Seriously, why not just have the National Guard deployed on our borders? The Mexican AND Canadian borders are both equally susceptible to drug smuggling and human trafficking. People forget that the Canada-US border is the longest undefended stretch of territory in the world. The Candian and US authorities don't have the manpower to patrol every entrance and exit. Tons of smuggling go under the radar.

As for the US-Mexican border, why not have volunteer militiamen have 3-6 months of training from law enforcement and the military, deputize them, and then have them patrol the border with a cop or soldier to oversee them.

You really have to wonder what's going on when American soldiers defend poppy production in Afghanistan, when the government grants large tracts of American soil to foreign outlaw smugglers and yet the drug prohibition continues. There are some in the Republican Party who give a shit, given the threat illegals pose to their party's fortunes in the long run, but oddly, their party is compromised too - by the fact that the party's funding comes from businesses many of which employ illegals.
