a single lightrail downtown and a lot of buses do not a metro make.
A metro is a heavy rail train network operating inside a city with a frequency of 10 minutes or less, can be surface level but for best operation should be grade-separated to subway or elevated.

and then connected to a commuter to go out to suburbs and beyond.
    >> Anonymous 04/30/10(Fri)12:47 No.782368
The problem is retarded leftists are trying to penalise people into using buses instead of MAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT EFFICIENT, CHEAP AND CONVENIENT.

The carrying capacity of a freeway lane is roughly 1800 vehicles per hour, or 2000 people per hour given average vehicle occupancy of 1.11 passengers. A typical six-lane freeway therefore carries up to 12,000 people per hour in both directions.
A double-track suburban railway, meanwhile, can easily support one train movement every three minutes in each direction without straining its capacity. A six-car train can carry around 1000 passengers before reaching crush conditions. Thus the rail line can carry at least 40,000 people per hour in both directions, and perhaps more depending on the signalling system and vehicle design.

    Do Freeways relieve congestion?

This picture is propaganda, look at the perspectives, in the final two pictures showing "efficient" small transportation the camera is zoomed out more to increase the effect.

Also the bus picture is assuming every single one of those people want to go from point A to point B at the exact same time and it also assumes that a bus is individually as efficient (each person loses no more time than) the individual cars.

    Propaganda is propaganda

No one said that dipshit. Commuter train. HEAVY RAIL. Multiple Electric Unit. Get the picture? A commuter train traveling form a city centre terminal, through the metropolitan, through the surrounding urban area, through to suburbs, terminating at rural fringe. Lets say out to 34 miles. Numerous lines, classic hub and spoke arrangement.
Regional railways extending several of these to regional areas, smaller cities/big towns, rural areas, etc out to say 100-200 miles. Operating Diesel Multiple Unit or Locomotive hauled since the expense of electrification probably isn't worth it, although if you want to fine.

Invest more in Public Transit = More people using public transit.
More people using public transit = less people using freeways
Less people using freeways = less money spent on freeways
Less money spent on freeways = more money for public transit
repeat as neccessary. Eventually the system ends up spurring its own growth.

I've visited Boston a bunch of times, parking isn't easy to find. No idea what Hyde Park is like. Or where it is.

    It's more convenient and personal.

Plus America's population density favors personal transportation more.

Metropolitan dwellers also have to buy grocery and commute to work. Living in the city does not completely eliminate the need to travel.

also, shitloads of people live in suburbs within or near metro ares, they need cars.

a suburban commuter train network has already been described, please scroll up
as for getting to/from it from a distance greater than walking well the bus acts as a feeder, picks people up in suburbs and streets drops them off at station or other places in the area

    >Spend 5 minutes online with journey planner to find the fastest route for me
    >Put money on card (once a month, takes 30 seconds, can be done at any station or 90% of shops)
    >Get onto bus/tube
    >Swipe Oyster card
    >Go to where I want

    IT'S SOOOOOO COMPLICATED

    >Find out how I'm going to afford a car
    >Learn to drive
    >Get car insurance
    >Needs continuous maintenance
    >Needs to be refilled with gas
    >Have to find parking every day/night, not so problematic for home/work but an issue for other travel

considering how sparse some suburbs are and the amount of shit people buy, it might not always work.

Also, people don't want to plan their trips around public transportation holiday time.
