Because liberals are fucking stupid. They don't want nuclear power, they don't want to use our own country's oil reserves either, they don't want solar or wind power because it "spoils" the environment too. All they want is civilization to be reduced to a bunch of primitive tree-hugging hippies dying out from common diseases just so that we could be "one" with nature.

    you mean this?

In the end, the reactor was brought under control, although full details of the accident were not discovered until much later, following extensive investigations by both a presidential commission and the NRC. The Kemeny Commission Report concluded that "there will either be no case of cancer or the number of cases will be so small that it will never be possible to detect them. The same conclusion applies to the other possible health effects."[2] Several epidemiological studies in the years since the accident have supported the conclusion that radiation releases from the accident had no perceptible effect on cancer incidence in residents near the plant, though these findings have been contested by one team of researchers.[3]
Public reaction to the event was probably influenced by the release (12 days before the accident) of a movie called The China Syndrome, depicting an accident at a nuclear reactor.[4] Communications from officials during the initial phases of the accident were felt to be confusing.[5] The accident was followed by a cessation of new nuclear plant construction in the US.

    OMG MOONINITES!

People are afraid that if nuclear power plants become the norm that they'll become poorly engineered facilities that would turn their neighborhoods into uninhabitable dead zones. Power plants in general are NIMBY projects, but anything that threatens to kill anything within a 5 mile radius and scorch the earth for an even longer distance around is something people want nowhere near them.

TMI accident was caused by a failed valve that dropped reactor coolant pressure less than pressure required to preclude bubble formation in the core. Air bubble formed in the core and no one noticed. Bubble in Core looks just like a bubble in the pressurizer. Air doesn't transfer heat as well as water, reactor got really fucking hot and damage to the core occured.

My father was a nuclear engineer before the ass cancer killed him. He told me that one of the reasons that there is no long term storage for the spent fuel is that they've already invented methods of recycling the fuel and that as technology improves the spent fuel will be a good source of more energy. It's already so refined compared to raw uranium ore and still has lots of fissionable material (although not usable in the reaction that generated it. Finding a permanent disposal method for it would be like throwing away a truck load of empty aluminum cans away because you need to remove the paint before recycling.

It was constructed just fine; the operators put it into a state where there was a power transient because of the design. The designers understood this and the plant controller would have accounted for it had it not be disabled. The plant operators did not understand the physics behind the operation.

Chernobyl was the most poorly constructed piece of shit ever, even by Communist Russia standards, it was built cheap and on at the time, very old and unsafe technology.
Still it ran pretty well, until they decided to do some emergency tests with it. it was actually human error that fucked up the reactor and caused it to meltdown.

I know physics majors that are super against nuclear as well, for no goddamn reason outside of "RADIATION WILL KILL US ALL" I think they are just alarmists and have not kept up to date with current nuclear and waste technology.

Also Coal causes several times the amount of radioactive waste than nuclear.
