01/20/11(Thu)23:27 No.249956You know, I don't actually have a problem with that proposal, Amtrak service is a failure for much of the country.
A
couple weeks ago I had to travel from southern Colorado to southern
Minnesota and I did some looking at what different modes of transport
would cost:
Airline; $400-600 round trip (depending on airline,
and how far in advance tickets could be bought), 6 hours one way
including the drive to/from airports and waiting.
Car with fair
gas mileage: $240 round trip, 16 hour drive one way. (had to go with
this, sadly, and another five hours were added to travel time by bad
weather on the return trip)
Amtrak: $550 round trip, 1 hour to
drive to the nearest station, 19 hours to Chicago, A TWENTY-THREE HOUR
WAIT, then another 7 hours to my final destination. The way back would
only have a 1 hour layover, so average time would be 39 hours, one way. |
