beethy has just been featured on Kotaku as "the very best in cosplay".

How does that make you feel, /p/?

Being the best cosplay photographer is like being the best at tying your shoes in your special ed class. But good for him, it's more than 99% of the people that will inevitably be giving him shit in this thread will ever achieve,

Props to him. He was probably the best photographer on /p/. People rag on him because he shoots cosplay but at the end of the day the photos he was turning out, regardless of subject, were pretty amazing, and certainly a fuckton better than anything any of the other studio/people photographers on here.
Also yfw he shot official Borderlands 2 photos with a 1100D

Beethy got good. I think cosplay is meh, but its his subject and he finally got very good. I would say not the best photographer on /p/, there have actually been several better, but like Beethy, as soon as they develop and learn anything they realize how much of a waste of space and misinformation this place is and ditch /p/ really fast. So there have been several, just none now, and none recently, and no one who even looks to have promise currently. That's really the only reason I, almost alone of the old /p/ photographers list, drop in here and some other forums sans trip to scan things periodically - the hope there is something or someone developing some talent. I still hold out hope, just less every monthly visit recently.
Someone please get the fuck on the ball.

    what this guy says

Most cosplay pictures are total garbage. Most cosplayers are ugly whales or neckbeards which ruins the picture from the start.

And I am sure he is not THE BEST. Maybe the best in murrika. Which like I and that anon said isn't hard at all. I have seen enough japanese cosplay photographs that were better made.

After seeing droves of cosplay images, I've started to appreciate Beethy's stuff more. Even if his images do have a lot of photoshop behind it, it definitely gives off it's own style. I've come across some of his images from other parts of the internet and could tell straight away that it was shot by him. Definitely unique when it comes to the saturated market of cosplay photographers, it was a real shame reading about his posts when he was going through some serious shit in terms of financials. (Didn't he end up selling his gear because of it? Forgot.)

Hey guys.. I saw someone from /p/ mention me on the Kotaku thing so I'm dropping in..

Just to address a few things. I sincerely don't recall rage quitting. I just left because some great photographers and people I thought were cool left too. D, DepressedCheesecake.. 5hoe.. etc.
Also the constant negativity was a little off putting to say the least.

Anyway. Just to address a few things.
The shoot wasn't entirely official.. but it was done with the actress of the upcoming release of Borderlands 2.
Gearbox's CEO and their staff seems to enjoy what we've produced so far.
As far as the claims of me selling my gear because of lack of money (gotta get food, etc) .. well that's all true. Things were tough for a while but it's all good now. The 1000D seems to do the job for now.

    Any more questions.. shoot!

Beethy is a rare breed for /p/. I've always been a fan of his work. What you have to understand is this:
He is good at what he does. He is a photographer that can actually use his camera to its potential. Then he is smart; he finds a client base that not many people tap into, one that he loves. Not only that, the client base LOVES to get their photos taken and will pay anything to get a good photo of themselves.

Beethy goes to work doing his favorite hobby, with the people he likes, in an enviroment filled with the things he loves, AND he makes money off of it.

If you don't like him for his work, you have to admit he is doing good for himself.

Can you point me any theoretical and valid art study (preferably done by you and published in some respected magazine or book) regarding this specific theme and how it is not worthwhile? anything that we value has been because it gives us a better understanding of humanity. cosplay gives a better understanding of why japan churns out the same story over and over again with the only variation being in the names and sometimes the hair colors.

"costume" has an "e" at the end. FYI
If originality is being relegated to the background, then yes, there is no originality involved.

Yeah, the cartoons are pretty juvenile and the fans even more so, but that isn't the reason why I don't like it. I don't like it because it's *not original*. If these costumes were professionally crafted, no one would give a shit about what he is doing, and to me that means that beethy's work is lees so about his merit as a photographer and more about showcasing the "talents" of "cosplayers". And that is not a genre, nor is it art. It's a guy with a camera.

Pretty desperate there if you need to pick on spelling and typos. Your posts aren't exactly free of typos either.

Your over-emphasis on originality is pretty amusing, and naive. One can argue that nothing we photograph is original, and at the same time, another can argue that everything we photograph is original. That debate has been done over and over.

How about instead of engaging in some kind of meta-genre pseudo-philosophical argument on /p/, and overthinking the theories of genre and style, you actually did some photography?

Photographers like beethy, regardless of whether they do landscape, fashion, wedding, or cosplay, actually go out and shoot on a regular basis, and by doing so they become better. Your attempts to belittle a sub-genre of photography does not impact on the skills of the photographer.

    > beethy's work is lees so about his merit as a photographer and more about showcasing the "talents" of "cosplayers".
You might have difficulty accepting this, but for most people, photographs are less about the merit of the photographer, and more about the subject. Fashion photography is an accepted genre, and fashion (clothes, bags, shoes) is the primary focus. Secondary is the model and makeup, and coming in last is the actual photography.

As photographers, we mix that order up because immediately we jump on lighting, composition, etc, and we also have problems controlling our ego-centric view that photographic skills should be at the centre of every shoot.

Much as we love the nitty gritty hard reality street-type photography, there's nothing wrong about photos being used to showcase or promote the subject.

Beethy is a disgusting excuse for a "professional" photographer. I may sound butthurt and thats because I honestly am. I paid for a shoot with him and he never delievered any results. He was very rude and unprofessional the whole way through and to be honest after that experience Im not suprised I didnt get any results.

I saw some of Beethy's photos and they are great OP and thanks for bringing that up, faggot. What makes it intriguing for me here is about the "the very best in cosplay" part. Kotaku was not specific about that. Is he the best in Australia? In Asia? In the world? I agree if he's the best in Australia because his cosplay photos are one of the best I've seen in Australia. But for me he's not the very best in the world (sorry Beethy) I've seen much better cosplay photos around the world. I wish you could convince all the people in this world to like your photos but not all have a good taste in cosplay or interested on it. Come on beethy is an inspiration to /p/ to make them interested into cosplay photography.

Yeah I agree with you there. I think there's people out there doing cosplay that are doing a better job than I am.. Mainly some of the people in Russia and China (amazing shit, really)..
However.. these people are more popular in their respective countries than anywhere else.

The amount of good cosplay photographers in the US, Europe and Australia/NZ is kind of sparse.
So far the photogs featured on that site are Eric Ng (Bigwhitebazooka), LJinto and myself. All 3 of us are predominantly only known in western countries.

Also.. enough with Ardella's fake photoshopped picture.

I think it was about the time he posted this shot a few years ago.

He felt very proud that people appreciated his work but some other people commented on it calling him out on it being overblown with a distracting lens flare with the only mildly redeeming factor being that you could see the girls underwear and that overall from a technical perspective it was terrible.

He got agitated and posted some rant about how "/p/ hates hipsters who take pictures of girls" and that "nature photographers are all neckbeard basement dwellers" and his posting rate declined.

It was actually genuinely hard for me to filter out the people who just hated your work because they're jealous and bitter as shit and people who didn't like it for very valid reasons.

Hey Beethy. You're getting trolled again.
You're a cool guy and easily the best photographer to grace /p/ recently. Not to mention you always took people's critique to heart and got all the better for it.

For your sake, kindly leave this thread now. What's happening now is pretty much the exact same thing that caused you to leave.

Insecure douches jealous you're a better photographer than them and so they're trying to dismiss you by going 'lol cosplay isn't real photography'.

This place can be pretty good for critique, just not when you're you because people just troll you into the ground and it's painful to watch.

Also, the board isn't worth returning it as it's gotten pretty shit. There isn't a single decent trip left. Back in the day there were some talented trips, all that's left are a bunch of dickwads with unimaginable egos. The culture of "ignore anons, listen to trips" is still here, but sadly without the reasoning behind it there once was.

How does it make me feel? I don't know, I guess pretty cool that a person featured in an article lurks around /p/. I don't know why a person becomes a weeboo though, my sister almost became one by reading manga all day back then.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/12(Thu)13:58 No.1541862
Wow, I never realized that there are such shitloads of politics and gossip here in /p/.

Moving on, I'd be honest here. Cosplay's not really my type of thing, I just can't relate to it so I'm being quickly deluded by the notion that only the fancy costumes would create the connection (hence, are of significance to the viewer such as me), but I'm pretty sure this is not how it would turn out to be to many people, because I think many people love Beethy's work.

It would be nice if he tried his hand on other types of portrait photography, something that would lean more to my taste (docu, environmental portaits etc), but of course, who am I to force him for what he does not feel like shooting?

I also felt a slight envy towards what the guy so far has accomplished, even if say, I won 1st place at two online photo challenges at DPreview (which some of you would treat as crap photo contests anyway). He is a professional that gets good works every now and then, and many people love him and his works, while I, as a hobbyist, struggles to make a decent enough image to post in my devianthurt, posting only once a month, and now resorting to submitting pics anonymously in /p/ for C&C, just to know if how actual people (fag or non-fag) view my works.

But then again, I'm not a professional, so why would I bother wasting my time (like now) discussing about a well-off fellow photographer whose works don't really interest me?

That reminds me, I have to go out and shoot, bye.

I've been hesitant to weigh in on this one, but I'm going to say some things.

I was a tripfag on /p/ back when Beethy was a noob with a DSLR taking snapshits of whatever, before he was all about cosplay. I am also a cosplay photographer. You wouldn't know my name, but you might know my work if I posted it. I'm probably in the world's top five cosplay photographers in terms of views per individual picture, but those happen on the cosplayers' pages, in publications and blogs that feature them, and being circulated without any info on 2chan and the Chinese- and Korean-speaking message board and blogospheres. I also haven't made a cent doing it.

Beethy, there are two points I'd like to make about your work. First of all, you need to really work on improving your relationship with cosplayers and the cosplay community. I have friends in the Australian scene, and mention of your name does not provoke positive responses. My advice is to stop worrying about your exposure as a photographer, and just be a real part of the community and a real friend of cosplayers. Shoot with them, and don't charge them for it. You'll be amazed at how much you improve when working with somebody who's comfortable with you and who's not just a job you can bang out, deliver, and forget about. By being around them, you'll learn what they want from a photographer and how they want to be portrayed in the photos. I know some girls who are only happy with fashion-y photos that make them look as glamorous as possible, while others want photos with more character and more "edge". Actually knowing these people is the only way to really understand what they like, and what makes the best photos of them.

Photography is also an absolutely terrible way to meet women in the long term, and anything on that front that comes out of it will just degrade your reputation and make you enemies.

    Continued-
    >> Anonymous 03/01/12(Thu)17:55 No.1542101
    >>1542098

Secondly, consistency, consistency, consistency. Being professional is about being able to produce a number of strong photos every time you shoot, not about making the occasional ground-breaking out there original spectacular piece. When people pay you for a shoot and you don't have anything to deliver, there's a major problem. There's still a problem when you do a shoot and deliver two or three photos, and several of them are different framings of the same shot. My advice is to develop a repertoire of "go to" shots, from pose to angle to lighting, and know that out of that repertoire, you'll be able to make six or eight solid shots that fit whatever theme you're working with and that will please the client. Once those are done, then you can start moving the lights, trying new poses, all that, secure in the knowledge that you've got a good set to deliver if the experimental stuff doesn't work out.

This ties back into really getting to know the cosplayers, too, as after a few shoots with somebody, you'll really be able to make them look their best. I know one girl who's not bad looking at all in person, but she has relatively strong features that cause shadows that make her look bad in most people's photos. I've learned how to light and shoot her to make her look the way she does in real life, and that's made my pictures of her very successful. I'm her go-to photographer because I'm able and willing to tailor my lighting and shooting to her individual needs. Knowing how to make people who aren't as fortunate look great is a big deal too - what I'm most proud of, in all my time as a photographer, isn't the book cover or the blog features, it's being told by somebody that her friend, who I shot with, cried when I released the photos of her because they were the first ones anybody had ever taken where she was happy with the way she looked.

Yeah, I really wish people would stop thinking photography is a good way to get laid. I've met some decent women through cosplay (and one great one, my GF), but it was through socialization and friends, not through being a photographer.

I'll put in one more piece of advice that's worked great for me, which is collaborating with somebody else in the course of making your images. I work with an excellent retoucher, and not only do her skills make my photos better, she also acts as a critical second opinion on my photos, who isn't emotionally invested in certain shots like I am, and who can look at the RAWs out of my camera, shoot down the ones that I may have worked hard on but aren't good, and find ones that I wasn't impressed with but which turn out to be some of the most popular.

You don't even know who I am, so that's pretty hard to say.

That said, my work is absolutely average for a professional portrait or commercial photographer, that's true. I could be the best photographer in cosplay, which I'm not, and that still would mean very little compared to "real" work. I was just attempting to establish my credibility as a relatively successful cosplay photographer, not toot my own horn. Sorry if it came off that way.

If you really think you do, send me a message through my website or my flickr or dA whatever and we'll see. Or you could even just say what part of the world you think I'm from and what characters I've had popular pictures of and we'll see if you're anywhere close.

Anyway, look, my pictures are totally run of the mill in the general scheme of photography, and I'm well aware of that. They're not crap but they're on the same level as most people who put a decent amount of effort into learning to light and photograph competently. Pictures I've taken have been very popular and a few have had a huge amount of play on the internet, which is something I attribute more to the quality of the cosplayers than to my photography, but it doesn't change the fact they've done well and that the people I shoot with like the photos.

I don't think I'm a very good photographer but I think I do some of the better work in the cosplay scene, although I'm realistic and humble enough about it that I'd only ever say something like that under cover of anonymity.

Oh, and by "views per individual picture", I meant that I have a few pictures that have had a large circulation. I realize that it sounded like I was saying every one of my pictures gets more views than anybody else, and if you're basing who you think I am on that, you're definitely off, because the vast majority of my work only gets a few dozen or hundred at the most, especially when they're my own posts of them.
