There was actually a very interesting study by some Sociology PhD hopefuls from Harvard that was posted on The Chronicle of Higher Education that said that it's not that professors tend to be liberal, it's that liberals tend to be more attracted to the professorial profession. Just like people with conservative leanings tend to be attracted to the police force more than liberals, etc.

I have had several varieties of teachers.

My PolSci professor was a conservative.

My English professor was an environmentalist liberal

My economics teacher was a supporter of social capitalism (slightly socialized capitalism but mostly free)

All of which have accepted, taken into account, and nurtured opposing viewpoints. I don't know where you're going to college but if your professors are willing to mark you down for holding opposing views they clearly are not intellectually mature enough to handle the job.
