When you're out on the field shooting, there's one thing that will make you a true photographer and not just some douchebag with a camera:

    The vest.

Fuck all the brand names on the vest. yes a vest is a VERY useful piece of equipment but unless I'm getting paid for flashing the brand names around by thier companies I prefer a mesh nylon black vest that I've seen on Ebay and online before. Looks semi-tactical but no logos (IIRC) and good airflow. I met someone with such a vest before while I was stealth camping which I bumped into this person while I was making breakfast on the stove. Thankfully it was a good encounter and not a bad one. Just startled by the guy walking in while I was making breakfast. Guy was kind enough to let me try his vest before after we had a little camera chat and I'm still holding out for a similar or same vest when I have time and funds to buy one.

I use an ammo clip belt holster for holding batteries when I shoot video.

I got an old school commando vest from an army disposal shop for like $150aud. The new ones they had were going for over $300AUD! WTF? anyway, i ended up liking the old one better because it was more flexible. All the stuff i put in the pockets fit in snuggly. the new ones are way to stiff and hard to use in real life environments.

I wear my www.maxpedition.com Thermite Versi-pak in the leg drop position while I'm driving and riding to a area I want to phtoshoot. I've had no problems at 95% of the time with the vest and leg drop. Only time I got the cops called on me was when some soccer mom that cut me off after I parked my car and took the bike on the trail/road system and spotted me in the woods taking photos of the the woodland and yelled to her kids 'he's got a gun!!' over and over while running to grab her kids and other people panicked and cops came. After I showed him my long lense with lens attachments and front lens grip on the telephoto sigma 50/500mm the cop told me to use a 'normal' short lens then a long one to avoid issues like this next time. I explained about long distance photography on wildlife and he just shrugged it off. As to the bitch ass soccer mom she kept yelling at the cops why they didn't arrest me with my 'gun' after I waved the camera at her while I was walking away casually giving her the finger while holding the camera on the same hand.

IMHO I'm not really concerned about the vest and such but more what the person is holding and if I can get any positive ID if it's a weapon or camera equipment before making a cop call but this 4eye bitch just made a visual call then freaking afterwards.

Not sure where you're from. I'm from the sandbox area (stationed right now) on contract work with some PMC's. I've had some close calls when someone was shooting at me and people yelling to drop the camera as the assailents must have thought it was a RPG or TOW aimed at them. I don't know where you live but if you're in a hot zone becareful with long lenses.

i really love the professional guys who puts more "effort" out for their stuff then their work.

i often notice a "true professional" guy for local news paper (also one of the biggest one in my countrt) that sometimes are in same conserts then me shooting photos also. He wears a huge bright red vest with "media" over his canon vest and bright yellow "lumberjack style" earplugs. hes really rude. pushes everyone . ignores totally "normal rules" how to behave in conserts and to top that hes photos are ALLWAYS point and shoot guality.

Cheaper to go with army surplus and a box of rite brand black dye or buy some security duty belt gear and put your gear in there. I got to second the other comment here about the maxpedition stuff. Was given a rollypoly (holds 1L bottles or mags or brass/etc) and used that to hold my longer lens or waterbottle and when not in use it folds up and is ready for useo n the belt.

Vests are usefull if you want people to know what your doing (at an event you paid to cover, or at a public event that you want people to assume your ment to be there.. Vest + Gear = walk past 99% of hired-goons and police)

But for day to day shooting, I carry a messenger bag that goes with my everywhere, dosnt look like a camera bag, (unlike that crumpler bullshit), but more than dose the job..

Anything more is just over the top

Crumpler stuff is for the trendy/hipsters. Also where I live downtown is full of bums and some seedy people around. I definately prefer something more covert in a bag or vest without logos so that people are less likely to think you're carrying expensive gear. Then again you've got to balance a bit of the toned down/raggy look on the bag to deter such people with a look stuff able to pull off in the office without raising too many clients eyes that come in and out as your co-workers would know why you carry it as they work with you but clients won't.

I find in my experience no logos help. I was with a friend of mine when we got surrounded by 4 thugs wanting to rob us. My friend was carrying a bag with the words 'Canon' on it but it was only a bag with nothing more then his soldering iron, soldering field kit, a high power LED (1000lumen+) lighting project we're working on, and his netbook inside the bag hidden under a botton compartment.

As always we didn't want any trouble and pocket knife and bat was produced so we complied. They kept asking where the camera was when my friend showed them it was just repair stuff to them which to them was on no value and junk. When they didn't see a camera they got angry and thinking my friend was hiding it on body they started going to him to check if it's on his body. Now I'm 5'1" and featherweight without any martial arts training which is why I was with him. My friend didn't express he was trained in martial arts and played the complying card till they got physical with him and threatened to to rape/harm me. That's when things went fast and next thing I know one guys got a bloodly nose standing, another guys standing not sure what to do. The guy with the knife was on the ground bleeding and the guy with the pipe got knocked unconcious bleeding.

    cont..
    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)18:02 No.545213
    cont..

The other two guys backed off and stumbled away but to make a long story short even tho it seems like it's long it's half the story in the end my friend asked the guy witht he knife who was the one that started the robbery talk why he wanted to rob him and he said he thought he had a expensive professional camera because he knew of canon and nikon names as pro cameras and could get hundreds or thousands of dollars for it which I assumed would feed thier substance abuse addiction. The cops came and my friend used 'self defence' as his cause for the rough take down of the two punks citing he was protecting me as they threatened to harm and rape me. I won't forget that night and what happened. Turned out the punks are 'frequent flyers' and well known to the cops.

Since then I pretty much have covered up all logos. ON a side note for those that air travel the logos also tip off thieves as well to try and distract and take your stuff in the airport. Just be careful out there.

Hatch Ranger Bag IIRC the name is also something to consider. I got pointed this site out to me when I was looking for bags by someone. http://rantmedia.ca/patrolling/episodes-s1.php and watch PATROLLING: S01E10 . Thank goodness for google video and not downloading the whole god damn thing. The whole army motif thing aside (which I found out from the person that gave the link the guys ex-mil) I looked at the videos for thier gear content. I've always found camera people kinda bluring on the tactical side of things as well because they want ot be able to get thier stuff quickly and get that shot without much bag fumble by going inside the bag and such. Some of the stuff mentioned in the video is good and I'll be keeping that in mind while some stuff I don't really need and can save the weight on. I like how it has trama panels. I use a laptop as well as carry a quasi-SLR point and shoot ( Canon S2-IS, not SLR but got pretty much all the full manual goodness and range)

I don't know the Sean Kennedy guy or the person that mentioned his site and videos but just passing on something I've been told that www.dstactical.com will give you some discount if you mention his name. That's all I know. Hey I'll take savings where I can.

dood. have you seen the fucking prices of eagle industries and blackhawk stuff??????? i'd rather use airsoft or knock off brand bags that are copies of that for way cheaper. i've found in my travels that some knock off bag places in thailand if you press enough and pay a little extra coin i managed to get a guy to modify my knock off of the expensive deuter bags with all extra outside velcro pouches, molle connections, cheap d ring loops for keys/stuff, horizontal strips on straps so for cellphone pouches you can slide it on like a belt then have it hang sideways, and some extra stitching so i can mount lights when i buy or rent bikes locally. shit only cost me $10 CDN or like what 7 american? 25-30mins later i got my bag while i waited. ok job but i could reinforce myself a bit more later but for $10 yah i exploited them on thier cheap labor. gettign that customed by deuter would cost you mad coin even at a local tailor shop.

I don't live near a very large city hub, unfortunately, and our local sorry excuse of a city has no place for the sale of knock-off goods.

So I'm quite jealous of all of you who can either travel overseas so easily, or live in or near a place where you can find such things.

Now sure where you live anon but any chinatown or asian area if you hang around and look around you can find what you need. If not I find seeing something you may have little use or a gift for someone then slipping a $5 bill extra asking for a lead to what I want. Most of the time it works. That way I have something of a gift for someone and a purchase established with the store and a little greasing on the request which normally the store owner either givesme a lead or middle mans the items I want for cheap. By cheap I don't mean stolen/hot but knowingly buying knock offs for cheap price compared to the real item.

I find when buying knock offs sometimes the knock off slightly better then the real item in that you may have added features that the real item does not have. Not to mention the cheaper price. Just make sure you check the bag out before paying money for it. At the most you'll get an exchange on the item if you're lucky. Areas to check are stress points, stitching, loose stitching, and don't like put it on a chair and give it a full on body drop pull (like a friend of mine did) just to see if it was durable. You'll get a bad reception over that. A good strong hand pull is a better way of approaching it or hand stretch.
