Your friend is an idiot. You can recover pretty much anything that is located on an NTFS or FAT32 file system. He should have used better recovery software to begin with, now if he goes back over the drive with a better program his chances of getting everything back are even smaller.

I would have liked to see your friend's photos and stories.
Now we are stuck with DeadPicsL's stuff.

The stupidity of your friend is beyond comprehension. (S)he should have check and triple check that the data was on the external hard drive and then unplugged it completely while installing. Also, asking God for help recovering files? (S)he got exactly what was coming.

I had a similar problem a while ago, but I recovered everything but the porn folder.

Use multiple HDDs to store your data and when you screw up STOP USING THAT DRIVE.

The data remains on the drives until you overwrite it.

if all he did was install OS's, then his stuff should be in a folder called "windows.old", but if it isn't, sucks for him.
