43 KB Audio indicates kid directed planes at NY airport Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:18 No.269979
By DAVID B. CARUSO (AP) – 1 hour ago

NEW YORK — An air traffic controller at New York's Kennedy Airport was suspended for allowing his young son to radio instructions to several pilots. The few quick exchanges between the elementary-school-aged child and jets waiting to take off from JFK, one of the nation's busiest airports, appeared to delight pilots at the time.

"I wish I could bring my kid to work," one said, wistfully.

But the Federal Aviation Administration suspended the controller and a supervisor Wednesday after recordings of the calls were posted on the Internet, then reported on by a Boston television station.

"This lapse in judgment not only violated FAA's own policies, but common sense standards for professional conduct. These kinds of distractions are totally unacceptable," FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said in a statement. "This kind of behavior does not reflect the true caliber of our work force."

Yes, some kid repeating what his dad told him into a microphone is the end of the fucking world. PLANES ARE FALLING OUT OF THE FUCKING SKIES BECAUSE OF THIS.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:28 No.270038
Poor guy. He'll probably lose his job over this. There is nothing unsafe about it, but both the ATC and his supervisor (2 people with the qualifications, knowledge and experience to know exactly what they were doing) are going to get hell because someone who knows jack shit about aviation thinks that it sounds unsafe.

    >There is nothing unsafe about it
Yes, because it's totally and absolutely safe to allow a 5 year old to direct planes with hundreds of people on it. I'd be super pissed if I were on one of those planes. They put my life in the hands of a child instead of a professional pilot. What the fuck.

Yeah, you're right. I bet the pilots would have said the kind of things they did if they were danger. The dad probably had his son talking down planes with both pilots dead and a terrified passenger at the helm.

In fact, I'm fairly confident I died on one of those flights.

No, but they do in fact *gasp* control the air traffic flow! I know, I was shocked when I found that out too. They're important in directing planes.

    >>270134
I'm arguing that it's unsafe and not fair for the passengers of a flight to be subjected to a kid giving orders from air traffic control. Nothing went wrong, but it's still not safe nor a smart thing to do. These guys went through years of training to be authorized to do what they do.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:44 No.270168
Pilot here. The kid was obviously doing what his dad said to him, and did a good job of it to boot. If the people who worry about this listen to what people say over the radio sometimes there would be mass hysteria.

The dad was still controlling, just letting his son (and the pilots by the sound of it) have a bit of fun. number 1 rule of aviation; if the pilot has any reason to deem something unsafe, it is his say on what to do including going against ATC.

If the kid did not repeat what he was supposed to in the microphone, it would have been immediately corrected.

The most important part was that everyone in the tower would have been aware of the kid. Their supervisor clearly had no reason to believe the kid could have comprimised the safety of the ATC.

Okay, then taking out the unsafe part because you obviously think it's a-okay to have a kid directing air traffic, considering that he isn't even the least bit qualified to do so, realize at the very least that it's unprofessional and unfair to the other passengers who maybe didn't want a kid to direct their plane. When you're in a plane, your life is in the hands of the pilot and the air traffic control. Some of the passengers might have been okay with this, but it's unfair to them to assume all of them were okay with it when they placed their money and lives in the hand of the pilots and techs from air traffic control, not in a kid.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)19:18 No.270811
This report is such hogwash and nothing should happen to these people. It would be one thing if they had a kid controlling incoming airplanes, but that obviously wasnt what was happening all the kid did was just tell some planes they were ok to proceed to their runway under the eye of his father. No harm done in a harmless situation

Its no different than any other bring your child to work day, you can let the kid do some of the very simple tasks just so he can experience it but you would never bring them to a real serious meeting or do any sort of meaningful work on a project. wow, Americans really have become a nation of babies.

If you are going to complain, complain about things that actually impact you, like not getting health care.

All I read is a bunch of idiots who think actually think this is going to lead to kids flying your planes and think the two are even remotely comparable.

I think you have a point, often times humans are reactionary to events that happened in the past and didnt actually negatively affect them but once they know after the fact they rage or fearful. I have my own personal story of a news reporter trying to elicit this rage/fear response about an event that I had no previous knowledge about and didnt effect me in any way.

I work in the downtown area of Denver and work in a very tall building with a bank at the bottom. One day a couple months ago I was going out with some co-workers for lunch and there was a TV reporter looking to interview someone, the lady picked me and I was fine with it. She asked me what I thought about the bank being robbed a couple days before at my building. This was the first I ever heard of it so I basically said to her "news to me". She asked me some questions about what I thought about it and didnt have much to offer obviously, then she asked me if I felt less safe. I responded that since I had no clue I had no reason to feel any less safe. Then she said "well now that you do know, do you feel less safe?" I responded that I feel exactly the same as I did before I knew, nothing changed in my life so I really have no reason to be fearful, in fact if there is anything I should be worried about it would be every time I commute to and from work because statistically I am at far more risk being harmed in a car accident than from any bank robber. Our interview ended, but it was quite amazing how she tried to prod me towards the sensationalistic fear response that she wanted from the interview.

If she asked almost anyone else they probably would have said "OMG bank robbers everywhere, I might get shot tomarrow so I better not leave my house"

Better get a security system too!

    And locks for your windows!

Don't forget to get a mean looking dog and train him to be viscious and be surprised when he mauls your child.

Oh and don't forget to demand more police and CCTV.

Don't forget to bring a taser with you at all times.

Also get a car alarm that pisses off all the neighbours!

You have made it clear that you are incapable of doing both.

Enjoy being two standard deviations below the average IQ.

Rich people worked hard for where they are and that hard serious work has paid off and now they can have fun when they take vacations or buy the things they want.
