Welcome to the Union, Puerto Rico State.I'm slightly upset that the news media didn't report on it till after you were accepted :S
lol all the teabaggers will have to buy new flags
sauce?
seems cool
i cant find sause anywhere. Troll/
no news site has this so its fake
just saw this on tv, weird that not many people are reporting it, i thought it would be pretty important.
There was supposed to be a vote today, I just don't know the outcome.
no it's somewhat true. congress is trying to pass a bill that would allow puerto ricans to vote on whether they want to change that status of puerto rico. if they vote yes than there will be another vote as to whether it should become a state or an independent country.
>>774881Congress is just voting to give PR the option to vote to determine their statehood or continuing as a US territory.
would that be out new flag?
>>774895*our
I don't want that shit on my flag, change it.
>>774899>my flagsince when does a flag belong to one person and not a whole nation.
hr2499.orgIt's a vote to have a vote to have a vote on statehood.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iHt7l4GE4eRV-pIV1OXVEUta0kogD9FCUDHO0I think adding a state would be sweet. If Puerto Rico votes to join, Republican senators will probably filibuster it. :(
>>774895No, it'd be much more similiar to our current one.
>>774891oh good another fucking resource drain for a entire region of useless parasites.
>>774915i'd laugh if they did and then got reamed for blocking the will of the people and allowing people to get government benefits without having to pay taxes.
PR STATEHOOD? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
>>774916but there would be an uneven amount of stars.how could they fit one more star in without making it look retarded.
Shit. And I thought our flag couldn't possibly look any gayer.
>>774928NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>774952Si.
Good god, that's a really dumb-looking flag.
>>774910which is nothing new as puerto rico already goes through these votes every so often.
The other design option
>>774962It's a eu style flag. Liberals admire the eu you know.
http://interactive.foxnews.com/livestream/live.htmlLivestream, hit the stream to the right of the default and you'll be at PR coverage.
Just redesign your shitty flag, amerifags.
>>774981i prefer OPs one than that. it looks uneven because it begins with a long line and ends with a short.
In other news: Spanish becomes the official language of the USA.
GUYS I CAN SEE IT NOW
what, we're going to pick up one state and lose 2 others?
>>775026You are now imagining 51 stars in the form of Triforce on our flag.
The 48-star flag is the best; it looks perfectly uniform and doesn't alternate between 6 and 5 star rows.
>>775059Symmetry is a beautiful thing.
Best flag is best.
there is no need for PR to become a state. we have done fine without them and they have done fine without us. they can still vote and are citizens. its just liberals who want them to have seats in the house and senate which they can't do if they arent a state.
>>775099>liberals wantDemocrats are voting against it, bro.
>>775007>>775007>>775007>>775007Holy shit. This is intense.
>>775094Shouldn't it be try TO stop us?
WELCOME TO THE UNION PUERTO RICO!
>>775125never was all that good at grammer
Wait hold on, did it just... PASS THE FIRST VOTE? WHAT?
>>775133I don't believe they were voted in.
FINAL VOTE JUST GOT BEGIN
Why would republicans vote no?
>>775210If Puerto Rico becomes a state, Democrats automatically win 6 congressional seats and 2 senate seats.Vote for the party, not for the nation.
>The referendum would have given Puerto Ricans the choice between the options of retaining their present political status, or choosing a new status. If the former option were to win, the referendum would have been held again every 8 years. If the latter option were to win, a separate referendum would have been held no later than December 31, 2011. In this referendum, Puerto Ricans would have been given the option of being admitted as a U.S. State "on equal footing with the other states," or becoming a "sovereign nation, either fully independent from or in free association with the United States."
>>775008I agree anon. The American flag looks silly with all of those stars.
>>775228how exactly would it hurt the nation to have new tax payers?
>>775210Because of one or more of the following:The Dems voted yes and they want to spite themRacismPreserve the status quoFear that the dems will get more votes in electionsTheir bellhop at the last puerto rican resort they visited shat in their luggage
>>774856shit yeah, that flag is still beautiful. America, I am proud.
>>775228Not really, it's a very slippery slope on to obtaining statehood. They're going to split the vote and make statehood win by popular referendum in PR with two other less popular options and no "none of the above" options.
>>775111Not all democrats are liberal bro.
>>775210 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-luis-gutierrez/why-the-rush-on-the-puert_b_556328.html
What exactly are the advantages/disadvantages of Puerto Rico becoming a state?
>>775283We'll be less racist
>>775283more tax payers/ probably democratic congressmen.
Well looks like this is going through to Puerto Rico at the very least.
>>775283Pros:They actually pay taxes for the government benefits they recieveConsSpanish becomes a more important language to the country
>>775261this>a separate referendum would have been held no later than December 31, 2011. In this referendum, Puerto Ricans would have been given the option of being admitted as a U.S. State "on equal footing with the other states," or becoming a "sovereign nationif this bill passes and moves on to the next stage. there is no way in hell our government will let them become their own nation. my guess is that they will launch a full scale campaign telling the puerto ricans to vote to become a state and list all the benifits etc and do everything in thier power to ensure that it all comes together.fucking assholes.
>>775243Actually, came up with this design. It gets rid of those stripes too. Can you yanks comment on this?
>>775311When New Mexico joined the Union, 80% of the population of the state spoke Spanish. It's not like this hasn't happened before. They've already been pushing for Puerto Rican children to learn English for a while now.
>>775332That's Texas's flag. Which is a rip off of Chile's flag. Why would you do this?
it passed :|
>223 yays >168 nays >My face when PUERTO RICO CONFIRMED FOR 51ST STATE.
It passed. Now to ask the Puerto Rico inhabitants themselves.
I FOR ONE WELCOME MY NEW SPIC OVERLORDS
Is the vote left up to the Puerto Ricans? Don't they have to pass some sort of test of statehood or something? English isn't even their main language taught in schools. :/Vote just passed.
>>775351theres still another vote. Dumbass
>>775348I just looked it up. lol it is. I guess Texas got it right then.
Solve the uneven flag issue: Split Puerto Rico into 2 states.
im for this!im also for- if Puerto Rico gets to vote at will to BECOME a state..then residents of the current states also get to vote at will to stop being a state, and become their own nation..every US STATE is larger than PR, so if PR can vote any time it want to turn into a state, the opposite is also legal for all other US states..
So when is Puerto Rico having their vote on this?
>>775332"the star spangled banner" is our anthemit needs to have more than one star lol."starS and stripeS"needs to have stars and stripes as in more than one of each.
>>775361The other territories didnt have to pass a test to join. All they had to do was vote to join and have their request approved by congress.
>>775371me thinks you right.. Dems may have just opened a king sized can of worms!!the COUNTRY of texas salutes you sir!
>>775371no we are already states. They are voted to be one or be independent. We just own them.
>>775382said no later than dec 2011
>>774899Fuck yes! Peace through inferior firepower.
>>775404Well that's not very definitive, that's over 1.5 years away.
puerto rico has been offered statehood in the past. the decline it every time. they like it how they are.i bet they will vote against it like they always do.
>>775417thats how politics work my friend.
Wow, we lose a Planet (Pluto) and possibly gain a new State. Such interesting times we live in. :)I'm hoping they vote Independence.
>>775393Yes.. but PUERTO RICO has already been given like 4 votes all of which they turned down statehood..So if PR get 5 chances to choose or not accept statehood, then every other state also has the right to re-think whether inclusion in the US is still in their interest. They should all be given a do-over chance, if one other entity is repeatedly given a doo-over chance..I bet at least texas/az and vt/nh will cecede..its their right based on this type of action.. these votes dont just go one way..,
>>775426why would they vote for statehood? They get welfare and benefits from our government and do not have to pay taxes. All they get if they join is to be taxed and call themselves american.
>>775391Didn't Texas begin as a country, and then came crying to the US to become a state because they couldn't handle their own shit?
>>775446yes they do. They are in limbo between independence and being a state. We arent. What dont you get? It wont happen.
>>7754171.5 years? that's fairly short for anything that comes out of congress.
>>775371THIS THIS!!!...fuck DC lets start new countries - PR now allows everyone to choose anew..
>>775453Mostly because they were getting assraped by Mexico.
Is their vote between becoming a State or Independence? Or is the Status Quo an option?
anyone watching that they arrested a grasshopper?
>>775453>>Didn't Texas begin as a country, and then came crying to the US to become a state because they couldn't handle their own shit?texas BEAT THE ENTIRE MEXICAN ARMY singlhandedly..THE USA wanted texas to be part of the USA.. so they repeatedly asked texas to join..NOT the other way around..when texas joined.. they joined as a indepedent republic that can withdraw from the union constitutionally at any time..
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
>>775472it appears that there will be a vote for status quo or change. if change wins then there will be a vote for what that change is.
>>775488Yes. I'm going to call him Jorge.
>>775493OH LOOKhistorical revisionism
Ummm.. if Texas had to ''beg'' the USA to be part of it..how is it that texas alone would not join the USA unless it had written agreement that it can withdraw any time it wants..doesnt sound like begging to me, especially since texas's only enemy, mexico, was already defeated by texas alone..lrn2histry
>>775445In other cosmic news: 3000 years from now we will have another moon as well.
>>775513remember the alamo
when does my states vote on staying a US state take place?...you know the way things are a lot of states are going to pull out.. this is a good thing to do..thanks lil' PR for the idea..
>>775446Because it's a one-way street? You can enter the union, you can never leave.
>>775536thats the mafia..not a democracy..in a democracy where states can choose to join, states can also choose to leave...enjoy some freedom..its on me..
>>775513but texas can't secede at any time it wants.
>>775543States are not people.
>>775543Neither the ordinance of annexation nor the joint resolution included provisions giving Texas the right to secede.[15] In its decision in Texas v. White in 1869, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Texas’ secession in 1861 had been illegal. The Court held that “[t]he Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union, composed of indestructible States.” The court did allow that divisibility might be possible "through revolution, or through consent of the States."[16]lrn2history.
>>775513if texas had already defeated mexico then what was the mexican american war about? how did mexico fight it with no army?
>>775546>>Both the original (1836) and the current (1876) Texas Constitutions also state that "All political power is inherent in the people ... they have at all times the inalienable right to alter their government in such manner as they might think proper.">>Likewise, each of the united States is "united" with the others explicitly on the principle that="governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed" and "whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government"
>>775575You guys dealt with this shit already. Turns out states don't have the right to secede.
Protip #1: Puerto Ricans have been asked by Congress through referendums previously, they have chosen either to accept the current status or not respond (none of the above), for fear of losing their cultural identity and having to pay federal taxes, this after clever campaigning by local political parties regarding the two.Protip #2: Puerto Rico's fate lies squarely on the hands of Congress. No Puerto Rican referendum can change that, and if Puerto Rico chooses statehood (a bid IF) Congress will still have to decide.
>>775555ummm.. right now, the settled supreme court law is that corporate entities are people..so if a private corporation is a ''person'' under terms of case law..then a public corporation is also
>>775575yes, tomorrow we could all declare that we are the nation of krypton and that dc can go fuck itself. we have no legal way of doing it but we could if we tried hard enough. this does not mean that a state can just leave at any time it wants. it's been ruled illegal. states have tried it before, they failed.
HR 2499faggots
>>775604>>775591>>775558>>775546states have this right if they can earn it
>>775280Don't see why he's whining. Puerto Rico is going to vote the status quo again.>>775493Is that was Texas history books teach?
>>775628that's nice but a state can't actually earn it.
>>775591AT THE TIME we ''dealt'' with it, lincoln also suspended habius corpus for everyone.. which is illegal, impriison anyone he felt like as though he were king george, and did not abide by any constitutional rights..so suggesting that catostrophic military force used by someone who suspended every constitutional right by his own admission is ''settled'' is not so...in the 19th century for instance britain became ruler over South Africa by ''then justified'' tactics of imprisoning the boers women and kids in concentration camps..the same type tactics were used by Lincoln / Grant (march to the sea) in the civil war era..in todays times/morals the good thing about the sensitivity-insanity that has now overtaken us is.. you cant use those sorts of tactics anymore..if PR gets a vote to enter, others get a FAIR vote to leave
>>775641life is not fair.Capitalism is not fairfucking deal with it states will not get a vote.
>>775641so you believe it's not settled because Lincoln ignored people's constitutional rights and that would never happen today?
>>775571>>if texas had already defeated mexico then what was the mexican american war about? how did mexico fight it with no army?DUDE your a real idiot.the TEXAS WAR OF INDEPENDENCE ended in 1836..the mexican american war did not even begin until 1846..and texas agreed to join the union a yr ealier..the M/A war had nothing to do with texas.. its was to take California and the rest of the west from mexico..ill take you ignorance apology now
>>775681your grammar is atrocious
>>775661i dunno about that anon, but i dont think anything is "settled" as long as humans can take up arms against each other>>775640my money is on the coming redneck uprising being successful
>>775661our constitution is very clear that the people have the right emmbeded into it to reform the govt the reports TO THEM as they see fit..this is not in question.. to assert the civil war from a time when very cooercive acts were deemed just fine is superceding the->>"whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government"is not correct.. unless you side with the entity that attempts to stop the excercising of that ability..I dont
>>775681The Mexican government had long warned the United States that annexation would mean war. Because the Mexican congress had refused to recognize Texan independence, Mexico saw Texas as a rebellious territory that would be retaken. Britain and France, which recognized the independence of Texas, repeatedly tried to dissuade Mexico from declaring war. When Texas joined the U.S. as a state in 1845, the Mexican government broke diplomatic relations with the United States.sure seems like texas had something to do with the war.
I hope Puerto Rico becomes a state SOOOOO bad. The level of trollage here could be off the chart.
Maybe those dirty fuckers will finally pay their fair share of taxes. god damn spic leechers.
is this bullshit?
>>775696except that, as that may be, ... my facts are right, and however good your grammar may be, your assertion was wrong..ill accept that as a apology of your situpidity..after mexican-american war, Polk took, cali, nv, or, wash, utah, wy, etc...so obv the already independent state of texas was not the real issue.. the real issue was to take all the land all the way to the pacific..not one mexican soldier attacked texas, was on texas soil, or had a army moving on texas..and texas was already independant and had totally defeated the mexicans army in the field without the US govt..
>>775742They're going to vote on being admitted, but this time there's going to be measures in place to discourage them from voting on the status quo and staying a territory
So 2 more Democratic Senators.Where's your filibuster now bitches?
Not one link in this entire thread.
>>775748I can't seem to find anything about this
>>775747I wasn't the one arguing with you. I'm just stating you are terrible at grammar.
i would like it if washington state could vote out of the USA..
>>775760It's not hard... search in google newsThe bill has been around for a long time, the house just passed it
>>775712Yea of course we have the right. Good luck fighting against the government who will label you as terrorists. Bring in the national guard to fight against you and keep you in line. Good luck with that.
>>775778
Doubt it'll get by the senate, and if it somehow does, the Puerto Ricans have to then decide if they want to join the Union. The last few times it's been put to a vote, the vote has always been no. They don't want to pay taxes.
>>775446I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of a Constitutional referendum every 20 or 25 years to give people the chance to vote for continued Union to go it alone. Some writers (such as 19th century writer Lysander Spooner) have felt that the Constitution is of "no authority" due to having been ratified so long ago that no one alive was involved in its creation. It might be good for the republic to put it up to a vote every now and then.
>>775797Again, this bill is supposedly different and will allow for a vote to be held that will put devices in place to discourage people from selecting the status quo and instead have to choose between independence and statehood. Only around 4% of the PR population supports independence, so...
