02/05/10(Fri)19:04 No. 94091 It's
funny though, on things like education, I honestly believe
conservatives have the right answer. I've seen some mention of it in
this thread as well, and I doubt this is a bastion of conservatism. But
if you want to repair a terrible education system, you essentially need
to reduce the power of teachers unions, if not remove them completely.
Pay should be standardized, if it's such an issue. Further, the methods
by which schools are funded are atrocious, the government just throws
money at the school, per student, that averages just as much, or more
than the tuition for prestigious private schools. Therefore, the federal
government, instead of subsidizing the poorly performing public
schools, should instead offer parents who fall, for instance, within the
schip level of income, a voucher in the amount that their local school
receives per student, to pay for a private school. In a case like
that, some government oversight of what would surely become a more
popular business (private schools) would be needed to ensure that a
minimum standard was met, but ultimately, great improvements could be
had by students in poor families who desired a better education. Unfortunately,
the other problem with educating the poor is that the culture
surrounding such poor areas is not very good. Gang culture, a culture
that derides success, these sorts of things are problems that parents
need to address, rather than the government.
