197 KB How much shit does /p/ lug around? Anonymous 09/24/09(Thu)23:21 No.543504
So, I was thinking about how much of a bitch lugging my crap every day is, and I remembered having a "what's in the bag?" thread a while back. Decided to unload my camera bag and snap a pic of all this shit.

How much crap do you other /p/hotogs carry? How often?

Aside from this stuff, I carry another laptop bag with my laptop, two binders (paperwork shit in one, newspaper handbook/code of conduct/print schedule/etc in the other), a spiral notebook, three more reporter's notebooks (a moleskine for important/permanent shit, cheap Staples ones for other stuff), a steno pad, a shitton of pens and pencils, cables, chargers, and whatever else, to the office every fucking day. I leave that bag in the office most of the time, though, thankfully.

Working for a shitty college newspaper sucks. I'm a damn editor with a dozen "employees" (who only show up whenever the fuck they want, never put shit in the right format or in the right place on the server, take off with my paper's cameras, which I'm in charge of, and don't show up with them for three days), and I don't even have my own office.

Anyway, sorry for the ranting - any other /p/ fags care to vent about their load?

Why do you carry all that shit?
I carry my camera, 3 lenses max, and maybe a tripod+strobe.

Believe it or not, it all gets used. The 24-85 and the 70-200 are the big workhorses, and the 12-24's usually on the second body if I'm doing sports or other big events. The filters are there because I do a lot of indoor shooting, often under flourescent light in offices, so they're kinda necessary. The two primes are here because I have to cover stage rehearsals and such on a regular basis, and need the fast glass since I can't use flash.

External drive's kinda obvious, as is the card reader. If anybody's puzzled, the reason the tripod plate has a carabiner and a wrist lanyard on it is so I can screw it to the bottom of my sync cable when the flash is on it, and either let it dangle from my wrist when I need to grab something during a shoot, or clip it to myself or the camera strap when I'm walking around.

You have digital bodies, not film ones. Also, aren't those little filter-holder filters cumbersome as fuck to use compared to screw-in ones?

I usually carry my 20D, 17-40(formerly a shitty 18-50 sigma piece of shit), my 100 macro and my shittier than shit plastic 55-200 sigma zoom. I guess one day, if I ever buy anything actually heavy, I might get a dedicated photo backpack, but for now I just put all that stuff in a regular backpack with a hoody and books, if I have any classes later.

No. Only reason for the glasses is that my vision blows, so the big glasses give me corrected peripheral vision when I'm driving, and prevent light from coming in from the side when I'm shooting, which was a real problem when I had smaller prescription sunglasses.

Once I get around to ordering some contacts, I'll probably get some tacticool Oakleys or something, since they fit nice up against a viewfinder, and go under a helmet nicely. (I do trackdays in my car, occasionally.)

I really am considering grabbing a smaller bag, so I can carry less when I feel like it. 300s without battery grip, with the 35 1.8 or the 24-85, one spare lens (I have the cheap 55-200VR, a tele is always useful), and a speedlight sounds like a good combo to me.

My current bag (pictured here) is shit! It's the vidpro camera bag I bought with my kit when i first bought it over a year ago.

I've been looking for something better.

    My current gear:
    30D
18-55mm kit (I'll eventually replace it)
    50mm f/1.8
    Sigma 70-300mm APO macro
    430EX II flash

    I intend to get:
Wide angle zoom to replace my 18-55mm, maybe 2 depending on what I get out of them. I definitely need something to cover the 55-70mm gap.

    What fits in the bag:

    first config:
    Camera body
    kit lens
    50mm lens

    second:
    Flash
    kit lens
    50mm

So I'm paying a bit of attention to what people recommend.

What more do you need than a standard zoom? The equivalents of 18-105 were about all most 35mm photographers had up until the 1950s, when the first superwides started becoming available. Anything they had was longer, and probably not used except for sports, etc. because it was incompatible with rangefinders and reflexes were unpopular until the Nikon F. And because you don't need those for most photography and they usually make your pictures flat in perspective with excessively shallow focus.

Also, lol at this obsession with missing shots or not. This isn't Pokemon; the goal is, over time, to produce an oeuvre that says something true, substantial, and well. Hit rate has shit to do with that.

When I'm just out and about, hanging out (hey that rhymes...) I'll carry 1 body and 1 lens. Usually this is a 5D + 24-105 Combo, hell sometimes when I'm feeling really lazy I'll just slap on a 50 and be done with it.

But when I'm on a paid shoot I usually bring 2 bodies, a 5D and 5D mark II. Lenses are a different story. Depending on what the shoot calls for, I could be bringing between 2 and 8 lenses.

Usually this set-up gets the job done:

    24-105L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 100 Macro.

But other times, like when I have no idea about the location I'm shooting at I'll bring all the rest of my lenses which really starts to pack on the pounds...

    10-20 Sig, 100-400L, 50/1.8, and an 85/1.8

now at this point I'll have in the bag 3 bodies (5Ds and a 50D), 3 Flashes, a set of Flashwaves, 6 sets of AAs, 3 sets of AAAs, Extra Batteries for the cameras, lens cleaning stuff, rocket blower, + all the lenses mentioned above. D: and I forgot to mention, this all gets carried in a sling bag. D: D: D:

I really should get around to buying a Thinktank or something with wheels...

TL;DR - I Bring what is needed to get the shot. (or not :D :D :D)

I do all location work, no studio, and I shoot sitting, kneeling, or in all sorts of weird positions while the model is posing; I move slightly just by breathing. Theres no way in hell i'm going to miss the one beautiful shot because I moved slightly. It also helps me keep my composition and my filter consistent, because things change if you move.

Unless of course i'm on my stomach, in which case I can't use the tripod, I prefer to have the tripod there to make sure i'm consistently in focus. I've developed a small shake even when i'm still, and don't want to risk it.

I used to be the same way; then I started noticing very slight, small movements in some of my pics. I had a shoot where, i got some focused pics, but my favorite was one that I moved on, and unuseable; i started using the tripod after that. Plus, I also *do* do a lot of low light photography; the power plant i've been posting photos of is nearly pitch black. It also allows me to adjust without having to loose my current composition.

I think you are all missing the point. What he means by not carrying another lens and missing a shot is, having a 50 f/1.4 for low light, as well as the walk around. Example, Friday I went to my old junior high and fucked around. I had the 28-135 on one body and 28-105 on the other from earlier in the day.(It is currently 12:30am when we arrive there) I open my bag, I pull out my 50 f/1.4 on the really dark campus and I have a shutter speed of 1/30 instead of 2". So, if you want to argue "just bring a tripod" I will say that the 50mm is much easier to carry that a tripod especially if you are hopping fences and such.

90% of the time all I have with me are my D300, 17-55 2.8, and SB600. If I'm shooting sports, I have my 70-200 instead of my 17-55. So far I've yet to need or desire anything else. Most of my work is PJ type stuff, though, where basically i follow people around and document their adventures (for example, a band in studio or a local politician greeting the commoners).

Awesome thread. I like some of the gear you guys carry and to be honest those bashing as long as the gear gets used and configured to your way for ease of use IMHO.

My digicam is currently in for repair but I use a thermite versi-pak in the leg drop position. I tend to carry light weight and on body.

    http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=19&idcategory=4

    I carry the following:

    -cellphone (outside flap pouch)
    -flashlight (outside flap pouch)
-$10 in small bills, phone card, bus tokens, notes (main outside zip flap)
-2 x pen, 1 x pencil, 1 x highlighter, small notebook, Coghlans Pack II water resistant semi-hard first aid kit (outside small compartment)
    - maps of local area (outside waist zip pocket)

Custom interior with divided sections in the main compartment for:

    - 1 x 8xAA battery holder (which parts down to 2 x 4AA units)
    - Canon S2-IS w/ lens cover
    - 58mm lens adaptor w/macro, UV filter, and lens cover unattached to the S2-IS
    - 1 x 2gb SD card (inside inner sleeve of main compartment)

That serves me quite well for ease of mobility still have the 2gb to hold me over for a while as well as the 8xAA rechargeable cells when I'm out in the field. If I'm in the civies then I just shoulder sling the bag or wear it like I normally do in the leg drop position. I own both the black and digital camo of this bag. I don't get any hassles when using the black bag in leg drop but when I use the camo on in leg drop people seem to notice and are weary.

Anything more and I carry a small backpack.
    >> Anonymous 09/29/09(Tue)02:08 No.548852
OP here again. I mentioned this before, but I'm really sick of carrying so much shit every day, and I'd like to have a smaller bag to carry when I'm going out shooting for fun.

I'd like something that holds maybe two zooms, or a zoom and two primes, something like that, and a flash, plus associated random crap. (Cards, maybe a mini-notepad and a pen, etc.) Some examples of possible loadouts (All include D300 + SB-800.)

    -12-24 + 55-200
    - 24-85 + 55-200
    -12-24 + 35 1.8 + 50 1.8
    -12-24 + 50 1.8 + 55-200

As compact as possible would be best, and if at all possible, the less it looks like a camera bag, the better. I can look through Tamrac, Lowe, etc sites all I want, but /p/'s personal experiences would be a real help. Any thoughts?

I'm the OP of the Thermite Versipak post above you. If you check on www.maxpedition.com and look at the Versi-pak line you can go with something like that and put your kit in there. Does not look like a camera bag and fully function/fit.

Or check out Domke's site. I've seen some camera bags looking like canvas bags.

I also didn't mention that I own a few other camera bags. The Lowe Pro NOVA 9 (I think 9), Lowe Pro convertable backpack/sling (new in bag after 5 yrs of buying it. Never gotten to it as it's large), and the Tamrac Velocity 2 bag.

The Tamrac Velocity 2 is what I use for covering conventions and if I need to carry a little bit more while staying light and if hot weather keep the backpack off my back. Only exception to the backpack is the Deuter Exp. Race Air or Deuter Futura AC 28 which both backpacks feature a mesh suspended back which is a god send in oppressive heat. Tho the Exp. Race Air is what I use more if I backpack light as it's 12+3L.

I use the Tamrac Velocity 3 often. It's flap zipper is good for fast access to some media passes or anything like that. You can quickly unclip the front which is double secure via fastex buckle and velcro (duct tape the velcro if you're in covert missions ie. urban exploring. Mor eon this later) It's compact and confirugable enough to hold my Canon S2-1S in the main slot without the need for the _|_ L side panels to be filled or my Nikon F801 w/35-70mm I believe and the other is 35-200mm IIRC. The sides can hold 2 lenses or one tele lens and the other a 500mL bottle of water insulated by the padding inside the bag.

Front has a open wide drop pocket (unzipped) but that's when you're you need to drop and reload fast to drop your used mem and reload while maintaining eye on ball to stay in the action. Front zip pocket can hold blackberry, PDA, compact batt charger, notebook in those two wide slots with pen pockets or the compartment works for me to hold my Maha C-9000 battery charger analyzer (yes I know it's the size of two compacts but it's my good charger now that I use. Not compact but gives me 2A fast charge if I need it with full digital voltage display so I know accurately the condition of the cells when I reload).

Side has a cellphone/media card pouch and other side a tight pocket only good for tucking pens or you can mod it with a mesh pocket to externalize that bottle water or fast drop pouch. Strap has two horizontal tabs useful for hanging a cellphone with belt clip on it or any army ALICE/molle item that uses those clip or vertical straps.

Becareful when using this bag on steath. We were UEing once before at the MARS center in Toronto while it was still being built as we entered the new half built building to explore we noticed security a few floors down in the open exposed building. Security left and we looked around and if seemed security went back to thier post as I was opening my bag to to change new batteries as mine were low my velcro made a little sound but because we scanned the area and around us security was no where to be found. That was when we had a sinking feeling when we're all within arms reach of each other standing still and hearing a fast sound coming our direction.

If the MARS center wasn't half built we would have been caught but thankfully when we're cornered in a room with what seemed like no escape without seeing the person making that sound then we realized the side of the wall was just heavy plasticed up so we cut the opening and had a 7-8ft jump down into a open gap outside then climbed up the other side to get out. When we're on public property walking away brisky we noticed security running around from up stairs to downstairs looking in our direction before we got away. So anyways.. something ot think about as well if you're in covert/steath situations. Since then I ducttape the velcro under the buckle when on UE's.

How does that laptop handle the bump around withthe rest of the contents in the bag? I'm thinking of a netbook myself for traveling but curious if it can take the shovelling of all the gear in the bag.

These days I carry a Canon EOS 1D Mark IIn with a 24-70mm 2.8 lens and a Canon 7D with a 70-200 2.8 lens (thank you for the early hookup Canon! <3), 2 extra batteries for each and a fuckton of memory cards. Sometimes I rock a 400 on my Mark II but I usually don't unless I'm shooting sports.

What is the big deal? Samy's camera actually had a couple in stock today. They sold out in a couple hours but they did have some. (Southern California)

How the fuck do you pack that in there? I got one of those for my girlfriend as a purse and on/off use it myself when she's not using it. There isn't much room in that bag to begin with. Then again I could be wrong and also not experienced with your camera. I use a canon sd1000 which works in the front pouch for quick access. Can you explain a bit more on how to packed the bag? I'm looking to upgrade soon.

Do you knw if they make semi-hard cases or aluminum netbook hard cases? Semi-hard is preferred.
