Anyone know when Amtrak will replace these ancient rolling stock? I'm sick of the tiny windows and overall shape...

When that magical negro in Washington appropriates funds to building more rolling stock for Amtrak. It'll be likely Bombardier will get the contract, and the new stock won't be any better.

they're getting ready to put in an order for new Viewliner baggage car/ crew car combos and stuff like Viewliner-style diner cars to start phasing out what's left of the heritage fleet, the amfleets aren't actually that old and won't be going anywhere for a while

I couldn't agree more about the tiny windows thing. If you've ever ridden on a Superliner, the difference is amazing.

    >House leaders called for $30 billion for highway construction and $10 billion for mass transit and rail.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/obama_stimulus

There was also discussion about the possibility of implementing the long-needed overhaul of the nation's ATC system:

    >In a recent report, the FAA said it would ask for $4.6 billion to implement the new system by 2013, adding that failure to do so could cost the U.S. economy $22 billion annually in lost economic activity.

Which is kind of funny because up to this point everyone's been wondering how the FAA was going to secure $4,600,000,000 but now that's just a drop in the bucket of the new stimulus plan...

It's going to be nice to finally see some goddamn class and modernization and national attention for our neglected transportation infrastructure.

Talgo windows are even bigger than the Superliner's.

    >>70660

Bombardier is chomping at the bit for that stimulus package. Of course who's to say whether the monies and contracts may also go to Alstom, Hitachi, Siemens, or even Talgo?

I dunno. Biden is pro-amtrak, but the transportation Sec. is a GOPper...for DoT?
    >> Anonymous 01/15/09(Thu)21:08 No.70782
well in good old Blighty the Mark 2's 3's and 4's from the 70's-80's are far superior to the more modern carriages if your over 4' 6"
so if US follows the trend then I wouldn't get your hopes up

    Oxymoronic, don't you think?

Ray LaHood's a Republican, but he's on the record as being pro-Amtrak. And the Obama campaign's policy sheets have been relatively Amtrak-friendly for a while, although transportation is the sort of thing that gets shoved into the background.

the heritage fleet has baggage cars built in the 40s, with diners & other cars built in the 50s. on a viewliner train, there's finally going to be one type of rolling stock the whole length of the train.

One of the biggest Amtrak supporters in Congress is now set to become Vice President. I'd say that's a positive sign.
