    185 KB /p/ Photo Book - DO IT! BJDrew !!LkyLqEm9G0v 02/27/12(Mon)14:02 No.1538459
    OK /p/
It's time that the world seeing what the internet's greatest /p/hotography board is made of... and to add something to your coffee table.

I am assembling a photo book made of entries entirely from /p/ lurkers, anons, trips, oldfags, newfags and even Alphon.

    1) The book will be sold at cost with no markup. No one makes money on this but the printer. Thinking of 8"x10" Landscape. Lengths based on entries. Shooting for $35.00 so it's affordable

    2) Anyone who submits a photo gets a photo in (unless it's an obvious troll) regardless of experience. This is for everyone.

    3) You get a choice of how you are recognized (anon, name, trip, name + trip) in the book

    4) Will move ahead with a minimum of 20 entries and a max of around 80 pages

    5) Nobody is going to steal your photo, you paranoid freak, you. This is for fun.

Fucking do it. There's a form here where you can upload a photo and your contact information.

    https://cadenzamedia.wufoo.com/forms/m7p8s1/

Go ahead - fucking do it!

What kind of paper will the images be printed on, and what ppi/resolution is ideal? Biggest as poss and 250ppi or something like that?

Sounds like an great idea, I'm all for it. I'm surprised Project never organised a book to be made.

Max of 2 photos per person.

By selecting certain obvious photos to have a full page, etc. there will be enough of a way to include everyone while keeping a few spotlights. I want to keep the curating to a minimum - as I don't have the time to crowdsource it or the eye to be good at it myself.

I was planning on Blurb. 8x10" standard photo book with perhaps the premium lustre paper. A pretty minimalist layout because I'm no designer. Placing the book into their "Market" without a markup.
The volume discount isn't all too great to buy in bulk and sell - and I'd prefer not handing anybody's money.

a setup like blurb that prints depending on where the buyer is would be a good idea to keep costs down in the end. you can even use their own design software to autofill the book with selected shots, just whack in titles/credits and upload. no cost involved.

I'm sorry OP, but this is going to turn out fucking awful. The only value it will have is making some /p/eople happy for being in something and a general sense of community.
That's nice and all, but it'd be a godawful art book, the only people who'd buy it or appreciate it would be people who got in or some extra circlejerky members of the community.

I'm not saying it's because you have to only include the best of the best, but to even give it the chance of not being a steaming pile of shit, you're going to need some standard and you're DEFINITELY going to need curation.

Especially with such the low/nonexistent standard you want, you're going to need to put some thought into the order and format of it.

Just because the photography is a halfassed pile of shit doesn't mean the art book has to be, but if you curate it with the same amateurism that most of the submissions will be, it will even bring down the decent shots.

this book will need some sort of moderation. Do it all yourself and fuck anyone else and what they think of you, if you think the pic is troll or just poor/shit then don't use it. Just be objective. If you start getting into group moderation then it will turn out to be a shitfest and won't get anywhere. that's exactly what happened in the last one. that, and soulr was being a faggot about the whole thing.

Maybe a year ago we developed a "/p/ porfolio". A zip file with works from nearly every trip and a dickload of anons. It worked out great, there were no snags, someone uploaded the zip to mediashare or something, I turned it. Into a torrent, and me and at least 2 dozen others seeded it for quite some time.

I see no reason why you'd think this wouldn't go just as smoothly, especially with the ravishingly handsome BJDrew at the helm.

ok so BJDrew does the first rough selection round to filter trolls and shit, then emails all chosen ones a link to a site where they can rate the pictures which will ultimately decide how large and which page etc they will appear on in order of popularity. the voting page of course requires you to enter you valid email address BJDrew already has so you can only cast a vote once.
after that the results will be mailed to Ken Rockwell who will do the final selection and create the picturebook

Autotune is a better comparison. You're not supposed to hear it - it was originally to correct the pitch of singers' voices undetected. However, one day someone did it wrong and came out with the electronic-sounding voice that is now prevalent in hip-hop. Some people actually like the effect, while anyone with more sophisticated musical tastes thinks it's fucking awful.

This. Probably the best comparison I've read, and you have exactly the same sort of debate raging. Used to very mild effect HDR can bring out details that would otherwise be lost in challenging lighting situations. Used in a heavy-handed manor, you can achieve a very artificial, but possibly desirable, effect. I for one prefer the HDR version of the factory image. But then, I also like the heavy autotune effect in pop music.

There's nothing wrong with vignetting per se. But if you look at a picture and immediately think "wow, they added a bunch of vignetting" then it's too much.

No, it was simple honesty. I enjoy being shocked a bit by what I see in a photograph, and heavy HDR can be used to arrest your attention. I don't expect you to like heavy HDR, just as I wouldn't expect you to like anything else. Hell, you might not like Andy Warhol because he "tried to hard" or "the effect is obvious". Others love his work and collect it as art. There will be people (like you) who will always dislike obviously imposed "effects" such as HDR, cross-processing, etc. That is your opinion, and you are entitled to it. Just don't think that your opinion is ever anything more than just that: opinion.
