Because businesses will either cut production, or cut employees. Regardless, the consumer loses and prices ultimately go up. Essentially nullifying any effect the raise had to begin with.

Then again, it's better that people are making something rather than the .34 cents and hour that the EVUL COPURASHUNS would shell out, right?

Small businesses will have even lower, or zero, profit margin.

More employers will seek to employ people who don't have to be paid minimum wage such as illegal immigrants instead of legal citizens.

well. it will have some effects. Theory says less people will be able to work. (cause some people ain't worth the minimum wage. I looking at you teenagers and mentally challenged) Also Theory suggests and evidence bears out that prices will rise on products that involve the production that low wage works are involved in.(making their goods more expensive & not better thus less competitive in the market place)
    >> Anonymous 06/27/10(Sun)12:13 No.1490097
Why is there even a federal minimum wage in the first place? The cost of living differs from state to state so the states should be the ones deciding minimum wage.

Cause it is needed to set a standard for wages. People are dumb and lack a lot of information. Minimum wage gives a piece of information to everyone out their. Think about it. how many of you know exactly or even closely what your friends parents of neighbors earn? Workers need some bargaining chip and employers need some of idea of what they can expect to pay.
    >> Anonymous 06/27/10(Sun)12:15 No.1490125
Part time workers will get less hours, a few small business will go under, the cost of a burger will likely go up a nickel and many labor unions with employees that already get living wages will get a raise because their contracts are indexed to the minimum wage in.

Basically, if you want to make life better for the trucker making 45K a year (or the K-12 teacher making 30K), increasing the minimum wage is a good policy. If you want to make life better for poor people you need to increase funding for healthcare, education, housing and transportation.

Some form of minimum wage is a good idea given the low elasticity of demand for low-paying jobs. However, the attempts by the Obama administration to increase it further is just ridiculous and will harm businesses in this harsh economic environment. The minimum wage (for now) should be around 5-6 dollars. No more.

Raising the minimum wage isn't that helpful since the cost of living is already very low throughout much of the US.

The real way to help to make things easier on people, is to drive up the cost of labor so that people that want to work will find they can make a living doing so. In other words, remove the source of the depression of wages.

Last I read, only about 10,000 people are made citizens every year, green cards being somewhere around 100,000 (can hardly remember).

If there was a limit put on illegal immigration it would drive up the value of labor which would make things much easier on most everyone.

Illegal immigrants just swarm cities in every country providing more labor for cheaper prices, which makes things harder on those already in the country that would have done that work had they been able to make a living doing it.

Raising the minimum wage is of no significance as long as people can simply bypass it by hiring illegal labor which allows for you to pay whatever you feel like.

The only solution is broad sweeping reform. It takes time, but it would end up being worth it and it really is the only way. Also, it would have to come through the people demanding it, which I almost have no hope of. Mostly due to people caring more about what happened on Two and a Half Men and waiting for the next Twilight movie instead of what rights they are losing this week. I honestly do hate America...

The only places where people actually believe this:

    America

    >Because businesses will either cut production, or cut employees.

Usually everyone just raises their prices so the net effect of that minimum wage increase is null.

Holy fucking shit. That equates to $1200 per month with a standard (atleast here) job with 5 days of 8 hours each per week.
Where I live, we get $173 per month in the same conditions.

Business owner here. I mostly sub-contract to my employees, or I pay then via "general labour" (Cash in hand). Raise the minimum wage all you want, I dont care. I mostly escape having to worry about such things due to the nature of how I pay people, and I start inexperienced people out at $15/hr anyways if they dont/wont sub. People WITH experience make $20.50 to start, or more. Although experienced people generally recognize that Subbbing will make them far more money.

I have some advice for young workers who are inexperienced and perhaps live in an area where Illegal immigrants depress wages and oportunities for entry-level positions, make your citizenship work for you, more specifically, make your life of living in your country and speaking the language work for you. Get entry level sales positions. Immigrants, legal or otherwise can *not* compete with you outside of their own cutural bubbles. I know this sounds harsh but its the cold hard truth; your accent, (or rather percieved lack of accent as far as your potential domestic customers are concerned) is worth money. Cash it in.

That's a load of crock. There's hundreds of thousands of people in India who have had elocution lessons to make them sound like a John Smith and customer service jobs usually pay the least. And regarding sales, are you freakin kidding me? Sales jobs are the highest paid jobs income wise when bonuses are factored in and you have to have a knack for them you can't just start closing like a baller just because you have an accent that matches 80% of the native population LAWL.

The US should have a $10 minimum coast to coast. And get the fuck out of here with any "LET THE STATES DECIDE, I SUCK THE COCK OF THE CONSTITUTION" bullshit. At the rate we're going with states deciding shit, DC could cease to exist (as we know it anyway) in the next 50 years. We have a fucking federal government for a reason.

Everything from the minimum wage to education not being rewritten by a bunch of fundamentalist loons wouldn't be an issue if the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OMG made these decisions. I know it's an unpopular stance right now, but it's true. Do you see Canada teaching their kids that bullshit like the Republican Revolution and NRA are worthy of being tested on? No. Why? Because the federal government figures it out, not a bunch of fucking born-again hicks spewing out faux god-fearin' intellectualism on a daily basis.

Fuck this country. I want out SO BAD.
