    108 KB Camera Purchase Anonymous 06/07/09(Sun)22:23 No.448395
"Dear /p/, I'm new to photography and don't know what camera to get. What do you think? Should I choose X, or Y?!"

Go to a camera store and hold the cameras you are considering. Smüsh them up to your face and look through the viewfinders. Push their buttons, flip their switches, etc.

If you are coming to 4chan for photography advice, you probably aren't worried about the nuances in specifications between the two cameras - you just want a DSLR to take nice pictures.

In short, the majority of DSLRs on the market today will satisfy your needs. Your job as a consumer is to pick the camera that feels best to you. We, the /p/ community, cannot do this for you. Thus, since -both- cameras you want will serve your purposes (and thensome), the decision should be based on which camera you like USING more. Do NOT base your decision on which cameras WE use.

tl;dr Want to buy a DSLR? Go to a camera store and try them out.

Mods, for the love of /p/, please sticky this.

I agree. Unless someone comes here looking for something to fit particular needs (to be fair, some n00bs do) then pretty much any camera from the big names, which fits their price bracket and they get along with the best, will see them fine.

People here seem to think once you buy into a system you're fucked, forgetting that they sell lenses all the time, so why not bodies to get into another system, if it caters to them better down the line.

    >> Anonymous 06/08/09(Mon)03:27 No.448589
    >>448587
Depends on how good the refurb is. You can get another million pictures out of a refurb or you can get 10000 and the sensor breaks. It just depends on the camera, who did the job, etc.

If money is tight and you want/need the cam, you might as well. But check it out first. Talk to the original owner if you can, etc.

I actually can't tell how the battery is charged. It says it doesn't come with a power adapter but comes with a battery. Does this mean I have to buy it seperately? Can it charge via USB? Most devices with a built in battery come with a charger...
    >> Anonymous 06/08/09(Mon)04:02 No.448614
    >>448613
It probably needs a charger. Once you get the camera you'll probably have to get a separate charger. See if you can download a PDF of the manual somewhere and find out.

Will any old UV filter be good for protecting the lense?

    >> Anonymous 06/08/09(Mon)04:14 No.448621

I'm not sure. I use a polarizing filter when I shoot outdoors and that works wonderfully.

Although I would say that if you have no glass to begin with and are starting off completely fresh, canon's entry level dslrs are preferable to Nikon's by virtue of the fact that entry level Nikons don't have DoF preview buttons. What the shite is up with that, by the way? An SLR that won't stop down might as well be a rangefinder with a focal plane shutter made out of anvils for fuck's sake. AM I RIGHT LADIES?

Listen to me, for I do not own a DSLR, nor do I know how to shot autofocus.

Also, do Pentax and Olympus entry level dslrs stop down? Or is this something only Canon has actually done right?

At least Pentax K10D & K20D do have depth-of-field preview. You can set it to "digital preview mode" to check DoF & exposure histrogram(s) from the screen before taking a shot or as a traditional optical preview mode (just stops down the lens).

    >>448807

Good to know.. For 135 format, I only have canon FD lenses, so if I were to ever get a dslr, I really have no effective ties to any vendor. I will keep Pentax in mind. Knowing me, I'll probably wait until the EOS 5d mk ii is < $400 before I buy into the craze. For me, it's still cheaper to buy 'roids (fuji instant film) if I want the luxury of insta-preview with my current setup :I

I'm ultimately not interested in printing anything smaller than 20x24". I'm not sure if conventional dslrs provide enough megapickels for that yet (at the resolution to meet my anal standards anyway.) 300dpi is considered the best digital print resolution, correct?

As someone who works in a camera store, I fucking agree with this 100%. So many people come in with their heart set on a camera after reading one or two reviews, then end up coming back the next day because they either don't like it or they've fucked up the settings somehow/don't know what anything does.

    Or all of the above.

Pick the camera that feels best to you. Since -most- cameras you want will serve your purposes (and thensome), the decision should be based on which camera you like USING more. Do NOT base your decision on which cameras WE use.
