i have such an idea about what they should do about this sort of thing. p2p networks are a medium for transferring info and data. it's not the site but the torrenters. tho i have to admit that's how i got the lady gaga song I'm listening to right now. but if i like a song i'll erase it and buy via itunes.
what they need is a grace period with music. if you like the song support the artist. not only that but sample songs for free such as this: ^^ballyhoo.bandcamp.com^^
they give there music free in good formats including flac.that got me to buy their albums.
also if the lesser known bands were to use this to get their name out, take the best songs from several bands in 1 torrent.

    Rationalization time!

piracy, in the form of the use of torrents to obtain COPIES of films, albums, tv shows etc, will never be stopped as long as smart people are using the internet

I recently downloaded Maps and Atlases's new CD because I love that band, I know that the average band only gets between 1 and 2 percent of the proceeds from album sales. I am gonna go see them in concert in august, so I feel righteous in that I am throwing some of my money to this band. I also know for a fact that the guys in M&A don't give a fuck about people downloading their shit, because they are just happy people like it, and they prolly download shit too.

PROTIP: Avatar made billions of dollars

James Cameron probably doesn't give a fuck if people download his movies. The distributor, however, probably will care.

In the end, this isn't about theft, because nothing is being taken out of the possession of anyone else. If i took a photo of a painting and kept it for myself, it could not be said that I stole the painting.

Yeah, but you aren't given the right to make the copies that you want.

You're violating the copyright monopoly that's been guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.

Just because you can do something easily, doesn't mean it's right.

I can sneak into a concert. Sure, the concert would play anyway whether or not I was there, but the concert throwers have a right to control who views their show.

Let's say a company sells you a car, but forbids you to drive on any road that they didn't approve off (they approve of barley any road).
Now say every single car manufacture follows this practice, suing people for millions of dollars if they are caught on the wrong roads.
Think of this again. You bought a car, with your money, which you earned with hard work, and even though you legally own that car, the company who made it can still dictate what you can do with said car.
This is the essence of copyright.

Intellectual property is a very front loaded production. Once it's made, it's freely and easily distributed. If no money is being exchanged on the distribution, I morally have no problem with it.

    >Piracy is the biggest sense of entitlement of the digital age.

I love how people now use "entitlement" as if it was some sort of slur. We are fucking entitled to it. We pay anywhere from 40 to 150+ dollars a month for an internet service that was almost entirely funded by subsidies from the government. That come directly from our taxes. We pay for online content at least 2 times over even if we are "stealing it".

It costs isps less than a fraction of a cent per gigabyte transferred (doesn't matter if it's email or vidya, data is data) and these companies feel "entitled" to charge us over 1,000% markups.

    Fuck those guys. Seriously.

i agree with what you said. if a band gave away it's music , and 95% of the profit that's left (after crew and stage people) they would make a decent amount . get rid of the record companies, use free-lance production guys no contracts and just pay for the song being recorded and edited, the last 5 % would be to keep the train rolling.
but that is implying that there are morally superior people who would pass-up on the extra profit left over.
(which happens to also be the fail in communistic democracy)
