Official press release was leaked by some Brazillian site, but they seem to have taken it all down now. Pictures still up on NR.

I resent the fact that the only upgrade path for D700 owners who want video is either £5000 or Canon.

Not that it really matters, but damn that's an ugly camera. The D3/D700 were pretty well proportioned, this just looks like its been squashed.

people apparently like the small size of nikons over the eos models. I myself find it difficult to hang on to a nikon but since getting my D40 I've gotten used to it. I still like the way the 7D fills my hand more tho.

Pricing hinted at $3000/$3300 for the D800/E respectively.
(E is the model without the AA filter).
Cheaper than I was expecting, but it makes sense that it wouldn't be too much more expensive than the D700 currently is.

Also, why charge more for one without an AA filter? Is it simply because it's a niche product so they can charge more, or will they have to do extra things to it other than just removing it.

    Some main points:
    USB 3
    4fps FX, 6 DX
Uncompressed HD signal directly off the camera for an HDMI output (8 bit, 4:2:2)
1080 and HD 720 30/24p to 60p. By using the method of data compression B-Frame, the user can record video in H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC (anyone give an insight into the difference between the two types?)
    100% VF
    Shutter rated at 200,000
    CF+SD slots.

AF in the photo, as it didn't translate too well.

    >> Anonymous 02/06/12(Mon)21:34 No.1513757
    >>1513731

H.264 is just a type of compression, it's like the JPEG of video.

The interesting part of the D800 is the ability to shoot in uncompressed video with 4:2:2 pulldown (which means the image is retaining a lot of information that would otherwise be destroyed in a compressed (H.264) format, basically a lighter video version of RAW)

It'll be interesting if the 5DX has this feature, if not then the D800 could take over the pro HDSLR market.
    >> Anonymous 02/06/12(Mon)21:37 No.1513760
    >>1513757
I don't think it can actually shoot in uncompressed, it just has the option to send it out via the HDMI. I think they had a similar thing with the D4, the clean output being one of the big things they were shouting about.

To invalidate a camera based on the fact it doesn't have features you personally needs is fucking retarded. You hardly need a D90, let alone a D800. Someone who wants full frame video, or a professional studio photographer on the other hand, will need all this crap. Christ, for someone older you'd think you have a bit more sense about you.
    >>1513790
Probably gonna suffer. Although in theory the pixel pitch is lower than that on a D7k, so I imagine it will sit somewhere between the D7k and the D700 in terms of noise performance. Not great, but I guess if they released a mini D4 that would just eat into those sales, like the D700/5DII invariably did for their D3/1DsIII.

i have lights & i use them when needed.
i don't expect i'll ever be shooting by candlelight.

my next upgrade will probably be the D3 - not S or X - just D3.

    >> Anonymous 02/06/12(Mon)22:58 No.1513815
In terms of video, the D4 has a 2.7 pixel matched crop mode which allows you to shoot 1080 with no pixel/line binning (I'm unfamiliar with video, so these are terms I'm probably using wrongly/not even correct terms).
Does that bring any benifit to the actually video quality? I think I read somewhere that moire is made worse by the line skipping that goes on when using the whole sensor, does that mean the D800 would need a ~3.8x crop to achieve this?

    >>1513813
    >so why is there a thread about it every 2 days?
Because it's being announced in the next few hours. Because it's a camera and this is a photography forum. Cameras facilitate photographs. Lots of people here have D700/5DIIs (so some of the Nikon people are likely to buy one).
Remember, it's only you who doesn't need it. Some of us actually leave our little offices and take photos of things other than alcohol.
    You≠everyone else.
Thank God, otherwise /p/ would be filled with pity/drunk threads rather than gear/photo threads.

Dude really? It's not even that. It's just ugly. Remember when this piece of shit came out? It's the Pontiac Aztec. A completely original design that I'm sure GM stockholders collectively shit themselves when they saw it.

The K-01 is ugly because it's a retro-design that doesn't look retro (well, at least the yellow one, the others look okay color-wise), and that the mode dial is completely out of place looking on the camera. It's like, they forgot to put it there, and then, instead of incorporating in logically, they were all like, "Let's take a design cue from 'Star Wars' and make a bulge where we could put it like the Mon Calamari fish people ships! That will appeal to people!"

I could care less about the whole flange-focal distance debacle, and it'd be a good looking camera with the mode re-integrated or removed.

yeah dude, still me, I just don't bother with a tripcode anymore.

I basically got help from NPS (Nikon Professional Services) to secure me one. If you're elgibile, even for the light service I HIGHLY recommend becoming a member.

I haven't had to give money yet, and the retailer is someone who i purchased my two D700s from. The NPS part was to simply assure that I would get one from them. So i'm kinda helping my retailer out too... even if they are the grumpiest old men on the planet ahha.

I have it on good word that the D800 is everything it promises to be, that word came from a Nikon Ambassador who I met at PMA and stayed in touch with.

They are not that anal about fact checking.

Noise level is apparently on par with D3s, but because I didn't ask if that was native or scaled down from 36mp.

I just liking having the choice to step down a bit, I do a fair bit of print work now and the 36MP helps. But I more likely than not will be shooting most other things at a lower res

Of course that's not so much the case with this as you need more memory cards, but when I can fit 1000+ photos on my 8GB card I won't hesitate on taking some extras.

They're all clumped up in the middle 1/4 of the image, because Nikon is too lazy to make different AF modules for their crop and FF cameras.

    >I read they have a 1.2 crop, with 1fps more which would utilise a lot more of the points over the frame.

Ah. I only ever use MF lenses, and on the rare occasion I shove an AF on my D700 I only ever use the middle few points.
The video in the D800 sounds kinda shitty in that for full 1080, it only uses 91% of the frame (width wise)
    >> Anonymous 02/07/12(Tue)02:15 No.1513996
    >>1513990

You wouldn't, but you would use a 1.2 crop for a lot faster writes and a bit more throw to the lens so you can use a fast zoom without it being the size of a bazooka.
I for one always liked the idea of Canons 1.3 crop more than FF for action shots, you can use the next size smaller and lighter of zoom and get a lot faster burst.
and inb4 the whole 'b-b-b-b-b-but better IQ" whining, i will remind you that its still impossible to compare the IQ of a shot you missed entirely, in this case due to slow burst speed or attempting to hump around and/or aim an extra 5 pounds of lens.

    D800 original MSRP: $3000

    5D2 original MSRP: $2800
5D3 original MSRP: probably similar to the 5D2's unless the 5D3 is just as good as the D800 in which case they'll go $3000

Seriously, Canon is going to have either to bring their A-game or undercut Nikon. Nikon's going with good AF, high MP, and most likely good ISO performance. Canon got away with it last time because Nikon had a much lower MP body. I want to believe they won't pull another 60D but that's not guaranteed.

Great video. Add in cast, crew, including 2 camera operators, steadicam, etc, cost of the D800 would have been a minuscule part of the budget but Nikon probably paid for it all. Still, looks like they've remembered the now burgeoning H-DSLR market they opened up with the D90. A serious contender for the 5D X. Will be very interesting to see what Canon come up with.
