they're getting ready to put in an order for new Viewliner baggage car/ crew car combos and stuff like Viewliner-style diner cars to start phasing out what's left of the heritage fleet, the amfleets aren't actually that old and won't be going anywhere for a while

Ray LaHood's a Republican, but he's on the record as being pro-Amtrak. And the Obama campaign's policy sheets have been relatively Amtrak-friendly for a while, although transportation is the sort of thing that gets shoved into the background.
