canon and nikon have more selection in the DSLR sector, and back when I got into DSLRs there was not much reason to chose sony/minolta unless you already had a lot of gear for that system.

The sony a850 with some of that Zeiss glass looks pretty damn sweet. If I were starting out today that's probably what I'd get, but I'm more than happy with my D700 setup.

Sonyfag here, I'm not sure what all the complains are about ergonomics, but then again, I have freakishly small hands. All the Canikons I've held physically hurt to use.

The 900 is by far the best camera I've ever had the pleasure to play with (ergonomics, features, ease of use, the lot). Blows the 5DMkII out of the water (but it's really a 1D competitor). The 850 is almost as good (finder's not as good). Sony and Zeiss glass are at least as good as Cannon/Nikkor.
A lot of pros shoot canikon because:

I say it's better than the 5D, not than the 1D (or d3). It's a "1D competitor" in the sense that it's Sony's highest offering. It's worth noting that it's a good deal cheaper than the 1D or the D3 (like, only a tad over half the price, in my neck of the woods. You can get a LOT of glass for these $2000)

IQ aside, the a900 has the best OVF of any small format camera on the market. Even better than the 1D's, if you look in it.
