    >The International Herald Tribune reported, "The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has announced that it is considering charging for access to online lectures and class notes, which are currently available free on the Web." Speaking at a time when the university's "endowment has shrunk to $7.6 billion," down from $10.1 billion two years earlier, a university official said that the current setup "may not be the best economic model, so we are now looking seriously at new e-learning opportunities." The Herald Tribune noted, "According to University World News, an online newsletter, putting courses behind a paywall is one of a number of measures designed to deliver $150 million in cuts over the 2009-12 period."

Well fuck. So much for "open" learning. I was planning on picking up a programming language or learning basics of heat transfer with their resources. Go USA, education for the rich only.

Ever notice how we NEVER find this stuff out until after they start making changes? Even the online refresher courses I took at a community college required a private log-in.

    Fixed.

Seriously, this is a sign of a permanently changing economy. But I think there is another alternative than putting Open Course Ware behind a paywall: Cut the university executive salaries.

Are you fucking kidding me? That's stingy as fuck. Are you still allowed to sit in on college courses even though you're not enrolled? I did that shit all the time for quauntum mechanics and astronomy. I was so involved in the classes and the teachers liked me so much they let me look through their telescope lol.
