  • Since I've been on a Q&A kick in /a/ and /r9k/ recently, I've decided to set up a formspring account for publicly answering 4chan related questions. You'll find it linked in the navbar as "?", and located here: formspring.me/4chan. Also, if you use Twitter, please follow @4chan. As always, I can be contacted via e-mail at moot@4chan.org (Despite the common misconception, I check it frequently and read every message I receive. Nobody seems to e-mail me about anything other than being banned though ;_;)
EDIT: Site went down due to a hardware issue. Should be fixed now.

47 KB Vast Antarctic iceberg 'threatens marine life' Anonymous 02/26/10(Fri)09:16 No.227818
A vast iceberg that broke off eastern Antarctic earlier this month could disrupt marine life in the region, scientists have warned.

They say the iceberg, which is 78km long and up to 39km wide, could have consequences for the area's colonies of emperor penguins.

The emblematic birds may be forced to travel further afield to find food.

Dr Neal Young, a glaciologist at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Research Centre in Tasmania, explains the significance, with footage of glacier before the iceberg split.

the reasons icebergs are breaking off is because the antarctic is making too much ice

You know that big ball of plasma about 4 light minutes away from the Earth? That sends energy to this planet. Said energy penetrates the protective ozone layer surrounding the planet. Normally once this energy reaches the surface of the planet, some of it is absorbed and the rest is reflected back toward space. However, some of this energy becomes trapped by what are known as "greenhouse gases." These include Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide as well as Water Vapor. When the energy is trapped by these gases, it diffuses in to the atmosphere, increasing the energy level of the atmosphere. This expresses itself in a number of ways, most notably temperature change. When the density of the "Greenhouse gases" increases, more of this energy is trapped and this results in a change in the whether patterns globally.

In this particular case, the temperature has risen to the point that the large sheets of ice surrounding the land mass of Antarctica are breaking off much more frequently and in larger quantities than previously observed. This ice loss is not being replaced with the normal winter season progression of the ice shelves which is resulting in a net loss of ice from Antarctica.
