    I care fuck off.

    Dear journalist faggot,

I'm going to do an undergrad in journalism starting October.

Do you regret studying it, or are you glad you studied it?

    Are there many career paths?

What are the qualifications for jobs in media/that require a journalism course in non-english speaking countries?

Do you speak fluent wapanese, dawg?

Have you done any pieces you can link us too?

That is one book written by one man, who frankly, was a shitty, angry journalist. We discussed this when I was in school and every teacher agreed the guy is a wanker
    >> Anonymous 01/26/10(Tue)12:33 No.18893
    >>18814

    most journos are wankers hth

it doesn't stop the fact that 60% of all stories being wire copy/press releases with only about 10% are original stories and only 10% of stories showed evidence of the main statement being confirmed should probably put you off journalism hth

oh plus journalism is dying out and will be a worthless career choice very soon
    >> Anonymous 01/26/10(Tue)12:34 No.18903

I sort of regretted it since, admittedly, the career options are slim. This is both a result of the current economy, and the fact that the very definition of journalism is changing, especially with the internet. The reason I like what I do, however, is that I'm in broadcast journalism. I studied print in university but before that, I took film in college. Now I'm part of the new style of "video" or "backpack" journalism, where it's usually just you asking the questions, filming & editing, and compiling the story.

That said, print journalism is sadly on its way out. Or at least it's becoming something that's harder to get into. If you don't have a specific idea of a career, I'd suggest you seriously start asking if you want to continue through with it.

As for qualifications in other countries, it's hard. For example, if you wanted to become a correspondent based in Vietnam, you would need a very extensive knowledge of the country and surrounding region. Nobody will hire you if you haven't lived there, or studied say the history or politics of the place. You also need to speak the language fluently (I'm mediocre with Japanese, I'm more behind the camera these days).

Basically it comes down to this. DON'T get into journalism if you care about money. You'll start out making pennies and it will take you literally years and years to make a decent salary (80k+ a year). If, however, you have a passion for writing, film or whatnot, it's a great career.

That book only applies to UK journalism, it's a VERY different system over there.

good points. I did the same thing, film making followed by uni again for journalism.

    >Im thinking docos/short form features

This is exactly where I plan on taking myself. I really don't give a shit about making as much money as possible...I'm doing what I love. I can tell a story with a camera just as much as I can with text.

Next year me and a friend are travelling to Canada to film a documentary about social issues in Native communities. Can't fucking wait, as I get to use a sweet Steadicam system.

How much are we talking for a total camera setup? For BBC freelance, for eg.?

They expect sound, lighting setups in addition?

Reason i ask is i sent in an application at an oz station, with SD short news pieces, and i wondered what they were ultimately expecting, especially from a grad.

im not the poster but will agree with him. in 2010, journalism is an extremely competitive career. nevermind competition for schools, once you graduate, you and 30 more students are going to be fighting for work. if you're lazy or don't want to earn your job it's not something to study. if you like writing and telling a story, then it's great. if you like the competition, and trying to be your best..the best...then it's great.

like OP im studying video journalism. this is one form of journalism that won't "die", but it will be very competitive in the coming future.

for one, news agencies, be them a newspaper or wire service, are some of the hardest hit sectors in todays economy. what used to be a very wealthy industry is now quite poor. a lot of companies are having to lay off or fire everything from writers and editors to camera operators to the office janitors. to save money, a lot of them are hiring "video journalists"

with the advent of small, high quality video cameras for cheap prices, this brought on a whole new form of journalism. instead of writers, photographers, expensive tv crews, agencies could now hire individual people to gather news. they're usually simple journalists, knowledgeable enough to operate a small camera & laptop, know how to edit and write stories and send them off for broadcast. people like this are much cheaper and easier to use than traditional methods and they can be sent anywhere in the world. a very recent example of video journalism is the iraq and afghanistan wars. there are hundreds of them in these countries gathering news and video directly from the war, editing it, and sending it back for broadcast.

Well, the whole point in video journalism is to rid the need of lots of equipment. Myself, usually travel with a Sony Z7U or V1U HDV camera. They both shoot full HD 1080i/p or SD picture on either DV/HDV tapes, or onto hard drive units. I have camera mountable lights and a couple microphones and batteries. I also have a tape deck as to not wear the camera tape heads down. Apart from that it's just a laptop/external drive and mini tripod. Some journalists will have a crew though, or more equipment.

For the film I'm doing in Canada I will have some more stuff, like a tripod/dolly and a jib arm.

ok cool, so thats 3 to 5 grand before you get to edit.
I suppose a second hand Canon might do for the time being.
Just got a lenovo t400, 300Gb hd plus external 500Gb, so i think that will do.

I guess im interested in what they told you was wrong, in reference to both production and content. What did you have to learn on the job.
