32 KB Should States Raise the Dropout Age from 16 to 18? Anonymous 03/16/10(Tue)14:15 No.351472
Based on a news article: >O'Malley must find money for bill that would raise dropout age, Md. senators say

My objection to the dropout age raise is that what about teens who are unable to fit in socially or educationally in school.

But you should have your say.

The point of having it be compulsory is that it prevents parents from keeping their kids at home to work in family businesses.

Impoverished families would routinely force their kids to stay at home and not go at school if school was made a choice.
    >> Anonymous 03/16/10(Tue)16:08 No.352061
No, but it won't change anything.

The true problem with the education system is the parents who don't care about their kids, and think of it as free daycare.

Some kids would be much happier working that going to school. For most working class jobs, high school is unnecessary. Mandatory school is another example of liberal do-goodism whose end result is negative.

They should lower the drop out age.

I'm a liberal but my beliefs in the sanctity of education outweigh any sympathies here. If you aren't going to graduate then get out of school and stop wasting tax dollars. Schools should get rid of drop out prevention as well.

    >>352116

If you haven't taught them basic skills and literacy by high school age, you probably never will. At that point, they either can't learn or simply don't want to and it's not just going to seep in by osmosis. You could probably design an eight year curriculum that's superior to the modern 12 year and work on getting people into the workforce early, where they can learn skills and start earning money from a young age.

The modern culture of perpetual immaturity is what's ruining the West. Nobody wants to man up and work for a living anymore. Everyone wants to put off work, put off marriage, put off having kids in favor of a state of perpetual childhood and schooling. But where is that getting us? Nowhere fast, that's for sure. I'm all for being educated and constantly improving yourself, but the drive has to come from within and you need work experience to really know what it is you want to be doing with your career. You need to start off at the bottom, not get out of college at 22 (or more) with only burger frying experience and expect to rocket right to a 100k a year job.
    >> Anonymous 03/16/10(Tue)16:31 No.352194

I don't believe you should be allowed to drop out. They should be allowed to get rid of you if you're a worthless failure or put you into vocational training instead, but you shouldn't be allowed to drop out. The public has already invested thousands of dollars in your education, if you don't take it to a diploma the public should have the right to garnish your wages to pay back the cost of your schooling (adjusted for inflation to boot).

Of course the average dropout isn't einstein, but dropping out doesn't necessarily sentence you to a lifetime of failure either. Some people have their reasons. That's all. Einstein did.

if some moron wants to drop out of school at 14, let them. if you get rid of compulsory school laws, the only people that would suffer are the idiots who dont do well in school all ready. they will drop out and make the lives of the kids who want to study much easier since they wont have to deal with the tards disrupting class.

You(As a children) are getting a free education(meaning you don't have to pay for it[others do through taxes])and dropping out and losing that opportunity is the stupidest thing you can do in life. Enjoy your life at [Insert_local_fastfood_place].

And on the topic of "Oh I don't want to have to waste my tax dollars on those people".. That to is a stupid argument especially when your still going to pay the same amount of money to the state, it' snot like the dropout is going to lower your taxes by hundreds of dollars.

    To vote:
-Need to be able to read/write
-Need to be able to pass a civics/historical exam based on our country and it's ideas(founding fathers, etc)

If you can't pass those then you don't belong here.

We really don't do that to begin with. No one forces you to take the SATs, ACTs,etc. They just want to see you make something good of your life when they try to teach you on that shit.

Also on apprenticeships I don't see how it's hard to find one... Down in the city you can find plenty of businesses willing to teach you the trade.
