I first came here looking for yaoi a few years ago and later grew out to the other boards. I find it funny and there are interesting things here. It's sort of a go-to place. I suppose the idea that we are mostly anonymous plays a part in it, consciously knowing we are pretty safe behind out computer. Unlike other sites that don't necessarily require your real name and such (things like traditional forums, gaia, neopets, etc.) we do not get banned as easily. We have more freedom to speak our minds and even express out wrath without worrying about being ridden.

I first came to 4chan because of the pictures, but I kept coming back because of the discourse, the special once-in-a-lifetime events that happen on the imageboards, the useful information they give out. The fact that you can repost, or even edit images and repost them without having to give out credit, this shared culture.

4chan and the other imageboards are the cloest thing to a hivemind, as a matter of fact imageboards are practically hiveminds because we speak as one unified anonymous voice.

The fact that it's so simple to use and to type that it's difficult to return to western forums. I still go to one or two western-style forums, one of them is a democratic politics BBS.

The end result of this is that I discovered people who are in the same community, I ended up getting a skype and start learning to use irc to be more connected.

Basically: I came for the pictures, I ended up becoming part of a community that is closest to a hivemind in real life.
