24 KB Why gold is a shit investment Anonymous 09/07/10(Tue)18:46 No.2223455
Good evening /new/ before I say anything I work/run a jewelry business and buying precious metals is obviously something I do on a regular basis.
Now gold is only worth as much a people perceive it to be, but I want to explain why.

Unlike metals like platinum, lithium and copper which are used in many different products and thus consumed, Gold however is not. The exception however is jewelry and limited uses in electronics where it is consumed.

When gold is mined it is refined, shipped somewhere else and nearly all of it is put back into the ground (aka a Vault).
Since the beginning of human civilization 90% gold that has been mined is STILL there, as in it hasn't been used for anything and its worth is only held by perception of others.

we CAN use it for conductors, but everyone pretends its valuable, its just another useful metal stop worshiping it.

It's good for contacts because it virtually corrosion proof. But other then that, nothing else.

Um, I'm an artist and designer. Gold is in a retarded amount of things/products all around you. And it isn't just for decorative products or jewelry, it's in paint, fabric, vitamins, pottery/ceramics, books, electronics, cars, etc. etc.

It's a very valuable metal. It is non-corrosive, conductive, stable, simple, flexible, and of course beautiful.

    > gold isn't consumed in the production of products.
    MFW

No it's not. It is an incredibly small percentage of gold that is used jewelry, Electronics, snake oil products, the vast Majority of gold is kept in reserves like, Fort Knox and Federal Reserve Building in NYC.

As as conductor for contacts it's perfect because as you just said it's corrosion proof and is a good conductor.
However the metal itself is very weak and soft and cannot be used in any practical applications (wire, switches Jewelry) unless it's alloyed with other metals.

OP, you idiot. Shhhhhh.... don't tell them about the good stuff.

Gold is NOT a commodity. It's a currency. Currencies are not consumed. They are used as means of exchange.
    OP is an idiot

    Is palladium a good investment?
    >> Anonymous 09/07/10(Tue)21:49 No.2225073
It's a shit investment because it doesn't gain in real value.

In every recession it follows the exact same pattern: At first there's a spike in the value caused by fears of inflation. A few people get really rich speculating off futures and cash out before the bubble breaks. Then it crashes, a ton of people get soaked (see 1982), and the price goes in the toilet for several years. Gradually it comes back to a historically stable level, then there's another recession and the process starts all over again.

Yes because it's a very important metal, same with platinum which is used catalytic converters.
    >> Anonymous 09/07/10(Tue)21:52 No.2225099
Investment is always based on what people perceive as valuable. If you want a quicker return than gold, invest in local (to you) farmland that is efficiently irrigated. That is going to rise in value tremendously soon.

What...? America has been off the gold standard for decades.

What other country bases its currency on gold?
    >> Anonymous 09/07/10(Tue)21:54 No.2225115

It's not a currency. Nobody uses gold as a means of facilitating transactions anymore.
    >> Anonymous 09/07/10(Tue)21:56 No.2225129
OP pretty much hit it on the spot, however that wont stop people like Glen Beck selling gold to people who think that in Economic social collapse/Apocalypse gold with have any worth.

Only if you live in India or China. Overpopulation (the main cause of increased food demand) isn't really an issue in North America or Europe.
