If anyone is still wondering why these threads get made, here's the reason:

General Electric (GE) has many contracts with the government, and constantly tries to expand their monopoly privilege by any means necessary, which includes lobbying congress. Coincidentally, GE has also been pushing 'green technology' with government subsidies in mind (since these technologies are only ever "profitable" when their cost is subsidized). A large part of its current lobbying efforts concentrates on promoting high-speed rail transport in America, and to this end GE has been actively distributing propaganda among certain leftist communities on the internet (such as 4chan).

If you need an explanation for the absence of high-speed rail in America, the reason is because it, like green technology, is unprofitable. Say fuck to crony capitalism.

NORMALLY, I would approve of socialising an industry full of douchebags, but I know that the gov. will run it right into the ground (historically speaking governments around the world have a tendency to fuck airlines up fairly quickly) and I don't want the US to lose those jobs.

Are you a natural born U.S. Citizen? You should try to apply to position for companies like Lockheed, Raytheon, Department of Defense, or Northrop Grumman. They are always looking for engineers and since you normally need a TS/SCI, those Indian and Chinese engineers on H1b's can't get in. There application process is extremely slow though, takes 3 months just to hear from them and even longer to get your DoD security clearance.

    >while costing more

Depends on the asshole that's running it. The ticket is probably going to be much cheaper than renting a car, it's also going to be cheaper than driving my own (assuming I had one) when you factor in maintenance that will have to be done after long distance (out of state) wear and tear and gas, pit stops, snacks and the like.

I think you're being unfair, high speed (or in this case medium speed) rail can help a lot of people, just give it a shot, if it works and is fine and makes people happy, then great, if it's shitty I'll be the first to start cussing it out and damning the whole concept to hell.

Well, actually, I'll do that anyways, I fucking hate trains.

but the vast majority of americans own cars, so it is stupid to compare it to renting, a ticket would cost more than the gas it would take to drive the distance much of the time

    Technically speaking, yes.

As for the rest of that, everyone in my class has been applting everywhere since last semester, and a few of the places I applied to did in fact show interest in hiring me BUT, since I have no experience it's mostly low paying positions. Boeing on the other hand is offering me 1 year in BIH with a mid level position after that at BCA with the possibility to enter BDS within 6 years(counting the one in BIH).

however there is this one australian aspie whos been going around on this cover-the-continent-very-town-(literally)-with-trains rampage for months, so its basically become reflex to trash trains, no matter what

Nah regulations have nothing to do with it. That is the bullshit that faux news tells you. Its because we allowed ourselves to become a debt based economy, where the average person can take outrageous loans and mortgages without any hope of paying them back.

America democratically said they didn't want to work physical labor jobs. That pretty much leaves the engineering and software development sector that actually produces stuff, any most people aren't cut out to work in that industry.

If I was president I'd make loans illegal. If you can't afford it you don't get it. You would see a lot of stuff change quickly and it would be for the better. First off living beyond your means creates artificial demand so eliminating debt will lower prices. Also it would get people back to work since being able to leave beyond your means creates incentive to be unproductive.

There is my solution and I believe it is really as easy as that.

The US doesn't really have a strong train riding culture, you can't just up and expect everyone to start using this thing it's too unconventional and removed from peoples minds, you have to build it up through word of mouth and seek public approval in dense areas first.....going all out is just asinine.

VERY MUCH AGREE, governments do not do a good job at running businesses, services, sure, I like cops and I like fire departments, but this is a damn business, it's not a little subway that goes from street a to street b, it's a cross country, massively expensive, high maintenance and tech heavy tool, it needs to make money.

You guys just don't get it. Yes, personal transportation works for you now because the cost of cars and fuel is artificially low. Your government is getting desperate for a way out of the financial black hole that you've created and fuel duty is just begging to be the answer to that.
Pretty soon your government will have to increase fuel duty which means that not only running but making cars is going to get a lot more expensive. The same applies to air travel. It doesn't apply, to the same extent, to rail travel, all of which means the way you travel now IS going to change. Whichever redneck Republican or yoghurt-eating liberal you elect, this IS going to happen.
When railways were invented, people thought they would only be useful for shifting coal from the colliery to the port. When cars were invented, people thought they would only ever be an enjoyable but ultimately useless toy for the extremely wealthy.
You can't see any need for your long-distance trains because you haven't got the imagination to realise that, 20 years from now, at least some of the network shown won't just be useful, it'll be essential for both passengers and freight. You should be grateful that you've got a government that realises this and is acting on it.
