federal and state expenditures have developed into a precariously balanced facade of a working system. I doubt any one program in this pie chart could be completely cut without causing more problems than the money saved could afford to fix. This leaves us with the conclusion that the only choices left are novel and significant sources of revenue or extensive modification of these programs.

I'd eliminate everything but defense, but even that would be taking some major cuts.

And by major cuts, I mean we'd be selling Afghanistan and Iraq to Iran and closing all the overseas bases that aren't in Japan.

Also the Air Force would be rolled back into the Army.

Slowly phase out Social Security. If you cut it out now with all the boomers still alive good luck trying to have any senior citizen vote for you or your party ever again. Scale back military presence in foreign countries, implement flat tax rate for all income brackets, and over time increase budget for things that matter like the Department of Education, Dept of Transportation, etc

Though I dont hate the idea of a privatized education system, it worries me that it would eventually create a system where only the relatively wealthy could afford to send their children to school.

Why would that happen? If there's a market for cheap education, someone would take advantage of that. And they'd probably do a better job than the current government.

It would divide children into school by their parent's wealth, but that's reality. It's not like it doesn't happen in college/university anyways.

To give the discussion some focus, I have blacked out an area equal to the budget deficit.

When Social Security was created, "retirement" age was roughly the same as life expectancy. I recommend we raise the current retirement age to the same... say 75. Medicare and Medicaid will also have a cutoff making everyone over 50 (who ought to have made enough money to support their own expensive healthcare, or take credit their own lousy lifestyle and their own failing health) ineligible... saving 90% of the costs. Then drop the R&D portion of the DOD. We're so far ahead of the curve the rest of the world will take decades to catch up, and we're still largely researching conventional weapons in the age of asymmetric warfare. Fuck it.

    Problem solved.

    >>204165
I just think that a completely privatized education system will be detrimental to the country in the long run and eventually leave an even larger gap between rich and poor.

If the feds were to phase out Social Security and Medicare and fill the budget hole they can focus on improving our shitty education system and the need for a completely privatized edu system would be unnecessary. Let the rich send their kids to private/charter schools but for most of America, a decent public education system is all that there is.

OP..how about we get more specific...

Could we do without the Panama Canal Commission? We gave the canal back to Panama in 1999.

How about Amtrak? is the goverment the only entity capable of operating a railroad at a loss?

Which brings me to the Railroad Retirement Board, a facinating federal activity.

Not to be out done by the Postal Rate Commission. They decide if stamps should go up by one cent or two cents.

The National Credit Union Administration, we all know the havoc credit unions have wrecked upon the nation

We all know, that once a Federal program is in place, we cannot end it, or, or , um we might save money if a program actually worked and we didn't need it in perpetuity

I have hated Obama since the primaries, when I heard him say that he was willing to kill a slew of civilians if it was necessary take out bin Laden, but I thought there was at least a slight prospect that he would reign in war spending just a bit just to please the idiots that thought that he was any more committed to peace than Bush. I was, of course, wrong. I didn't think it was possible, but Obama appears to be more murderous and spendthrift than his predecessor.

I'd make social security and medicare more like actual insurance. You pay into it and if you end up in a shitty place at the end of your life you get it. If you end up well of then you probably wont notice the little bit of money it would be providing you.
I'd then start charging countries like saudi arabia for the presence of our military forces. If our presence is stabilizing their dictatorship then they should be paying for it. Pull out of our wars or let their corrupt governments start paying us to kill their enemies.

I would cut two portions of the pie:

    1. Global War on Terror: We are merely wasting money on an endless war. Cut it out completely.
    2. US Department of Defense: Cut the defense budget to 75% and use that funding for much needed educational and social spending.
