Fight the semen (LOLraiding/p/) with gearfaggotry.

I'm thinking of trading in my kitlens for a 50mm f/1.8. I have a 70-200mm, and I'm just tired of how shitty my kitlens is. What do you think?
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)22:31 No.760145
    I think semen

WOW, youre really going to get on the board just to post something so intellectually void and irritating? Its people like you that make me spray semen.

don't worry; the semen thread's disappeared now. Us LOLraiding sheep may well stop about now. also I like semen

If the way the lens draws the picture, it's technical performance, and its field of view on your sensor are all things that would satisfy you, yes.

Seriously, /p/eople, gear advice threads are fine. But you can't present this shit as abstract bullshit and expect useful help. They're tools. What you should use depends 100% on the purpose you're putting it to.

Understand the technical and aesthetic aspects of everything related, define your needs, research, and only then if you're stumped and nothing meeting them satisfactorily on your budget comes up ask /p/.

Also, don't bump on the first page of /p/. Fifth absolute minimum.

buy it, its good to learn how to zoom with your feet rather than using your kit zoom lens.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)23:08 No.760189
OP here, thanks, I think I'm going to do it.

    >>760180
Thanks for the well-thought out response instead of "sage for gear thread" or whatever. Your answer, despite not really knowing the entire question, helped a lot.

I use my 24mm, 55mm and 85mm more so then my 18-55mm and 55-250mm zoom lens every day.

I barely touch my 17-55/2.8 unless i really need the wide. 50/1.4 and 85/1.2 all the way
    >> Anonymous 04/05/10(Mon)00:59 No.760317
Nooo, the 50mm goes zooms in too much on a crop sensor! You have to take the picture from across the room to get a full body shot of a short person. Get something 35mm or below. You can almost always walk into something to zoom in, but it's pretty rare to be able to the opposite. I sold my 50mm

seconded. for crop get a 24mm or 28mm.

I suggest crappy third party manual film lenses, as they cost like $20. Unless you have a Nikon cause those are crippled to not take them.

I know that is NOT the advice most people on /p/ or any gearfag would give, but there is a method to the madness. The center of a lens is always sharp, the edges are where shit goes south on crappy lenses for distortion, softness, vignette, etc.
Put a film lens on a crop camera the edges don't show anyway, so you won't notice the difference between a cosina, a sigma, or a nikkor. FF is another story, but for crop even a reasonably crappy FF lens is usually a way better performer than any new cheaper crop kit lens.

Try to keep your kit lens- you will probably miss the wide in the end, and you won't get very much money for it. And if you are using Nikon, go for the 35/1.8- it's an awesome little lens.

    I have the Nikkor 50mm f1.4 and it's awesome.
