Instead he said '"If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

The distinction, sir, is that one can choose not to believe Jesus and suffer no consequences. Indeed, when choosing between one's existing religion and one that is proposed by Jesus, there is no reasonable criterion on which to base a decision, so one may as well decide based on which religion demands that you give up your possessions. One can choose not to believe in the government and still be imprisoned. Indeed, if the government told me that I would go to hell if I broke the speed limit, and had no real means of enforcement, I do not think I would have any reason not to break the speed limit.
