Time for my trip to finally begin! The luggage is loaded, the route is planned, all systems are in place, the weather is beautiful, my leg and neck are fucked and I have a headache, but other than that I feel quite good. Time to hit the open road (inb4 jokes about actually hitting the road).

See you in Arizona, /o/.

Anyone familiar with Buells? I've been looking for an XB12S, but there aren't any for sale in my area. However, I did come across one if the older tube-framed Lightnings for about half as much as I was planning in spending on an XB. Now the question is, is the difference between the two bikes dramatic enough to continue searching for an XB, or should I just buy the older model?

I asked this in the last thread but didn't get a response:
Looking for a used dual sport/adventure touring(4 stroke would be nice) as my starter bike, what models should I look for? It doesn't need a lot of off-road capability, just enough to ride on unpaved roads. Something that can handle highway speeds would be nice but I know I can't get everything I want in a cheaper used bike. I'm 5'7" so I'm guessing I need to avoid taller models bikes. Also, I someone mention "waiting for riding season to be over" before buying a bike, is there really much price drop? I'm in the Pacific NW if that matters.

I've ridden an XB12 and liked it. I know it has an loltractor engine, but I'm looking for a comfortable sit-up bike with decent low-end torque. What I'm really asking is if the XB is significantly improved over the older models.

>>6373671
Both the XB12 and older Lightning I'm looking at use the same 1203cc engine and both make the same power. The only difference (as far as I know) is that the XB is fuel-injected, and has a smoother transmission.

>>6373642

Anons, I want to buy my first motorcycle and I have a hard time deciding which one: SV650 or GS500.

SV650 is my dream bike (99-02 models). I can pay for it 1700$ - no more. In my country you can buy this bike for that price (even for 1500$ and it looks good). I worry though about it's condition.

GS500 is not my dream bike - I think it's quite good looking. I can pay for it less than 1000$ but it will be old (~1992). It will be cheap to maintain, but can be terribly worn (this bike is recently bought by begginers).

And someone in previous thread said than you must buy 250cc bike to be "proffesional" - really? Is that true?

Ok, thx for reading. I hope you can help me with that decision.

Cheers
>>
>>6374451
You don't have to worry about the 250 thing.

Neither of those bikes you mentioned are sportsbikes. 250 only applies if you plan on getting an inline 4 600cc+ bike.

Are there any Chinese bikes that are decent?

Mind you, it's not me that's getting one, it's a friend of mine. I've tried to talk him out of it, but he's adamant about buying one because it's affordable (in fact, the dealer offered him a lower price) and because "the reviews are good".

I'm not sure what model it is, because when I asked my friend what make (Lifan, Benzhou, Shineray, etc.) or model it was, he said he didn't know. I think that in itself is a pretty huge red flag. All I've got from him is that it's "a 250cc dualsport".

There's no helping him, but I have my own curiosities here. Am I actually wrong about Chinese bikes? Apparently some people are saying good things about them, so am I uninformed? Are there actually any good ones?

so unless its a clone, and you can go to the kawasaki dealer and get parts from its clone, then its a terrible idea.
whats he going to do in a couple years when the fork seals leak and the company is gone?
>>
>>6373620

I have an XB9 Lightning. They're much improved over the older models, which are plagued with reliability issues. I have no problem with the power, but its worth noting that most owners have sprung for the XB12 over it. Performance is the same, due to the 12 having noticeably higher gear ratios.

Ride one before you decide, they can handle quirky if they aren't set up for your weight, but they will destroy when you do so. I can keep up with 600cc supersports on the track despite how down I am on power.
>>
>>6374627
Chinese bikes aren't bad. A lot of people still think they are, because 5 years ago they were, or they've got an irrational hatred of China. A lot of the Jap firms make most of their low displacement models in China now, and unless you buy the cheapest of the cheap, apart from the chrome the quality will be exactly the same.
>>
>>6374463

Well, in the future I plan getting sportbike but not now. Seriously, I don't get it. If your first bike will be sv650 you can never be a good racing rider?
>>
>>6374550

if your first bike is an sv650(period) chances are you won't turn out to be quite as skilled as someone who started on a 250. if you do chances are you'll reach that skill level faster starting on a 250. a smaller displacement bike will allow you to learn technique faster than a bigger bike. bigger bikes tend to intimidate newer riders who find it hard to get over the power delivery and much higher likelihood that they'll toss you off if you make a slight mistake while cranked over in a corner.

there's a reason the more civilized countries in this world impose a displacement or horsepower limit on motorcycle for those just starting out. there's also a reason pretty much every GP rider out there started their careers on 125s(or smaller)

street, track, doesn't matter. the 250(or a 500) is the superior beginner bike.

>A lot of the Jap firms make most of their low displacement models in China now, and unless you buy the cheapest of the cheap, apart from the chrome the quality will be exactly the same.

Japanese, and other firms who own factories in China have good QC and support. The quality is not the same, it can be the same if a company bothers to try making a name for itself, or at least slightly better than crap (Hyosung from Korea, Buddy from Taiwan). But then it usually isn't much cheaper.

People buy and sell Chinese bikes because they are cheaper, and therefore they buy and sell the cheap ones, which is why nearly all Chinese motorcycles sold are bad.

There is no reason to but some unknown Chinese brand because chances are they suck. If they're almost the same price you should just buy something reliable and Japanese.
>>
>>6374745

Ok, thanks for explanation. I understand now.
Well, I think I have to decide which one will be better. I'm just afraid that gs500 for 1000$ will be so crappy (condition I mean) that it will be nightmare.

they're great around the track. I've seen many a 250R pass liter bikes on the track in beginner and to a lesser extent intermediate. by the time you get to expert guys really know what they're doing and the 250 doesn't stand a chance, but that's not because it has lower corner speeds, it's because they can't get close enough to pass on the brakes or mid corner after a straight.

>take them up a notch with some ContiSportAttack or similar rubber.

or some REAL tires. Dunlop makes a DOT race tire specifically for the 250R
>>

My next tire order.

USA front and two soft UK NTec rears. They're soft, but slicks last much longer than DOTs because one of the leading factors in tire wear is actually the tread. The less tread, the better the wear.

Plus there's two of them. Nothing like a new set of sexy, sticky rubber to throw on.

Fronts last FOR FUCKING EVER, especially at Jennings. I have two track days on my current D209 GP-A front(medium) and it still probably has three left in it. By contrast the rear D211 GP-A has maybe another half day left.

>>
>>6374826

Take the rear straight at TWS. Its a pretty fast track, and i'd top my bike out at 135, while the 600s were probably doing 150. But I could outbreak them, and you're all basically going to be carrying similar speed through the corners, so if you've got the balls, its certainly possible.
>>
>>6374856
expert 250 riders usually ride in intermediate, intermediate riders stay in beginner usually.

You have to realize closing speeds get dangerous when you're talking about a 250R topping out at 110mph on the back straight at Jennings GP where I have seen 155 on my speedo and the really fast guys get to 160+.

I've also seen true beginners on 250s pass guys on 600s in the corners. My buddy got passed 3 or 4 times by 250s the first time I was out there with him.

I swear I'm never riding in beginner again though. I ran a session with the same guy in beginner last track day. Fucking agonizingly slow. My personal best is 20+ seconds faster than his.

He's not in this video, but this is what I'm talking about.

Just arrived in Phoenix! Holy hell, I forgot how hot it gets here. Was going to try to make it to flagstaff but I figure if I get up North before around 11am tomorrow I'll beat the heat. Also, my left leg/ankle/foot is hurting like fuck. Time to down some advil. It was 112 when I rode into Phoenix. I must say, I forgot just how fucking awesome this city is though. I still vaguely know my way around- at least on the interstates. Love this city! I'm currently checked into a bitchin fancy hotel near some mall.

Thanks for the support from all those giving such, I appreciate it kindly. There were no blackouts, but I got kind of dizzy and woozy otw from Blythe to Phoenix. This was fixed by an hour stop at a subway and a delicious sammich. I can also attest that if I didn't have this camelback full of water in my tank bag I would have had a heat stroke or worse. Keep hydrated out there when riding cross country, especially in the desert.

>>6373524

That's how my legs feel right now. I must say, the worst part of riding a supersport cross country is your legs and the seat made out of about 1/4th an inch of foam.

>>6373642

I did respond in the last thread. Finding a 4 stroke dual sport is going to be hard. Try looking into a single cylinder, maybe a GS650 or KLR250.

>>6374451

Again, depends on your size, but you should be okay if you find an alright deal on an SV650, as long as you aren't tiny.

>>6374465

Lookin' bad ass there. Do like.

>>6374466

You could learn on a 696, but be very careful, it's got a lot more torque than your average 250. It's super light, pretty low seat height and isn't going to get you in too much trouble.

No, none. Do not purchase. Ever. Not even once. Not even if you're Chinese and live in China.

>>6374653

Being made in China =/= Chinese Brand. I'm serious, I've been around the things. You don't want them. Korean is fine, like Hyosung, but Chinese is not so much.

>>6374745

I gotta agree. I was looking at their personal situation, but to be honest if he/she wants to become a more skillful rider they should do as FZR1k is suggesting. A 650 would work, but a 250/500 would be better for developing proper riding skills.

>>6374770

This.

>>6374867

I was 7 years old. I won it from a raffle at a bakery. My family was dirt poor.

Also.

This is some where between Blythe and Phoenix Arizona.

To whichever anon put the hit out on me to the truck drivers, they were listening. Two deliberately tried to end my life on the way to Phoenix. One so deliberately I got a tank slapper just from avoiding him and having to hit the shoulder. It was no accident.

Challenge still accepted. Bring it on.

>>6375294

Aww, I love you too, Anon.

So, I would like to report that there were no black outs, a bit of heat exhaustion for certain though. Got really sleepy and dizzy a few times but was able to rid myself of it thanks to my camelback and thanks to the fact that- even in the middle of no where in the desert, there's always a nice cool air conditioned subway nearby. If it weren't for subway I would have died a long time ago, and certainly on this trip.

Gotta say when you pull into a small town in the desert, dressed like I am, with California plates, on what I'm on, walk inside, pretty much undress from everything but your T-shirt, socks and pants and plop out your laptop beside all your gear, people stare... They stare and they question you. A young man asked me if I was a superhero, an older man asked me if I was a storm trooper and a girl asked me if she could touch my mohawk. Good times.

>Doing 150 through Phoenix.

Forgot how awesome the roads here were. So wide and perfectly paved and painted. California needs to learn some lessons on road building and maintaining from Arizona.

New rider here.

What's the go with leaving your helmet with your bike? Does anyone do it/ever had one taken? Is it worth getting one of those helmet chains if I want to leave my helmet with my bike?
>>
>>6375563
Most bikes come with some form of helmet lock.
>>
>>6375247
Welcome to Phoenix.

I would take a ride with you but I only have about 20 miles logged on my new bike. Just began riding a few days ago.

Enjoy Phoenix, plenty of good Mexican food places.
>>
>>6375563
pick up a $5 cable combolock from target or walmart... in sketchy areas, loop the cable through the helmet chin (not the strap)... and you can run it through your jacket sleeve too. It keeps the faggot kids from taking something "just because". No pro thief wants your nasty, smelly helmet anyhow.
>>
>>6375608
Mexican thieves do.
>>
>>6375424

Gotta love them power wheelies.

>>6375534

Sad but true, although still... There's a good bit of traffic here in Phoenix.

>>6375563

There are helmet lock systems you can buy, but most of the time if you're just stepping into a place for a bit, or to eat, and it's not a terrible area, no one is going to fuck with your helmet. If you're going to be longer, you probably don't want it outside that long getting weather beaten anyways.

>>6375593

Oh wow neato! What kind of bike? Welcome to Motorcycling, and thank you. It's good to be back in Phoenix. Been here many times before and lived here when I was a kid. Such a great place.

I'm going to go in search of an epic restaurant right now, maybe see a few sights while I'm at it.

yep, lots of times i have shifted down to 3rd to pass someone, and had the front come up at about 70.

the michelin road pilot 2 i put on my motard is very different than the conti i was running.
less grip, but much better feel. more fun at the limit, because it slides easier and less abruptly.
just a better breakaway feel. more relaxing.
and the hard compound means i can rape it and not have to change it asap. however it would make a piss poor track tyre.
>>
>>6375563
Honestly, I would still strongly advise taking your helmet with you when you're off the bike.

Theft isn't even the issue. Vandalism is.

Some shithead could smash your helmet while you're gone, rendering it unusable. Not very good for your safety, now is it?

Another thing they could do is piss in your helmet. Unbelievably dick move, but it can happen, and you're not gonna have a good time.

Hell, the damage doesn't even have be from humans. A seagull or pigeon could just as easily shit on/in your helmet.

Yay, more pictures! Greetings, from Phoenix!

>>6375936

Bout a month back, as I was sitting on my bike putting my gloves on, helmet already on, getting ready to go, a seagull flies by and shits right onto my mirror. No lie. I just sat there and stared at it for a minute before driving off and silently saying "fuck."

>>6376035

I ended up breaking down and doing what I always do. Eating cheap Indian food in the mall, which brings me to my next story!

>Walk into mall on Saturday night in Suburbia.
>Full on Dainese Race Suit + Helmet with a Mohawk in my right hand.
>People staring me down hardcore...
>...Not the good kind of stares, but the "What in all of the fucks is that guy." kind of stares.
>Laugh for a bit... It's not funny anymore.
>Go into foodcourt, everyone staring at me, try to act calm.
>Set helmet down on table to walk 5 feet away to order at cheap Indian place.
>Get back to table, 2 cops (not mall cops, real cops) standing by my table staring at me.
>"You're not from around here are you?"
>"...No sir, is there a problem?"
>"Be careful leaving your stuff sitting around in the future, wouldn't want it to get stolen."
>o_o ... "Yes sir."
>Eat food awkwardly...
>Wanted to walk around mall, feel like I'm in a creepy movie and gtfo before people start trying to eat my brains.

...Yet another child asked if they could pet the Mohawk.

>>
>>6376313
It's not *normal* but may be an easy fix.

The fact that high throttle helped probably means moisture in the ignition. The extra heat dried it out.

Check for water intrusion in the spark plug wells. The drain holes may get clogged, and wet wires don't give good sparks. Run a pipe cleaner or compressed air nozzle through the hole to flush the crud.

What year, make, and model of bike is it?

Show you all the nice things you can't have in Cali since they don't want law abiding citizens defending themselves/loved ones, having fun or enjoying common sense.

But then again, who would want to meet a stranger from the ass-end of the internet for a gun related business.

Enjoy your trip and don't kill yourself/others.

>>
>>6376908
The seat is most likely vinyl over foam rubber. High temperatures will hurt you more than the vinyl, but UV and ozone will dry out and age the material leading to cracks and failure. Water getting into seams will rot the foam below, breaking the material down and making the seat prone to tears due to weakening of the thread.

I just have one question for you. You clearly care about how you look on the bike (mohawk) but you leave the reflectors on the back of you bike. Why? Legal reasons in across the country (honestly don't know all states laws on bikes)? Don't care about it? Worried about visibility?

Other than that I hope you had a good ride. I'm planning on taking a nice trip down to Laguna Seca again for the GP.

The reflectors I took off before I left. I'm going to get a fender eliminator ASAP as well. All in due time.

Anywho...

I'm about to head out of Phoenix and head for Albuquerque. Something is wrong with my neck today... I don't know if it's strained from yesterday or I slept on it wrong, but it was already quite fucked and now I can't hardly move it without a ton of pain and feeling oddly sick. Indeed. I stand by that. I stand by it as well, I just have a different outlook on my own life right now.

>>6378694

Gotta say I felt kind of cool in skinny designer jeans, wearing a ferrari shirt, my sunglasses, and my Dainese boots tucked under the pants, blasting down a few streets right in the heart of Phoenix. Was quite an experience I'm glad I had, but not a habit I will make.

Also, as it would turn out, New Mexico DOESN'T have a helmet law, but again, it was a one time experience.

>mfw riding into town and all the diehard harley dudes have no helmets on.

Although 90% of the bikers I passed were full ATGATT. Passed a guy on a gixxer 1000 near the track here wearing a full suit as well.

>>6378338

Kevlar Jeans, Riding Boots (not full race spec GP boots but still, motorcycling riding boots), a Dainese textile jacket, Kevlar Jeans, Gauntlet Gloves and a full face helmet is not proper gear? I'll admit, I was riding way too hard for THAT gear. That's commuting gear. I had the day trip planned out and my suit was suppose to be in by then, but was late, so I went anyways. I should have ridden easier. I knew the risk I was taking and still don't regret it.

>>6378694

Can't say I recommend it. Not something to make a habit of. Did it once to experience it.
>>

Sorry, not into drugs, MJ or really even Alcohol. This semi paralyzed squid just road from San Diego to Albuquerque in two days, through extreme desert heat, in a full on Dainese Track Suit, Track Boots and Track gloves, on a supersport loaded down with luggage, with a broken foot, ankle, leg and messed up spinal cord for the sake of adventure. This semi paralyzed squid got hurt because he was knee down in Kevlars riding some of the most famous roads in the world.

What have you done today, Anon?

Anyhow, I'll post more photos, the full story, and some of the amazing adventures I had along the way when I'm not exhausted. Till then, goodnight everyone. Keep the sunny side up and the rubber side on the road!

P.S.

There's a fucking Krispy Kreme 1 mile away from where I am here in Albuquerque. Fuck...Yes...!

How am I going to tell you if you think they look stupid?

They were at the right price point and provided adequate protection. I prefer they were in a neon color but what can you do.

...What is people's morbid fascination with crusty glazed doughnuts? Are you surprised that the KK you went to was shut down? Nobody wants gross dried-out pocket pussys.

>Dunkin 4 LIFE, bitches.

Thinking of buying a Ninja 250R, 2011, 2100km as my first bike. $4800 which means I can just stick it on the credit card at purchase rate and save myself on loan/savings.

Is this a good first bike for someone totally beginner?

Getting professional lessons at the moment.

You won't be sad about that choice. I just have the street triple and it is fucking great to ride. Very nimble, good low-mid torque, nice power range, kinda rough gearbox, very natural ergonomics for someone my size (6'3" 230 lbs), plenty of get up and go, and good looking to boot. The bikes have a personality though. They aren't super track monsters. They are futbal hooligans.
>>
>>6381829
Man the bacon is alright but the ODB is god tier voodoo.
>>
>>6381824

let me guess, is it a nasty sugary mess? I don't think I really want to know if it's from krispy kreme.

people who think KK is good, have never been to a dunkin donuts.
>>
>>6381852
KK is alright when you get it fresh from the glazer. After that they are just normal doughnuts. Hell I think that safeway has better doughnuts then them after they get cool.
>>
>>6381829
I once drove 3 hours on a whim with done friends to stand in line for 2 hours for those doughnuts... Best decision of my life
>>
>>6381852
Dunkin is meh-tier at best.

>>6381856
Pretty much this.
>>
>>6381857
Wow. To think I hardly ever get them just because they only take cash. They are about 10 mins from my front door and I only have had them about a half dozen times ever.

However on drill weekend I can get a bucket of their day olds for $5 to share with all my friends. That bucket of voodoo love warms everyones clogged arteries.
>>
>>6381845
that is a good one as well. The memphis mafia is my fave, truth be told.
>>
>>6381879
I haven't tried it. All this talk of voodoo is making me think I might have to take a quick jaunt over there tomorrow.
>>
>>6381829
>>6381829
Fuck yeah voodoo donut!

Yeah, KK are overrated. The only good thing about them really is the texture when they are fresh. Other than that, donuts from mom and pop donut shops on the corner taste way better.
>>
>>6381896
Due, they're probably open now. Why wait?
>>
>>6381918
Ho...ly...shit. Open 24 hours. I'll be back with some voodoo awesomeness shortly.
>>
>>6381806
It's a good beginner's SPORT bike. Meaning, if you plan on riding sport bikes the majority of the time, this is where you start.

However, most beginners, seeing as they're BEGINNING, may not like the riding position of sport bikes. You lean forward while riding, and not upright like a cruiser. If you're getting professional lessons, chances are they have you riding an upright bike (cruiser or dual sport) since they're "easier" to ride.

there are a few on the HJC website but they are quite expensive, and i doubt the quality of the headphones is good. youd be better off buying a normal helmet and 40$ sennheiser earbuds i presume (ive never tried anything with speakers)

I am on the lookout for another bike for $3000 or less.

I'd like to get another GSXR-600 which is what I last had, but I rode it for about a year, but I've been thinking of a 750 or higher because I plan to do a lot more traveling with it than I did before.

Good idea to go up in size?

>pic related (bike I never should have sold :( )
>>
>>6381806

The fuck? Even with all the fee's that's a bit pricey. Are you talking Aussie $$$ ?

>>6382451

I know right!? I fucking love it!

All you crazy ass fuckers saying that dunkin donuts shit is better than Krispy Kreme can fuck right off. KK > Local Shops >>> Dunkin. They have gear coffee but their donuts are absolute shit. I usually go to local doughnut shops, but KK is in a league all of it's own. I'm about to ride over and get me one right now. Excite.

>>6382275

If you plan on traveling for any distance, don't get a supersport. Can it be done? Sure. But it's a pain in the ass, literally. And in the legs and many other places. Get a sport touring bike or an older adventure bike. Maybe an FZ1 or a V-Strom of sorts.

Probably only because you've got a holy exhaust, you're wobbling all over the road, crash shifting and stalling at every junction. Either that or they're 'miring your massive belly in dem sweaty leathers

You said you went from San Diego to New Mexico, do you live in San Diego?
There are many Krispy Kremes in Los Angeles (Where I hail from), so don't say there are none in California! (SoCal is best Cal anyway)

California Institute of Technology fag here, we eat that shit weekly. Dericious.

You can forget modern sportbikes at once.
Here are some older ones that are a tiny bit larger:
Triumph Daytona 1200
BMW R1100S
BMW K1200RS
Moto Guzzi V11 Lemans/Naked
Suzuki GSX 1400
Honda CB 1300
Yamaha XJR1300
Kawasaki ZXR 1200 R
>>
>>6382967
dang, I don't really like any of those

Just completed my MSF course on sunday, going to take my waiver to the DMV tomorrow and if everything goes according to plan buy a bike this friday.
