    801 KB Steve French !NIQwfIV9fM 03/02/12(Fri)15:00 No.1543177
I post here regularly, but never with a trip or name...I came up with an idea that might be interesting for the boards, so here goes:

Starting this month, I am going to collect user-taken photos posted throughout /p/ that are the best. At the end of each month, I will post a thread with all of the pictures I’ve accumulated.

I am going to judge each image on a variety of elements and be objective as possible, but there is obviously no way for me to totally eliminate myself from the picture (lol). I understand that some of you will not agree with the pictures that are chosen, but I hope that they can at least provide for some interesting discourse.

I am going to try to average around three pictures per day, but I don’t want to have a quota.

I am still in the process of figuring out how this is going to work. If I accumulate enough pictures to do this weekly, then so be it. We’ll figure it out as we go.

I have already started looking at pictures for March. Email in field for questions/concerns.

    okay

neat idea. i doubt if you will get as many solid photos per week as you get trolls per week painting a target on your back until you too quit in disgust. just like the last guy that tried to do anything like this.

but, i laud your efforts to make this place less shitty and wish you the best! props.

Thanks for the support. I've already picked out two images for today.

    Lettuce sea how it goes...
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)16:21 No.1543237
As much as I think it's a neat idea, I don't give a shit about your opinion.
Quite frankly, I already browse this photo board to the best of my abilities and interests. I really don't need some random newfag telling me what he likes - I don't care.

Good luck to you - just know you've come to the wrong house to receive love and support for your preferences.

    >>1543237

i don't think its about his opinion or him judging us, i think its more about him culling out the few actual user-generated photos from the sea of shitposting and gearthreads, to give us a distilled taste of what /p/ is actually (supposedly) about.

i for one welcome the idea of not having to shovel through acres of garbage to find the actual photos sparsely hidden about.

Tried the index thread? especially with the script it's really a pleasure to work with.

    To OP:
Let's see how this works out. Be prepared for a shitstorm and random people complaining that they weren't included.
    >> Steve French !NIQwfIV9fM 03/02/12(Fri)16:56 No.1543248
    >>1543239

This is what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't intend to push my opinion on anybody, just attempt to conglomerate the best that /p/ has to offer in the most objective way possible.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)17:09 No.1543266
OP this is /p/ post your pictures, ignore the random hate ( this place is full of it and thats been proven)... i suspect you know this already!

lets see what you have to offer... im looking forward to it.

Obviously your material could be classified as 'classified'

Get in amongst it if possible, thats what i wanna see!.. i know what a tank looks like!
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)17:10 No.1543267
This will surely end well and not turn into a shitstorm.

But, I do like this idea. Instead of calling it a "best of" thread why not call it a "weekly review" thread? It sounds more pc and won't piss as many people off (maybe)
    >> Steve French !NIQwfIV9fM 03/02/12(Fri)17:32 No.1543298
    >>1543267

That's an interesting idea. I think calling it a weekly review or wrap up is much better than calling it a "best of."

    >>1543177

What background do you have that allows you to critique the photos here other than personal opinion? Are you a photo critic? Have a degree in art history? Anything that separates you from Joe Flickruser?

    Basically, >>1543237
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)18:07 No.1543338
    >>1543313

a background that makes him, alone, willing to slog through oceans of our shit to get to and salvage something worthwhile, no matter how hard we try to bury it when it does appear.

that makes him imminently qualified. stop trying to change the subject, or move the goalposts. critique wasn't even mentioned, asshole.

so rather than doing what you always do - nothing - while shitting on any effort made by others, perhaps you could offer a better solution. or offer to spend hours to slog through /p/ daily yourself.
up for it? no? then stfu, gtfo, and diaf.

i think op in insane to want to do this, but if he wants to more power to him. you just need a dickslap.

I'm all for OP, I would thoroughly enjoy a best of post.

Not sure how familiar you are with his post if you didn't realize he was going to be doing some critiquing.

I have no idea what diaf means.

Sounds like a cool idea. If other people think your choices are shitty they can assemble their own. Personal opinion is what photo critique is all about. Abiding by a set of rules gets so boring.

    A "Best of March 2012"?
    Looks like a nice idea
And a blog or something with all the photos would be great
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)19:35 No.1543420
Sounds like a wonderful idea, go for it
    >> Steve French !NIQwfIV9fM 03/02/12(Fri)19:36 No.1543422
There has to be some sort of judging mechanism in order to pick through everything.

Think of it like this: How many times do you really see a photo on /p/ and say, "Damn. That's a good fucking picture."? For me, it doesn't happen too often. Those are the pictures I want to find.

And if you have a suggestion, feel free to save the image and email it to me; I realize the possibility that I will miss something. Regardless, I believe many of you will see the merit of the images that are chosen.
    >> Chi 03/02/12(Fri)19:43 No.1543429
How will the order of these images be chosen? Will it be arranged in sets with the photographer's intentionality?

I mean, you'll just end up with one off pieces of ephemera.
    >> Steve French !NIQwfIV9fM 03/02/12(Fri)19:54 No.1543436
    >>1543429

There will be two categories: Users with names, and anons - I think it makes sense to recognize images owners outright in cases in which it is possible.

Within the above two categories, images will be ordered randomly, but with short justifications for why they were chosen.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)20:51 No.1543468
You are the hero /p/ needs, but not the one it deserves. I only hope you can put up with the trolls and shitposters that will no doubt try to bring you down week in and week out. I mean, you haven't even started yet and it's begun already.

You even said right in the OP that while true objectivity is impossible, you will try your best. Then you get a bunch of miserable little dick sucks like this guy >>1543313 who just need to shit on everything positive, question your objectivity and say the whole thing is useless if there is even an ounce of personal preference in the images chosen. Well fuck you, guy. Go make yourself useful and assemble a panel of /p/'s best judges. Until then, go strap on a pair of concrete boots and hop in a lake. Oh, and take this guy >>1543237 with you. The last thing this place needs is more negativity.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)20:55 No.1543469
It's rare that I welcome a new tripfag to the board, but you sound like a good egg. Welcome.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)22:30 No.1543510
Proposal accepted. I think anonfags would try to troll the subjectivity of this thread. But it's nice to see some appreciation in this board every now and then.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/12(Fri)22:48 No.1543519
    >>1543468

    0/10.

I don't think anyone minds personal opinion. It's impossible to be completely objective about anything, so personal opinion is going to be in every critique.

But you are missing the elephant in the room. No one cares about Steve French's opinion or critique of their pictures unless Steve French happens to be able to say, with some kind of authority, here's why I chose this picture as "good". Right now, it's just coming out as "here's what Steve French's likes on /p/." If it comes down to "great use of the Rule of Thirds" or "interesting lighting" then Steve French is definitely the hero that /p/ deserves.

Other than that, I wish you the best of luck Mr. French.

    >>1543519
I don't think it matters that it's Steve French's personal opinion - anyone could have taken the same initiative and I would appreciate it. The point is that one person is going to collate a selection of the best photos each month for our viewing pleasure. This selection would change a bit depending on who did it, but it would be *largely* similar, because nobody is going to put babby's first flower macro into a 'best of'.

So the benefit is still apparent; once a month we will have a thread that collates some of the best photos and excludes most of the crap.
