  • Kimmo Alm aka "Sysop" from AnT has been spamming us for YEARS now, and has recently stepped it up. This shit has got to fucking stop. As promised, here are all of the e-mails he has sent me over the years (and my responses).

We've done all we can do about him. We've banned THOUSANDS of proxies, and deleted OVER A HUNDRED THOUSAND spam posts. His attacks continue though, and we've reached the limit of what we can do.
edit: we aren't going to add captcha.

Basic composition rules, maybe this will help keep the new/p/hags from posting snapshots. I'll start, Rule of thirds.

    >> Anonymous 03/11/10(Thu)20:40 No.731381
    please, go on.

rule of thirds, level horizon, these are all things i learned about in the first week of having a camera, but i don't feel like i completely understand composition.

give us some more pointers, pros.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/10(Thu)20:48 No.731383
I'll throw some things out there I think about but if some /p/ro disagrees, well fuck you.

-fill the frame: in other words, make the entire frame contain interesting stuff

-color: make sure to have something of interesting color in there. unless it's b&w durr.

-don't be afraid to tilt: it's okay to have crooked images, as an effect.

that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Diagonals, leading lines, parallel lines, intersecting lines, etc. Basically, a lot of it has to do with lines leading your eyes all throughout the photograph. First to your subject, then all around the frame. Also, rule of thirds

tl;dr Lines and rule of thirds.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/10(Thu)21:03 No.731395
having something interesting in your frame is more important than composition

    tldr: f/8 and be there

    CONTRASTS; big/small, dark/light, thick/thin, warm/cold, long/narrow. Complementary colors, Foreground-Middleground-Background, Repeating.

Also; the 7 basic principles of composition =

Balance, ´Whole´, Contrast, Highlight, Pattern, Movement and Rythm.

I really like this photo. Is it an example of bad composition, though?

well I don't think it is perfect, but I am just curious as to how people will analyse the composition. What is happening in the photo?

    This is kind of wishy-washy.
I am fine with vague to not misrepresent photography and teach people bad habbits, but all I can do now is take tones of pictures for practice and try to think of what looks nice.

sorry guys I dont follow rules!
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)04:37 No.731781
Frame your subject with an even number of other elements. Three is a good rule of thumb (=subject + two surrounding objects). This makes your subject seem friendly and comforting and the whole composition visually pleasing. Even numbers produce symmetries, which can make the composition seem forced.

Similar "rule" applies to context too. One or two things are not enough to make a picture interesting and too much stuff can be too much. Three is a good number. Example:

Photo of a flower - boring
Photo of a drop of dew on a flower - still boring
Photo of a bug in a flower with a drop of dew - Interesting
    >> Project !dashI8UpO. 03/12/10(Fri)04:41 No.731782
They're more like suggestions anyway. I've gotten to the point where I don't really consciously take note of them anymore. I just point my camera at something that looks interesting then play with the angle, walk around to good light, until it looks good.
    >> Project !dashI8UpO. 03/12/10(Fri)04:43 No.731785
    >>731395
bullshit, that only applies to photojournalism. A good photographer is able to make something boring look interesting through perspective and lighting.

That's why people are into shitty HDR. It's "pretty".

always feel free to break these rules.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)07:31 No.731870
this are not really rules, but you photographs will be more generally more appealing if you follow them, because the human mind works that way

    Rule of thirds
    Level horizon

    >>731679
Yes it is quite badly composed.
    Uneven horizon
    Ugly blurry sand/rocks in foreground
Subjects are tiny and don't add anything to the picture (normal beach clothes, separate groups)
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)10:26 No.731926
There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.
