24 KB Obama calls for longer school year Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)13:03 No.2393536
President Obama said on the "Today" show Monday morning that American students attend school a month less than kids in other countries -- contending that the school-year gap puts them at a competitive disadvantage in the global economy. "The idea of a longer school year, I think, makes sense," he said, when asked if kids should go to school year-round.

The president also said that though per-student spending has gone up in the country, student performance has gone down, which shows that "money without reform will not fix the problem." He urged teachers unions not to resist his administration's reforms, which include evaluation of teachers based on their students' test performance and an emphasis on independent charter schools.

Obama has pushed for a longer school year before.

"We can no longer afford an academic calendar designed when America was a nation of farmers who needed their children at home plowing the land at the end of each day," Obama said last year. "That calendar may have once made sense, but today, it puts us at a competitive disadvantage. Our children spend over a month less in school than children in South Korea. That is no way to prepare them for a 21st-century economy."

    >maybe Americans won't look like the dumbest people in the world anymore..

Only stupid people would think a majority of Americans are dumb when compared to the rest of the world. We're the most powerful nation in human history, we didn't get that way by being stupid.

The problem with our test scores, I believe, is we don't push the good students hard enough and we let the shitty ones slide too far down. Our middle tier students are doing just fine but the smartest are kept down by teachers incapable of handling them so our scores should be higher if we brought them up right (like they do in other countries). Instead the smartest are victim to the dumbest.

Its not like he said anything about riasing standars or firing the incompetents and con artists. As a liberal he can do no good, nor speak without a lie in his every breath, as his skin is as black as the evil blood coursing through his satanic veins. He just wants more time for his henchmen in education to reprogram the youth and justify more money spent, Kenyan demon summoned by Muslim incantations that he is.

Think of what we once achieved with just nine months. Many great Americans had no diploma at all.

The horrible things nigers have done to this country's cities, and thus to whatwas once regarded as the benchmark of civilization, and the rural citizens must continue to pay for and suffer this mess all because idiots released these baboons into the streets hoping they'd fend for themselves like humans, just because a few could read. God help us if other animal rights nuts ever find a dog that can count; we'll be over-run by canines too.

actually my kids are pretty social creatures, and we spent loads of time together. I would help them with their studies, and we would discuss their opinions on a vast range of topics. They would get home from class, and finish their HW within a few hours, affording them plenty of time to play outside - which I was more than happy to oblige by buying them bikes, skates, taking them rock climbing, camping, etc.

Whats even better I introduced them to marijuana, and a saw how that also opened their minds.

If your kids are not smart, you have no one to blame but yourself. I took the time out of my day instead of bitching about the noise while i'm watching football....and got to know my kids, and the time I spent with them is what turned them into mature adults who value education, as well as the social aspects of life.

it's not like a shoved a joint in their mouths at 7 or something.

They watched me smoke while growing up, and were always curious. When they were old enough to understand what I was telling them, they started asking questions about it.

They didn't smoke until high school, when my son asked his junior year if he could try. Every now and then he would join me for my nightly smoke session, and we would sit outside and discuss things. I was pretty amazed at how it really opened his eyes to so much I was not aware of till much later in my life.

Thankfully, me smoking with him deterred him from smoking with unsavory people, and quenched his rebellious curiosity to want to smoke - he never became a big "pot head".

We still do occasionally smoke a joint when he comes to visit. It really is quite fascinating how it all worked out.

You do realize that the "Race to the Top" initiative he put into effect, which had states competing for federal education funding by reforming and revamping their school systems, basically told states to tell teachers' unions to fuck off, right? That's why teachers' unions have been so against it, because Obama is actually trying to make teaching a competitive profession, and teachers unions can't stand that.

this is not a good idea. just improve the education, dont add another month to horrible teaching. dont have black kids enter enrichment programs just because you think that them being surrounded by smart white and asian kids will help them, you will only drag the smart kids down.

a longer school year isnt the right way.

Would drop out be synonymous with not graduating?

Because Newark, NJ, the school which FaceBook Jew donated $100 million to, has 50% graduation rate or something like that

You know what's funny, if you exclude blacks and Hispanics from the 25% figure, the dropout rate is near 5%.

    Hope and change! Thanks libtards

just quit teaching our daughters to be whores and it will be just minorities who dont matter who wont graduate.

I agree. I don't think we really need a longer school year, we just need a real overhaul of the teaching system and academic standards.

Right now teaching is the most fucked up profession in America. It tends to be where the lazy failures go when they either can't cut it in their original field or they just never really had any ambition. Then on top of that, they're all protected by teachers unions, so they can't be fired for being shitty at their jobs.

I like what Obama's been doing with Race to the Top though. His big message on education seems to be that we need to make teaching a competitive profession again. Raise teacher salaries somewhat significantly so that people will actually WANT to be teachers, then tell unions to go fuck themselves, and boom - competitive teaching field.

Unlike American hurrdurr religion, Finnish Lutheranism teaches that the best way to discover god is through studying the physical world and he will not send you to hell unless you leave the faith.

To be honest, this is even better than atheism.

The nine month school year is an anachronism from our old agrarian days when kids were let off during the summer to help with the farm.

I'm all for year round school.

I actually agree with this. We do need longer school years. Hell when I was in grade school, after summer I forgot just about everything. And it's not like I was actually doing anything productive over the summer.

The problem is we don't have the money for it. I went to a great public school however we always ran out of money for even paper towards the end of each year.

    We just need segregation back

After we're segregated, segregate again, the troublemakers and kids who actually want to learn

Possibly put all the people that want to learn into one school

    >Obama thinks time spent in school has anything to do with it

I agree, but at the same time disagree. The problem is that the quality of education in this country is terrible, mostly because of terrible teachers not being fired, people being taught to memorize (for standardized tests) rather than to actually learn, and teachers using their positions to preach political positions (both the left and the right are guilty of this). If we were to go back to a system where you could actually fire shitty teachers, put less of an emphasis on standardized testing, and fire anybody that preaches political positions, I can guarantee that the quality of education would go up.

But that is not the only problem, kids these days do not care about learning. Kids take pride in ignorance now-a-days, and would rather sit on their computer/TV/video game console than crack open a book and read, or learn what is being taught. In part I blame the media for this (such as MTV, etc.) where they show school as a terrible terrible place, and people who enjoy learning are shown as undesirable elements(aka nerds/geeks). This embeds the image that learning in school is a bad thing, and that you should treat school as a place of social gathering rather than a learning institution (why do you think people care more about partying in college than learning?).

TL;DR Schools are fucked because the teachers are shit, and the students could not care less about acquiring any sort of education to begin with.

Schools tend to under budget, and over spend... usual problem world over.

Putting people in charge of their budgets that has a brain, would help.

The school year should be longer. At least through high school. College could stay the same since they have summer programs anyways and kids need to make a little money during the summer for books or whatever during the school year.

Then kids could think of college as something to look forward to more than they already do.

Teachers Unions ---> NEA and AFT are major stumbling blocks to quality education. Not only do their salaries and benefits eat up at least 60% to 70% of a schools budget but they protect the worst of the teachers.
