53 KB Colorado education law may mark a national shift Ned the Newshound !XBW.lrXjxw 05/23/10(Sun)10:02 No.1047065
    >The law ties teachers' job reviews to the performances of their students on achievement tests. Similar legislation is pending in other states; federal dollars may be at stake.

A landmark Colorado law that ties teacher evaluations to the progress of their students on achievement tests could help build momentum for a national movement that seeks to overhaul how instructors' tenure and pay is earned, education leaders say.

Colorado's law will hold teachers accountable for whether their students are learning, with 50% of a teacher's evaluation based on students' academic growth as measured partially by test scores. In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is pushing legislation that will change the way teachers are evaluated, but its prospects are less certain; the state's teachers union strongly opposes it.

Colorado's action comes amid a national debate over how to get the best teachers into the classroom and remove the ones who aren't doing a good job.

Similar legislation emphasizing teacher performance over job security is pending in Louisiana and Minnesota, and bills overhauling tenure protections and/or evaluation systems have already passed in Maryland, Connecticut, Washington, Tennessee and Michigan.

So they're basing teacher pay on how well students do on their standardized tests?

While I don't agree with tying evaluations with students test scores, I do agree with raising teachers salaries.

Good, now all we have to do is eliminate the Department of Education, No Child Left Behind, and let states take the needed steps in reforming their school system.

As a Union Teacher, I can say that most of the old dogs are deathly afraid of this kind of bill. Why? Because in a union you get pay by how long you are there, not by how good you are.

    >>1047113

yep, to see a kid's general education improvement. in this case though it says it's 50% of the evaluation, not the whole thing. those tests are how they decide who's in the "gifted" classes in public schools, not to mention AP classes, so they're obviously a big deal. it kinda makes sense to use them in regards to a teacher's worth.

i was in the gifted classes. :)
....and now i'm on 4chan. sigh....

Yeah, Unions are outdated: a product of the Industrial Revolution that was needed before basic government protections were instated.

Now they only serve as corrupt political action committee funds who wish to enrich their members and supporters with taxpayer funds.

Why did we even allow unions in the public-sector in the first place? Is there some fear that people or members of a democratically elected government won't treat their teachers well?
    >> Anonymous 05/23/10(Sun)10:23 No.1047159
In your average middle class neighborhood school, this probably will not be that much of an issue. I, however, feel badly for the teachers in inner city schools filled with hispanics/black people.

    >> Anonymous 05/23/10(Sun)10:41 No.1047265
    I oppose this law.

There is no good way to test a teacher's performance in the classroom. This will just cause teachers to teach to the test and be up the principals' asses. The principals can choose which students go into which classrooms. They can give their pets the good students and leave the bad students with anyone who speaks out.

    This will not help schools.

That's wrong. The teachers will get up the asses of parents if their student is not giving a shit (Something they should ALREADY be doing).

The teachers have no power over the parents. Asshole parents don't care what a teacher says. Most principals will not go to bat for a teacher. If the student is a little shithead, it is usually because of the parents' lack of discipline.

The only way to fix schools is for parents to raise their children with some discipline and not expect the state to do it for them.

In Mass., they've been teaching to the test for the last decade. Now they're talking of potentially scrapping the test the whole damn curriculum is built around in favor of another one. And none of the people who make these decisions are or have ever been teachers last I knew.

at some point, america will realize that all children will not and cannot learn the same. they will re-institute special schools for retarded children, and technical trade schools for those with lower IQs. when that happens, we will rival the asian and european education systems that already do these things.
