>>352209I just switched from my CFLs to incandescent bulbs when I found out they had mercury in them.Is that weird?
>>352179Old news, OP. But here is something to consider: the amount of Hg in CFLs is lower than the amount of Hg that would be trapped in coal fly ash slurry if you used incandescent bulbs.
I can't actually remember where I heard about this, but apparently some family had a CFL break in their baby's nursery. They had the EPA come out and take measurements of mercury levels in the room after they had cleaned it up (as in swept up the glass, not had some kind of massive sterilization done), and the room not only had a level of mercury under the "unsafe" threshold, it actually had no more mercury in it than any other room in the house.
>>352238Uuuuuuuh. What?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA2E14uKyZYCFL's still put less mercury than Incandescent in the environment ( and if you recycle, CFL doesn't put any mercury in nature), not to mention that since they use less energy & last a lot longer they are cheaper. CFL's are vastly superior to Incandescent.
>>352250http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/story.html?id=aa7796aa-e4a5-4c06-be84-b62dee548fda>How much money does it take to screw in a compact fluorescent light bulb? About US$4.28 for the bulb and labour -- unless you break the bulb. Then you, like Brandy Bridges of Ellsworth, Maine, could be looking at a cost of about US$2,004.28, which doesn't include the costs of frayed nerves and risks to health.
LEDs are the future.Unfortunately the market is too slow.
>>352251Burning coal releases Hg (among other really, really nasty things). To sequester the particulates in the smoke, it is basically sprayed with water. That results in coal fly ash slurry that then goes to sit in a pond to dry out. Since CFLs use less energy, that is less coal that has to be burned per lumen which means less Hg in the environment even though they have Hg in the tube.
>>352252>implying I'll have Mercury in my house just to help the earthYeah, fuck you. I'm buying some more incandescents right now.
>>352286CFL is fucking safe. Goddamnit you'll put more mercury in your organism by eating tuna than by having CFL's.CFL's are also cheaper in the long run.
>>352304Well I don't eat tuna anyway since shit is disgusting.Good to know you enjoy your mercury in your innards though.
>>352265This. But if you are worried about mercury don't look into the emissions from coal fired powerplants.
>>352316Goddamnit just see >>352250Yes mercury is bad, but CFL is FUCKING SAFE. Goddamnit if you ever had a Thermometer you had mercury with you.We can agree on tuna, though...
>If all 4 billion incandescent sockets were filled with CFLs we'd have nearly 50,000 pounds of mercury spread around every single US householdYou now realise this.
>>352265>Unfortunately the market is too slow.It has nothing to do with the market and everything to do with how shitty diffuse LED light really is.
Wow this is horribly old.
>>352326>Goddamnit if you ever had a Thermometer you had mercury with youThe only thermometer I ever saw growing up was outside my school. Behind glass.I've been without mercury in my life this long, definitely not gonna start now.
>>352328And we'd have orders of magnitude more Hg drying out in coal fly ash slurry ponds.
>>352328Only ~ 6 mg Hg/bulb? I can live with that.
I mean it really pisses me off that nobody told me these motherfuckers had mercury. I just bought them because "WELL THEY SAVE YOU MONEY MONTHLY"Plus they're way too fucking bright and hurt my eyes.
>>352371It says it on the fucking box you retard.
>>352373Hey asshole, I just checked a CFL box I had. There is nothing about mercury on it.Go fuck yourself you retard. Gonna convince my friends and family to switch back to incadescent.
2014 man. 2014 say goodbye to that orange tinted glow.
>>352500What happens then. Sun goes supernova?
>>352523Incandescent bulbs are banned for sale.
>>352446You fucking faggot. Pic related from US packaging.Look at the fucking top.
The reason for the incandescent lightbulb ban is LED and CFL uptake has been slow. There's too much money to be made in lightbulbs that break quickly. The contacts contain lead anyhow.
>>352265I have LEDS they get dimmer every time you turn them on and have a high acquisition cost.
>>352345There is Mercury everywhere. You just think you haven't been exposed to it.
I have a close family member that works with HAZMAT. The quantity of Hg in a CFL is relatively inconsequential unless you're stupid. Pick up the pieces with rubber gloves, carefully pat the surface dry with several plies of absorbent material. Put it all in a bag and dispose of it with the rest of your trash.Under no circumstances should you vacuum it up.
