a year ago, if only because I've been severely humbled. I know I've gotten better, but only now do I truly understand just how far I have to go before I become a competent artist. I understand what I need to learn far better than I ever have. Most of all, I've realized that perhaps art plays a bigger part in my life than I'd ever given it credit for.

So I just wanted to take this time to thank you guys. The bitter rants, the resources, the threads, the namefags, every one of you, every piece of this board. You've changed my life for the better, in a way that I never could have anticipated. You've given me direction in life. You've given me purpose. Yeah, about the newbies with their pro-looking xti cameras with the vert grips. Keep your gear in the car. Play photographer on your own dime, not mine. Pack a PS camera like you're supposed to. Otherwise you're just confusing people. I will recognize you instantly as an overzealous hobbyist, but the groom's mother (or whoever) may not. Whether they embrace your presence or shun it, you are a menace. I don't have the time, the interest or the patience in talking to you about my profession while I'm in the middle of a shoot. My advice to you is just don't be there. Send me a resume. Work as an assistant. Get a BFA at a reputable school. Cut your teeth somewhere else.

This is going to sound counter-intuitive, rude and snobbish, but the way I see it, the worst thing about the advent of digital photographic equipment and instant on-the-spot feedback is that it has allowed non-professionals to produce professional-looking results. You "lolstrobist" types are the worst of the lot, I'm afraid. You cost me money. You cost me jobs. Not because you are skilled, although some of you are (to varying degrees), but because you can self-correct as you go. The result here on /p/ is a board of pretty snazzy photos, but in opposition to what a previous poster stated, the image is NOT all that matters.

the reasons you people come up with for hating street photography are ridiculous. i mean, its obvious you have some other issue with it, if you just didnt like it you just wouldnt do it. theres a lot more to it than just not liking it though, isnt there? its almost as if youre jealous of the people who do it. its like when fat ugly chicks scowl at hot chicks, and make comments about some inane detail about the hot chick, trying to point out some insignificant flaw like 'omg did you see that freckle on her shoulder? eww id die if i had a freckle'.

grow up people, if you wanna do street photography, man up and do it. if you dont wanna do it, then dont. i get the feeling that most of this hate is coming from people that dont have enough balls to actually do it. its like, one of the only forms of photography that actually require courage, quick thinking and a personable nature. things which im guessing most of you lack.

Here's a street project that is relevant, its all context really. Basically its a contest where street photographers submit photo's of the downtown eastside, which is pretty much bombed out here, best photo's are accepted and printed, funds are redirected back into the community, so in this particular context, street photography also has a social conscience which elevates it beyond most other forms.
