Honestly, anyone buying a family car/DD and not buying a mercedes w124 is just stupid. Bulletproof motors, awesome interiors, usually very cheaply priced, easily enough power for DD usage, plus, if you have any questions about em you can usually get an answer within 5 mins on the mercedes forum/w124 board. Also the peachparts forum has a tut on how to do EVERYTHING to them.

I need a gf friendly car, her 1995 Legacy wagon has got 240k on it and is getting in need of too many repairs.

    Price - $7-12k
Things she wants: wagon (a must, has big dog and lots of stuff), would like AWD but isn't required, 25 or better combined MPG would be nice.

    Any suggestions would be nice.

Suzuki SX4 any good? Another Subaru would work.

So, for someone who knows nothing about cars and looks for a cheap one(below 4k), is it better to go to a used cars dealer or a private owner?

Its pretty risky to buy from someone you don't know right? And dealers inspects their vehicles?

if you're looking at buying from a private seller, get them to agree to let you take the car to a licensed machanic, and pay the garage mechanic to go over the car and look for issues. That's one way to avoid getting a car with existing issues the seller is unwilling to disclose. This is a good idea anyway, as at the very least, it gives you a second opinion for a small fee.

    Hi guys

I have $3,000 in cash and I'm gonna finance another $9,000, A lot of people have recommended your standard civics, mazda3's, and corollas, but I can't seem to find anything for under $12,000 that doesn't have a million miles on it.

For chrissakes, I found an accord with something like 150,000 miles on it, and they still wanted 10,000.

Can I not get a car for under 12,000 with relatively low mileage (under 50,000) that I can depend on? Is there someone else I need to be looking aside from the local dealerships?

second don't finance a car unless you are pretty stable in your life and done with all your school and shit. you're fucking stupid for that

stop looking for such a new car and it wouldnt be 10k for 150 miles.

DO NOT go by asking price. Go by what the car is actually worth (A.K.A. what that car actually sells for whether it's dealers or private sales). Do some research on cars your interested in. Look it up on Edmunds and KBB.
DO NOT go by how much they say they put into the car or how much they paid for it. Go by it's value. It's like a stock. You shouldn't care what the price of the stock was when they first bought it. What matters is what it's worth now. Do your research and come back with your own conclusions.

Of course you found an Accord for that much because Accords, Civics, and Corolla's values are stupid high (because of their reputation). You want a cheap car that's not that old with few miles? Go buy a Cobalt (Protip: don't REALLY buy a Cobalt). FYI, you are looking for something with closer to 60-70k miles at that price.

2003+ Accords are acceptable too as long as you get the 4 cylinder with the manual transmission. 6cyl autos may be more popular, but less reliable because the V6 has a timing belt instead of a timing chain and the AT on 2003+ Accords is questionable at best. If you can find a newer Accord with a stickshift, jump on it, it will run forever. Too bad they're near impossible to find these days.

    Hey!

I'm looking at a first car, a 2001 E39 wagon, 107k miles. It's also a 5-speed. I would have ~8k to spend on it if I do buy it. So, I ask you, iz dis kar gud?

    Thanks in advance!

Also, pic related - the car.

I finally found something that looks ok, I'm just not sure if 75,000 is too high for a Mazda 3. Is this a decent car for under 12,000?

I was in the same predicament a few months ago.

Looked like crazy at used car lots and autotrader.com

Eventually found an 07 Nissan Maxima for $12,500.
Only 59k on the odometer as well.

It's not as cheap as a Civic or Corolla, but it also doesn't feel like a tin can either. Not as good on gas either, but it's a V6, so MPG will be average. Great, solid feeling car that's very reliable if you take care of it with regular maintenance.

One warning: Nissans are notorious for torque steer, and only newer ones (2010 and newer) have gotten rid of the issue. If you get a Nissan, expect to deal with that small problem. Otherwise, an overall good car.

If so make sure they have not just been sitting around. Porches actually last LONGER if you drive them then if you were to garage them and not drive them.

I have a 1995 Toyota Tercel as a daily driver and a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 sitting in the underground parking until I pay the loan off so I can properly afford to insure it again. So far the Tercel has been MUCH more reliable. Tercel is 5 speed and I got it with 205,000 kms in November of 2010, 228,000 kms on it now. The MS3 I bought new in October of 2007 and now has 131,000 kms. I parked it at the end of May in favour of the Tercel. Loving the Tercel fuel economy. $45 per tank instead of $70 and also more kms per tank.

If you wanna car that is reliable, decently cheap on gas even comparing to new cars, and super cheap and easy to fix yourself, there is no better than a 95+ Tercel. When I got it two shocks were blown. I bought a set of all 4 shocks on ebay and with shipping to Canada was only $190. I installed them myself with ease. 3 times I had one of my rear shocks blow out on my MS3 and just ONE of them WITH 20% off all parts I buy at my dealership was $141 with tax. The Tercel is so cheap it isn't even funny. You want it sporty too? Just buy the 4efte motor and transmission which are EVERYWHERE and get it swapped in. $2000 max all in even in Canadian dollars, and you instantly get a 135hp turbocharged motor. There is a guy in Australia who dyno'd 380 whp from the 4efte 1.3l turbo (obviously with extensive upgrades).

135 hp at the crank can do a lot more in a 1950 lb car than a 180 or so hp motor can do in a 2800+ lb modern car. Even with the stock 93 hp for teh lulz I raced with a guy with a 3rd gen GTi and he was convinced I had done something to the motor yet my car is completely stock. Why would I mod it? I only have my MS3 a bit modded.

What you talkin' 'bout? The 4efte is a motor that was produced only for the Starlet GT and it's predecessor, the Galanza. It was never produced for Canadian markets or even US. Those two cars were only in japan and a couple small Caribbean and Asian countries. It is the most common swap for the Tercel and Paseo because the motor and transmission are a direct bolt in. The only think you have to do is splice either 2 or 3 wires from the 4efte's harness to it's ecu depending on the generation of Tercel you are swapping it into. My 5th gen Tercel with the 5efe stock is supposed to be the easiest candidate for the 4efte swap.

Moff, you won't find a cheap Dart. They are highly sought after muscle cars. They were some of the lightest ones around, being A-bodies, and around 3000lbs when stripped down. Much lighter today, using tubular K-members, and aluminum heads and block with an Indy 340. The Dart is nearly as iconic as the 68 Charger. Good luck, but it's not going to happen unless you buy one of the post-71 models with the huge bumpers and ugly remodeling and low compression engines.

I'm looking to downsize to a smaller, more fun car. The Jeep is worth about $7-9k, since it's basically loaded and only 76k miles.

What type of cars can I expect to get in that range, either trades or after selling mine and going back to craigslist to buy?

What do you guys think about used BMW 3 series, 1998 or so? If I find one that the owner's clearly taken care of, have a mechanic check it out for any issues, and take good care if it myself, would it hold up pretty well? I hear such mixed things about cost of ownership/reliability from people,

funny. I'm actually looking for a fun weekender and I was wondering if I should have fun fixing-up an older Datsun Z, a mid-nineties ZX or just say screw all the fixing-up and get an '09 370Z and not die if I'm ever in an accident.

some details: I'm 32, one of my first cars was a '72 240z, rusted as shit, wouldn't start without the block heater [and a healthy shot of starting fluid straight into the carb] and I loved every minute of that piece of shit's existence in my life. I make a pretty good living [low 6-figures] but I have terrible credit [I'm rebuilding, but for a while to come no dealer's going to give me a $30K-ish car right now, unless I put $29K down. hehe] I have a wife [who really wants me to get the older Z and play mr.-fix-it with it.] and kids, but we have a family car for when I'm not hauling them around.

Which would be more rewarding? More fun?

    Thoughts?

Since you have already owned an S30 Z you already know how much fun they are to own and you already know about the rust issues. Take your time and wait for a Z with a good chassis to turn up since its a lot cheaper to pay a little more for a good car upfront instead of a rusty chassis that needs a lot of repair.

I wouldn't want to have to rely on either of my Z's as a daily drivers, but since you already have a family car I'd say go for it. I don't like seeing the 370z compared to the s30Z - they are completely different to drive.

I purchased and 06 Mazda 3 from a dealer yesterday. It was making a weird nose when I drove it, but it sounded like at worst a loose bearing in the water pump or something, so I bought it.

I took it to a mechanic today, and he says the engine's toast, and that the sound is a crankshaft bearing or something. Can't remember. Horrible engine noise is the jist of it.

Question is, now that I've made this horrible mistake, what are my options?

The dealer has a 72 hour exchange policy for anything new or used, but they have almost nothing else under 12,000, and certainly nothing that isn't dog shit.

If the engine is really totally trashed and there's no way to get out of this, how much would it cost to replace the engine?

Does anyone here know this? I've always been curious about the difference between wholesale and retail value of cars.

I kind of hate that you have to go to a dealer and haggle over a new car, and that no one really knows how much they cost. It should be like buying groceries or video games.

    Neat car
Tremendously unreliable by way of being both shitty and complicated.
    Heavy and Slow

    still fun...

I would not buy one as anything but a toy but I enjoyed mine when it was broken.

    How reliable are C230's?

    There's one in my town 2002 5-speed w/ 90k.
Not sure the reliability on early 00's Mercedes, but I'm looking for a nice DD that can be fun to drive on the highway. I have a 100mi round trip school voyage M-TH.

    Wat do, /o/?

"By 1999 the 722.6 tranny was sorted out pretty well. There are some Air Mass Meter issues that effect many models of MB, but not anything to get too worried about.

Many techs I know consider the W202 series 1996 and on to be the most reliable MB ever built, with the M111 equipped car especially so. The engine is very well made, has no head gasket issues, and after 1995 the wiring harness issues that plagued all 1993-1993 MB's were also sorted out.

Also, the post 1996 cars have the variable pressure AC system, which is also proving to be very reliable and robust.

Be careful of overfilling the engine oil, as the main crank seals can easily be wrecked by doing so. Make sure your PPI includes a close inspection under the car.

Also, the W202's that live where roads are bad can go through lower front ball joints.

There is mixed feelings on the Eaton M62 supercharger mounted on the M111 Kompressor cars. Eaton supes have long been built as sealed non-rebuilable units with a typical service life of 100-125K miles. While this is suitable to GM products, most MB's are still valuable and excellent cars at that mileage. However, the verdict is still out on this, and I understand M62 pricing has come down lots since it is being used in many applications.

My 1998 C230 is the best car ever to reside in our garage, and I'm going to drive 'er till she drops."

A little google helps. Not so sure if you saw this already, though.

I want something reliable, something that handles well, and gets good MPG. It's my DD, but most of my routes involve winding roads. I've got £2000 to spend give or take. I don't really give a shit about power, I just want something fun to drive. What handles better, stock, a Civic EK or a Corolla AE110? I'm leaning towards the Corolla, due to the 6 speed G6 and lack of ricer tax.

Acura. Its not boring like a Honda but reliable as one. Your dads Saturn is a fucking anomaly, He most take REALLY good care of it. A lot of Saturns break in some major way. They are shit. (and super ugly, ew.)

Ok guys should my mom get this volvo S60:

    http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Volvo/S60/MONTR%C3%89AL/Quebec/5_11628331_20060608064539908/

    or this one:

I would personally get the R, cause its faster and everything but I have heard a lot of good things about the inline 5s reliability and reliability is key here. much more important factor than performance.

ya the car was bought only a couple of years old by my uncle and he took good care of it and hardly drove it, then my dad bought it and he drives it carefully but doesn't really maintain it. He does an oil change maybe once a year and he drives it ALOT but I guess his grandma driving makes the car last, his dash even caught fire once and smoke was billowing out of the vents and the car runs fine. I'm gonna go for my licence in it, only thing is his handbrake needs to be fixed and theres some kinda link gone in the back. Check engine light is on all the time but I think its where he removed the catalytic converter LULZ

Don't be afraid of stickshift man, if there's a car you like but it happens to be a stick ask the dealer/owner to teach you how to drive it, it's half an hour in a parking lot tops, and since he's a salesman he will be more than willing to teach you if it means selling a car.
