/new/ im 19 and its so hard to find people my age to have discussion with about politics, world wide news, local news, and just basic shit going on the world. And every time i try to spark up a convo about something in those topics they dont know what to say, its like i can only come to here and other forums to have a conversation about these things.

what does that say about teens?

and where the hell can i find some people like me?

Yeah, I have the same problem.

A few days before the elections, I said something like, "I'm still not quite sure who I'm going to vote for." A friend of mine said, "there are elections coming up?" I had to explain to him that there are elections every two years.

When the elections actually happened, I was hanging with the same friend watching the results. He asked why Obama wasn't running again this year.

He also told me he doesn't care about politics because it "doesn't affect him."

This generation is fucked. Everyone should have a basic knowledge of how the government works and at least keep up with events by checking out multiple news sources. If you have an uneducated and apathetic populace, the government can get away with all sorts of crazy and stupid shit.

Try joining your local committee. Whatever your party there is a youth group. Begin in your county or city and you can find more.

I was talking with a close friend of mine today about the stripping of free speech rights, and he said one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard in my life.

"As long as it doesn't happen to me I dont care"

I'm in the same boat as you OP, its frustrating having no one to talk to about anything political or newsworthy.

others like you face the same problem and if you investigate a bit you should find them. In my High School I noticed a group that frequented the city library as I did. It was a clique composed of the smartest kids in my class.
Till then I was content with no studying and getting C's. I took a few books home, got all A's and was accepted into their group.
College was full of politicized people. If you aren't in school hang around one.

    Hello 19 year old, I'm a 32 year old.

When I talk with the *average* adult, I have the exact same problem. I talk about world events and people are like "um wat"?

This is going to sound classist in a way, and it IS classist, but you need to find people who are like minded as yourself. People who have an interest in the world outside their front door. They do exist, you yourself are proof of it.

My solution was to hang out with people older than myself. I found at 19 that most of my good friends were 25 or older, with a few very bright teenagers who shared the same interests as me, and I loved it that way.

When you're a person who doesn't fit into the norm, you have to seek out exceptional people who also don't fit into the norm. You can't change society, you have to find those in society who share your ideas.

    >"Plastic People" struggle with managing their own reality and feel a strong need create ideological and artificial securities. To hold on to and defend their dogmatic beliefs and/or want to escape the sensation of natural living (religions, drug abuse, TV, obesity, consumerism, etc.). These people do this even against a tide of evidence that they are misguided on important issues. The ultimate reason for this state of denial and confusion is a set of primal, mainly subconscious psycho-emotional fears. Most importantly the fear of rejection by the mother, family, friends, school, their partner and other parts of society. This is the fear of not belonging and of not experiencing truly loving relationships. The 'below-the-radar' fear management causes chronic forms of psychosomatic stress and holds back a persons true natural flowering potential.

Good universities usually are a good place to have such discussions

I was a history/politics major the last 2 years and most people understood the basics of politics as things currently stand. What I found was most people were much weaker on history and scarcely had a clue most of the time

All of Generations Y and Z are utterly fucked. X will be as well by the time they reach retirement. Y will get ruined, forced to help their ill-prepared parents and Boomers, in the middle of an imploded economy, making it very difficult to afford and raise children. Gen Z will probably see some recovery but will still be buttfucked by the whole thing as well, in almost the same way unless something changes dramatically

TLDR engage in university politics, try to survive the bullshit ahead for Gen Y

Casting a ballot is a embodiment of your will as a citizen of your country.

Aside from national elections your local elections have some of the greatest impact on your life.

If you don't vote you have no right to complain about the direction of the country, You did voice support or opposition in the proper outlet. You just sit in your chair and thwack away at the keys of your computer emptying all of your views on the internet where they evaporate into cyberspace.

AND....YOU....,CALL THE PEOPLE THAT VOTE SHEEP??!?!?!?!?

Voting merely legitimises the system where you have no real choice. No matter who you vote for the power strutctures are the same. No matter who you vote for the same corporations, lobby groups and rich interests control out lives.

What upsets me is the ignorance people have with history. I'm sure they ( the idiots who claim voting has no value) have heard about people in history fighting for their right to vote, but I"M PRETTY DAMN SURE they don't understand the sheer magnitude of its importance. It upsets me the fight our forefathers have fought for, our rights to vote, has been deduced to idiots bickering about "the man," "corporations," and " big government." Well done, you have completely failed to analyse the historical context of those struggles. At the time, the same complex mechanisms of disenfranchisement that countries such as the United States have, did not exist. Back then voting actually meant something but on its own could STILL not deliver real meaningful change for working people.

No matter who you vote for, the same power groups are in charge. Whether it is Obama or McCain or corporate puppet #3 there will only be minor differences in policy but absolutely no challenge to the dominant ruling order. Working people will continue to be crushed and exploited and the interests of the rich will continue to be pushed.
