The only difference is the cropped off row of lights on the top btw. I know it's a really small difference, but it's huge in my eyes. I don't really like to crop, so I'm partial to the first. I also like the aspect ratio of the first, it seems to have better flow.

However, when I look at the second one, I feel like the first one looks dead on the top. I don't realize this unless I look at the second one, but once I saw it I can't unsee it.

Thanks, it's HP5 shot at 400 and developed in Ilfotec HC. Can't remember if I was using a red or yellow filter at the time of exposure, I'd guess yellow.

Bump for a few more opinions maybe?
    >> Anonymous 10/14/10(Thu)20:36 No.1034112
These variations are so subtle, that they won't have any effect on anyone who has not stared at the picture for hours. To a new viewer, they are both the same image; +-0.

But If i had to choose, I'd take the first one because I like the dark "frame". Or maybe I'd crop it into 1:1 or even into horizontal if the resolution allows that.
    >> flog !MhyCuJ0fTo 10/14/10(Thu)20:45 No.1034121
Second one is a bad crop. But the dead lights in the foreground of #1 really catch the eye and disrupt the dynamics. Try to crop better...
Maybe make it a standard 2/3 format by cutting some of the bottom space? IDK, try stuff. But keep those dead lights out of the foreground, they really stop the eye.

    >>1034121
Like I said I never crop, so I'm not very good at it. Feel free to have a go at it, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me something better.

    >>1034112
I had entertained the thought, but it's high speed 35mm film, cropping it into a horizontal makes it look too grainy. Might look decent as a print, but not for the web.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/10(Thu)20:48 No.1034125
    first one

but not really that big a difference
    >> Anonymous 10/14/10(Thu)20:49 No.1034127
the first one, but yeah, it's a really minor difference. i think the first one brings the runners (very) slightly closer to the foreground, which is rather barren (in a bad way). Chopping off the top is the wrong way to go here in my opinion.

also, you must be shuttermaki. i like your daily pictures.

It's always nice to meet a fan, thanks. I did one crop that chopped off the empty bottom but that one threw off the whole composition. I may just have to go back to this location and wait for a closer subject.

Well, now that the cat's out of the bag I may as well give up my photo site. I have a daily photo blog up at www.shuttermaki.com, and I also have a flickr that really only gets the best of the best, mostly focusing on street. I'd recommend checking that out first here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23530296@N04/ and then if you still wanna check out more you can browse through my archives on the site. I've been doing daily updates for about a year now so there's quite a bit to sift through, but I do have a decent tag system so you can categorize them pretty well.

You seem to be a bostonfag. As a fellow bostonfag, I'm mildly curious as to where you shot this, if you did actually shoot it in boston.

I shot this at the Harvard Square Red Line station, I was going outbound to Alewife but I'm pretty sure this was right off the main atrium at the bottom of the stairs.

Do you shoot a lot in Boston too?

I moved to boston recently (from worcester). I've shot some in the city, but I haven't been too happy with my results. I mostly shoot people/candid portraits i guess, not so much 'street'.

    anyway http://www.flickr.com/photos/quotient/ is me

do you shoot only in the boston area or do you get around? I haven't seen many bostonians on here lately, not to my knowledge anyways. :\

    Oh I get around..

But seriously, I don't post a lot of my stuff here, only when I have questions like this or I had a particularly unsuccessful shoot and want some C&C on my subpar crap. I made a post about a week ago asking for a critique on a few shitty shots I took. This barista shot was the only one I liked that I took, not sure if you remember the post.

clearly you should post more of your stuff to help break up the "lets talk about HDR" threads that are always on the front page.

I used to post more of my stuff, and I got some pretty good critiques for a while, but lately most of my photo threads don't get a whole lot of attention and end up on page 15 for some reason. I just spent the weekend in the white mountains shooting some foliage on 120 Ektar and 35mm chromes, so when I get those back from the lab I'll make a thread.

And yea, I've been to Philly. Aside from a few cool things like architecture and being able to park in the middle of the street it's a pretty big shithole. Nice place to shoot, but I wouldn't want to live there.

    >how can you like philly?
I love Chicago and I don't like Philly. I tend to dislike Philly less than I dislike Boston, though. At least Philly isn't ENTIRELY fake (go to the non-fake parts and you might be mugged and/or shot, but at least it's lively).
