That's the blackhawk tatang, it's good as a knife, shovel, and hatchet (i've used it for all three)

Comes standard black, I krylon'd mine.
tough, two edges, serrations are an option, and it's about 70 bucks, if you didn't want to drop 400 on a tool (I didn't)

Good tool steel, hold a helluva edge.

Les Stroud actually does survivalist shit. Bear Grylls does some of the stupidest, most dangerous shit imaginable, like traveling UNDER glaciers, or jumping INTO cold mountain rivers, or drinking untreated water in the rain forest. Neither show is really intended to teach survivalism, but I think anybody who knows even the least bit about managing risks in the woods would prefer Les' show, but if you just want mindless entertainment, Bear's show is adequate.

Basically, this: >>4118
>>
>>7847
Maybe, but I think Bear has superior genetics and could fuck like a champion.
>>
>>7547
>Arctic episode
>All three are dropped at the northern edge of the vast Siberian forest with minimal kit and a handheld camera
>Must survive in the forest, as a group, for one week then make their way to the nearest settlement on the open tundra
>Bear and Les hunt, fish and trap like crazy to make provisions for the trip
>Ray gathering dem wild berries and crafting cross-country skis for the three of them with nothing but an axe and draw knife
>They set off into the wastes relying entirely on what they've gathered and made to get them there

Tell me you wouldn't watch the shit out of that show. Ray would be like the jolly uncle making the camp cozy as fuck while Les and Bear competed constantly and did all the hardcore shit.
>>
How many bears would Bear Grylls grill, if Bear Grylls could grill bears?

I've got a flower question for my fellow southernbros. Every year around April here in Georgia the woods and sides of the roads begin to absolutely erupt in those purple hanging flower vines. I would love to know what exactly they are called. They have taken over the magnolia, oak, and sweetgum trees around my home, and if possible I want to try managing them into surrounding the area around my home.

They have a slightly sweet/musky odor to them, and usually come together in massive clumps of the vines. They droop down in a cluster shape. I know we have them here in Georgia, Alabama, and in northern Florida, but other than that I don't know how far their range is.

Pic is obviously unrelated.

Nah, I didn't start to learn things until my late years of high school, and I'm still learning.

Well, socially, that is. I learned a lot about the outdoors at Philmont, and really just kinda broadened my experiences overall.
>>
I was a scout in Florida. Fucking loved it, all the outdoors shit and all that.

We went up to Camp La-No-Che every year for like a week or two with our troop. My father was one of the scout leaders and he, my mother, and I would do up the campground haunted house every october.

Shit was so fun.

This seems like a redundant board to me, but I can see some of it's point. Anyway, let me head something off right now. It seems too me like this board may become just a hippie environazi extreme liberal circle jerk unless something is done on at least a few points.

First of all, IOT to prevent much argument the title of this thread must be ironed out right now. Weapons in the outdoors. IF YOU DON'T CARRY AT LEAST ONE WEAPON FOR SELF DEFENSE YOU ARE A COMPLETE RETARD. The outdoors are isolated, you cannot call for help. Other people with bad intent know this. Animals of course can be dangerous too, though generally less of a danger than other people in isolation. Animal out there often just run away, people don't and you'll have to deal with them. (ironically, I only have problems with dangerous wild animals in civilization and more problems with dangerous people in the outdoors, kinda makes sense I guess)

Anyone who does not think that a weapon is necessary is a fucking moron and shouldn't voice their retardation otherwise this board will be shit. I don't mean lugging a rifle with you backpacking, but a small pistol or a large knife is cheap insurance.

>in b4 mah country is cibilized!!! (people are people, and in isolation the police [who don't actually protect anyway] are hours to days away)
>in b4 what r u 'fraid ub!!! (I'm not, but you're sticking your faggot head in the sand)
>in b4 ib never had a prollem!! (well, you must be rather lucky or are EXTREMELY inexperienced in the outdoors)
>in b4 any other retarded 'argument' based on logical fallacies and retardation

tl;dr: if you want to tell people how guns are evil or how weapons are totally unnecessary, take it to /k/ or /pol/. On /out/ weapons in the outdoors should be an accepted piece of kit because they just make sense, like a stove or a sleeping pad.

Taking care of your feet is extremely important. If your feet hurt, everything hurts. Also you can put a large clean sock into the mouth of your water bottle, fill it with charcoal and use it as a kind of "pre-filter" if you need to get water from a creek/stream before boiling/sanitizing it

Another fun way to ignite charcloth is to build a birch cone. Essentially you just have to peel one relatively large swath of birch bark and a few tinier swathes.
After that peel the bark from the minor swathes as thin as you can possibly make them, then wrap all of the tinder you just created in the larger swathe and voila.
Then catch a spark on your charcloth and gently place it in the birch cone and begin feeding it oxygen by blowing on it. After the tinder catches the cone will ignite.
>>
>>7951

good info.

I'd add to that, wrap a couple of feet of ducttape around a pen or something and take that with you. as soon as you feel a spot where a blister is developing, stop and cover that area up with the ducttape on your skin. It's like hobo moleskin.

Not green texting cause its a pain to do on a phone.

Playing air soft one of my high school summers. It was at a friends house who has 23 acres, much of it wooded. Running along the edge of his property to a new position. All of a sudden get caught up in barbed wire and trip. Pants get cut up and I'm all stuck in the shit. Call for help. Get shot.
>Mfw

My friend told me that the owner of the property put it up forever ago for some stupid reason, and only bits and pieces of it were still hidden around in the brush.
