Nursing'd be fairly logical for me, I've volunteered with St.Johns Ambulance for a while now, and I've liked it. BC ambulance pays $2/hr unless called out to help, DURING SHIFTS, so I'd rather use schooling to get ahead. Forestry is pretty cool, I fucking love the woods, hiking, hunting, camping.

Spent almost 10 years involved in the local rallying scene (South West Ausfag here) spectating, marshalling, pit monkey and competing, and believe me, it's a lot more effort than it is rewarding. Motorcycle racing (and general road riding for that matter) is alot more rewarding.

I think the main misconception when it comes to glorification of "Rally" is alot of North Americans watch Youtube montages of cut footage displaying "amazing feats of driving" and "epic talent", when in reality most of it's quite a slower gentler pace in order to not crash out. Spectating is tedious, watch the lead 5 cars go through, then decide whether or not you want to beat them to the next spectator point to watch them drive past quite breifly again, or sit at the same stage, watch the rest of the field, then wait another 3 hours in the bush until they past through for the second time.

Going to a GP weekend (be it Moto or Formula 1) is alot more of an entertaining weekend, hell, even going to a local curcuit and spectating a simple track day (again, bikes or cars) is more entertaining...
    >>5772847
And there's alot more to getting a potential race car registered than "throwing in a cage". I think autoX is for you.

Of course, the terrain is simply far too uncertain and risky to go balls out all the time.
WRC replays only show the most hair raising of fast runs. The cream of the cream of the crop.
I've played enough RBR to know that it isn't smooth sailing and easy all the way through, and I'm cynical enough to know that I won't achieve anything anyways.
I'm not trying to imply that richard burns rally counts for any seat time, just that I'm not as head in the clouds as I may seem.

Gutting interior, rebuilding engine, HD shocks, gravel tires, fuel cell, race seats, flame retardant clown suits.
All of which is expensive as balls and time consuming.
I can do the latter, but not the former.

Honestly, driving is the easy part. It's getting together a willing group of friends that actually know what they're doing, and logistically getting everything and everyone to the event with accomodation that's the biggest challenge. And there's more to building a "rally car" than what you're implying too. Getting it registered and scrutineered to fit a particular formula is the biggest part. Honestly, getting a second hand race car is the cheaper option.
    >>5772865

THE CONTINUING CHRONICLES OF A NEWB BIKER ON THE INTERNET
Captain's log. Stardate, four. We've managed to decide on getting a Ninja 500 in the near future, but we need more to get this adventure off the ground. I've made contact with a local tribe of sexually attractive horse-women that assure me they can sell protective gear that would fit our species. But they have many brands to choose from, and styles.

What pants/jacket are gonna be best for a 3 or possibly 4 season rider? I've heard good things about the Shift Trifecta Storm Series, and the Olympia AST 2. I live in the Philadelphia area, so temperatures fluctuate between roughly 100F in the hottest part of summer to about 5-10F in the winter.

nice on getting a ninja 500, I started on one and I really liked it! nothing under 3k rpm, then it's ok to 7, 7500rpm and then it gets batshit crazy fom 8k to the redline. Of course now that I've ridden other bikes I realise it was not that fast but it sure was entertaining
You might want to look at technic (tecnik?) and firstgear. It won't be pretty but touring gear is the most comfortable gear IMHO

I don't want to carry gasoline AND propane behind 350 gallons of deisel.

Most conversions I've heard of are Goldings(not beginner material) and BMW's. The majority uses a sidecar to store the tank in, so that may be a space issue, but I've seen ugly as fuck BMW's with the tanks mounted to the rear seat.

But why even go with propane? I mean, Enfields can get 70 mpg, if that isn't good enough, what will be?

Seems more practical than diesel, because I can get a generator that runs on propane, which can use fuel from my propane piggyback, and its illegal to burn the diesel in my fuel tanks in a motorcycle (or vice versa, haven't checked lately, but either way, I'm still carrying an extra fuel).

Your best bet would be some sort of small displacement diesel conversion in an older Japanese Standard of sorts, but it's be more trouble than it's worth. There is no way I'd want to be riding a motorcycle with a pressurised propane tank on board, and I don't think I've ever seen it before (surprised if it's even legal tbh).

Honestly, you'd be well off with an older aircooled trail bike that's good on fuel. Something small and light, so it's not to hard to ride up on the cat walk and possibly fits between your sleeper and the trailer (I'm pressuming you're getting this as an on board "run about"). Just carry a 20L Jerry on your truck and it should be enough to get your small displacement trailly a conservative 400 miles.

Diesel generators cost as much as my truck does. I'd still need onroad diesel or gasoline for the bike, so that's still 3 fuels.

I think you forgot that I have propane on board already.

My only issue with a jerry can, is that they're illegal to carry in some states.

I've seen how much trouble a diesel converion is, and it doesn't seem too bad to me, but I don't have the time to set one up, and I really need a bike for parts running from day 1.

I see what you mean, but I would dread to think what would happen in a simple "drop" that ruptures the tank. I've witnessed one accident that involved an LPG equiped car getting rear ended, and it's something I'd like to forget... hate to see a motorcyclist cop the full force of a ruptured tank.

    A few questions for you;
Are you allowed to carry a fixed petrol (Ausfag here, I'll call it gas for your benefit) resivior to your truck?
Where are your propane tanks mounted? Behind the cab (as I see a few road train prime movers here fitted as such) or behind your regular diesel tanks on the chassis rails?

I think I might be able to use a fixed tank. I can't imagine an old canister tank from a boneyard would cost much. I wouldn't want to get a 50 gallon, fill it for my generator and bike, then find out I'm 200lbs over the gross weight limit because of it.

Yes, it does have 4 fuel tanks. 2 100s and 2 75s. I need to find out how much each set affects axle weight, and whether or not they're all plumbed together.

That bike does look very well suited to my needs, since all I've ever handled is dirtbikes. 250 and 500.

Just get three kinds of fuel onboard, it's less trouble than propane/diesel conversions for your bike, more so if you want it cheaper.

Honestly, I doubt you'd need anywhere near 50gal of gas on board. The bike'd barely use 4gal to travel 200 miles, and I imagine you'd get a gas powered generator to further warrant the carrying of another fuel source, which are not only the cheapest self propelled generators off the shelf (at least from what I know), but still extremely efficient. When my parents went on an their Australian outback travel, they took a 1kva Honda generator that used around 1L of gas per 12 hour. So I doubt you'd need too much at a time unless you don't see a truck stop or a road house for weeks at a time.

Also, what would you be running off the generator? Is it one of the fixed jobs that double as a sleeper cab air conditioner?

Another suggestion of motorcycle. Add this, top mounted box, and it'd make a decent, reliable, fuel efficient parts runner. I'm a big fan of eliminating water cooling if it's not necessary, one less component to go wrong, especially if your truck's stopped 50 miles from town, you don't wanna temperamental bike...

I'd be running the A/C and a 2000w inverter, along with a refrigerator, and possibly an electric stove, a battery maintainer for all 4 batteries, and whatever powertools the air tanks can't handle on tops of 12V faggotry, and a diesel burning heater in the winter.

I thew out 50gal since its one of the smallest frame mounted tanks for heavy duty trucks. To get the power I need I'll be burning about 1L/hr in a generator, so 50gals wouldn't last me a month on that alone.

Air cooled seems like a pretty good idea. I'd probably just go with a folding flat platform in the back and carry some straps to tie parts down on. I wouldn't want to get something limited to carrying nothing larger than a starter. Anything too small to carry on a platform I can likely throw in my pocket or jacket.
