ITT your encounters with other hobbyists

I thought I was an obsessed loser but that was until I visited my local photography hobby shop. Damn, it's full of people worst off than me.

I'm shooting at a school event. guy with camera stands next to me for thirty minutes. nervously inquires, "is that a 50D?"

I already know he has one too. I saw it from thirty feet away when he first arrived. I say, "yes."

he responds timidly - "nice camera, man!"

I just say, "...yes.", and go back to shooting.

I used to be in a photog club a long time ago, and I'm feeling it bro, they were the creepiest bunch of social misfits ever to gather in one place.

I was in a fyutor shot fiddling with the various entry-level cameras they had on display, and there was a guy old enough to be my grandfather doing the same. We said nothing to each other for a few minutes, switched sides, and I think he was the first to speak. We ended up talking about all sorts of things: the differences in various models, what 35mm cameras were good. We spoke for a total of at least an hour, I gave him some advice on choosing a DSLR, suggested dpreview. It took forty-five minutes before we actually learned each other's names.

    felt good man

why? the only thing he said to me was some stupid gearfag bullshit. what was I supposed to say back?

you must be hilariously awkward irl if you think I'm a dick for not welcoming this guy's social timidity with open arms and a blowjob.
    >> Anonymous 02/10/10(Wed)03:28 No.693988
I tend to hate other photographers IRL.

    Full-time pro, btw.

    Guess that's why I'm on 4chan :-\

I don't ever approach other photogs in public, I wouldn't have anything to say to them really. People sometimes ask me what kind of camera I am using, or they'll notice it's a dslr and just assume it's nice and compliment me (its a k100d lul). Other than that I've been asked a few times who I shoot for when I'm in public places.

I tried joining my univ's photography club. I initially expected to meet cool people, other hobbyists and hopefully some filmfags. First orientation there and it was apparent that I was better technically and more passionate/enthusiastic about photography than most members. Like any club at the univ though, they had an application process complete with "initiation" of some kind. My impression though was that they needed me, not the other way around, so I shouldn't be jumping through hoops or something like that. I ended up skipping that part but they still made me a member anyway. Cool people nonetheless so I still hang around.

It involves expensive gear that have specifications with numbers you can count. Therefore, it has elitist applications.
    >> Anonymous 02/10/10(Wed)05:19 No.694072
Eurgh photographer "hobbyists" to me are generally ugly ass indie scenster bitches with kit lens rebels who hold them wrong, chimp every photo and annoy bands at gigs by constantly firing the built in flash (which auto pops up btw)

They make me ashamed to have my gear at a gig, and it hurts me deep when afterwards someone might say "I bet you and Angie got heaps of good photos"

I have a canon 350D and it's definitely nothing special, but on the otherhand, if i'm just learning how to use an slr properly (take decent photo's), why would I shell out $5000 for semi decent gear?

But yes, almost every photographer i've met creeps me out.

    >I just say, "...yes.", and go back to shooting.
On New Year's Eve, I was out shooting the festivities and a guy looked over at me and was all like "Hey, I think we've got the same camera!"

He was shooting a Nikon D60. I was shooting my Canon 5D.

    (I could've understood if he were shooting a D2x since that's what my strap says, but I don't get how he could've mistaken a 5D for a D60...)

I met few photographers. Newer had any problems , never talked about the gear. I hate talk about equipment, i just literaly don't give a shit. I sometimes exchange good places with others when shooting on events. Sometimes giving some hints sometimes reciving some.

Met an older guy when I was shooting seagulls on the beach on morning. Told me when he was in the army, he was stationed in Germany, and got to use Lieca and Ricoh gear. Also told me C41 developing was hell, but I already knew that.

I was surprised by the local photography group, most of them didn't seem to have a real firm grasp on the more techinical aspects of their cameras(aperture, focal length, ect.). But they enjoy shooting, so I guess it just means they aren't gearfags.
